The Real Dakota Fanning Bald Head Story

I think in Random Photos the other day I made a quick mention about Abigail Breslin having to shave her head for her new role. The reason I didn't do a post is I honestly don't care about Dakota Fanning or whether she wants to shave her head for a role. Until now.

Although Dakota looks kind of funny for not taking the role considering she had no problems with the whole molestation theme in one of her films. Here is how it all went down.

The film is My Sister's Keeper which is based on a 2004 novel of the same name about a sister who sues her parents to stop them from using her as a genetic guinea pig for her sister who has leukemia.

In preparation for the role, Dakota went to a hospital with the director Nick Cassavetes to see child cancer patients. In a room filled with patients, Dakota in a very loud voice said something along the lines of, "there is no way I will ever shave my head and look like these kids." Every kid in the room heard what she said. Since that day Nick Cassavetes can almost always be seen wearing a shirt that says FDF. The DF stands for Dakota Fanning. I will let you guess what the other F stands for.

It's not as though she is a pre-schooler & doesn't understand what she is seeing/saying. That is just totally wrong & disgusting behavior froma teen.

Yet another reason for not making kids into stars...

How old is she? What she said was WRONG but it is unfair for her to always be expected to act and think like an adult.

I have 3 younger sister and they all went through that self absorbed vain as all f#%k stage.

She needs to be pulled up on what she said however she also needs to be allowed to be an adolescent too so that she can learn from her mistakes.

(well, that is my piece anyway)

my daughter is the same age and she would have known better than to say something like that since she was 6 or 7 years old.

p.s. she also knew better than to dress like that since about the same time. (but I'll not go there)

Until I read this, I could sort of understand Dakota not wanting to shave her head. When I was her age, I wouldn't have shaved my head for my art nor any amount of money. But pluease, my favorite 5 year old has more sensitivity than this twit.

I love the t-shirt ideas. But I can't give up my new "Blaaake Incarcerated" t-shirt.

What a twat. Yes, I realize that she's about twelve or so years old. But still: twat city.

the worst part is, because of her fame, and the adults who make money off of her, she will be told by her agent, manager and mom, that she is got a raw deal, and how could they do this to you, our princess. If she was a non-star kid, most parents would point how to her how cruel and inappropriate and worng her behaviour was. But this is how the monsters like Lindsay and Britney became what they are today. No body wants to be honest with these little Gold Machines

Sorry,... not a Dakota fan but this story is false. Let's not lynch her just yet. Seriously, you don't think anyone taped the visit to the hospital? Use some basic common sense.

Abigail is a much better actress.

Those Fanning kids are fugly trolls obviously inside and out.

Gosh, a little girl making an obnoxious remark. How unusual.

Jesus, she's a kid. Give her a break. The other kids probably took the comment in stride.

Visman, when I hear these kinds of stories, about a kid no less, I also wonder. It's not like we're talking about Tyra where there's history we can go on.

I think it's meant to be a joke perhaps? Have to agree w/ visman, not true. I don't require video, it just doesn't ring true even just for the fact that Nick C is a father himself. Wearing a t shirt sounds just a wee bit juvenile for him. All his interviews and work show a thoughtful, sensitive man. Now if the joke was that he exploded w/ anger at the time, that would be a trifle more believable.

Unknown said...

Very demeaning to both Fanning & Nick Cassavetes, not a funny joke if that's what the writer was aiming for. False. Wasn't this the child who's on some children's hospital pediatric charity board? I'm sure I remember seeing articles that she visited the hospital and cancer patients regularly, way before she & her sister were even announced for the roles. Doesn't make sense that she'd say that having seen patients up close before. Cassavetes said in interviews for his last film that he sits down every actor & tells them exactly what to expect prior to filming. Crappy rumor to make up about a child.

I agree, this is a lie. Also, who KNOWS what I would have said outloud when I was her age!

My Sister's Keeper is a totally rockin guilty pleaure read. Jodi Picoult needs to write them faster!

Whoever said that the other kids would have just took this in stride must not have been around children with leukemia. Having had my niece survive this I know how cruel words affect these children. I know my niece begged to get her ears pierced so people would quit calling her a boy. Then she would yell at people for laughing or making comments about her being bald.
I honestly hope that this story is indeed false as I would hate to think that at 14 she is so self centered and cruel to say that in front of these children that are fighting for their very lives.

Unknown said...

Heather said: "Doesn't make sense that she'd say that having seen patients up close before."

Bingo. Enough said. The story makes it seem as if she never met cancer patients before, when in fact she has. This article makes it seem as if she had no idea what they looked like and made it seem as if she had no idea what she was getting herself into. Why would she be shocked at their appearances, to make a kind of statement like that? She has seen what cancer patients looked like up close before in the past, on her many visits to hospitals, greeting those type of patients, so why would she make a comment like that, acting as if she had no idea what they were going to look like? Ent, this story is false and it is unbelievable that you would make something like this up to try to defame Dakota's name.

I just looked up her birthday - sorry, 14 ist just to old for that kind of comment, but so ist 13, if we give her the credit that this happened earlier this year. I'm so totally against smacking children. Beating children is BAD! Beating anyone is bad. - Having said that, what is the proper reaction to that comment?

She's going to have to kiss a lot of ass to make up for this.

She's almost 14? Yeah, somebody that age can't be held accountable for what they say. What the fuck ever. She should have known better. Say it in the limo on the way to the Ivy; DON'T say it in front of kids with cancer.

YahMoBThere said...

Are you folks kidding when you say you might have said the same thing when you were 14, or that kids who are 14 can't be held accountable for what they say? Or do you just not have kids? As good mothers, you teach your kids when they're 3,4, and 5 that they need to edit whatever they're thinking about anyone who might looks different and hold the thought until they're alone with you, so you don't hurt anyone's feelings. This would be inexcusable for a six or seven year old - otherwise someone isn't doing their job as a parent.

Not that I believe this story, but still.

Elsbit said...

I think this story is a load of crap.

Kim said...

Just disgusting. I hope it's not true, but if it's not, I don't for a moment think Enty made it up, so whoever said that can forget it.

My sons are 16 and 13, so there are lots of kids from 12-17 roaming around in their respective social circles. Some are snotty, some are sensitive, some are rebellious, some just plain don't think before they speak. Every one of them know better than to think this is appropriate to say, whether they say it or not varies, but they all *know* it's wrong.

Now, that said...someone like DF, who has been told since she was 5 or 6 that everything that comes forth from her face is special and wonderful and golden just might not have had the appropriateness filter set right by those (her parents, her agent, etc) who were making money off of the kid. So, while I think it's awful that she said it, and I think at her age she's responsible for what she says, I think she may have some deficiencies in her knowledge bas there.

YahMoBThere said...

EL doesn't need to be the one who made it up in order for it to be bullshit.

But he DOES state on the home page that some of what he writes is fiction, so don't be so quick to discount that possibility.

takeme2espana said...

I don't buy that they wouldn't have prepped her on the ride over to what she would be seeing. And IF she did say something so insensitive and deplorable. She deserves the backlash she gets for being so bloody unprofessional. At 14 she is mature enough to know about "feelings" and been in the business long enough to learn how to 'hold her thoughts'. Either this is rubbish or she has gone completely Tyra.

Chatty Cricket said...

ok. I am also having a hard time believing this story. Not that she flipped about shaving her head, but that she did so in front of a room full of young cancer patients. I've seen DF interviewed, and despite her young age, her public persona comes across as very self aware, and VERY mature (please note: I don't know whether or not her "maturity" carries over into her private self, I've just always thought she presents herself as very mature and "wise beyond her years" which in my honest opinion, comes across as incredibly annoying).

With that being said, I wouldn't be surprised to find out that after lobbying against actually having to shave her head and losing, she had a similar outburst behind closed doors.

I'm not endorsing the behavior by any stretch of the imagination, I just think the private outburst is more believable than the public outburst.

Chatty Cricket said...

But while we're talking about the movie, can we also just discuss that Cameron Diaz was slated to play the mother?! Loves me my Cam, but really?

With the change in casting for the girls, I wonder who will play the mother?

Tracee said...

I agree with Chatty. She seems very mature in interviews so I can't picture her blurting this out loud. A couple folks around? Sure.

Nonetheless, as a kid I said some messed up shit. My nieces say the most fucked up shit, but like Sista said before its up the parents to make them understand why their words might not be appropriate for the situation. And for Gawd's sake, she's 14...can really call her a cunt?

YahMoBThere said...

That's so true, twisted. Jumping on the hate bandwagon based on fiction is pretty indefensible when it's a kid. Four or fourteen, there's a line you know? Maybe the writer here is looking for some free 15 mins/PR in real Hollywood, whatever. I think this is BS & really looking @ Cassavetes' body of work, background, etc. I'm offended for him too. When did it become OK to make up lies about people in the entertainment business who live private lives? I'm not talking Lilo or Spears, etc who court the attention but private people who have careers.

REN said...

Can I throw in some perspective here? When I was this age, I suffered from an illness that caused me to be 68 lbs and lose my hair. I heard my share of comments like this from kids at my school. Not to my face, but within hearing range, and they well knew it. Along with the pools they took as to when I was gonna die. And my own cousin, when seeing me flush out my central line saying she would rather die than have to live like me. (Who is a NURSE now, haha)
Sorry to say, kids do say things like this. And these were kids that went to church, had good parents, were cheerleaders, honor roll kids, etc. and I am sure their parents all thought they were little angels and model citizens at home.
Not apologizing or saying it's okay...but stand by my opinion that it doesn't make her Public Enemy Number One or anything.

Wow, Dakota Fanning is a self entitled little bitch with no feelings for others, what a shocker.

Good for Nick, she's over saturated as it is, let her go to school and not be an actress for the rest of her childhood.

Nycer, even if it was true, which is questionable, if you're that ignorant at 14 someone has failed as a parent. Blame her upbringing at this age, not her.

WTF said...

But substitute Dakota Fanning for Paris Hilton and EVERYONE saying it's made up would be changing their tune.

I still believe it and BOTH Fannings are out of the movie. Why would Elle be gone too?

YahMoBThere said...

Uh, yeah. We've seen Paris on videotape enough times to know this would be in character for her. Not to mention - she's not 14 years old.

Eireman said...

twisted, I don't believe it's true, I think it's fiction the writer here made up looking for some free 15 mins/PR in real Hollywood. I think children should be off limits, jmho. Wtf I don't agree w/ your PH theory. Some of us do look at facts and use logic rather than just gullibly swallowing every fiction they read on the Net.

To those of you defending her because of her age....I'm sorry, just because you're young doesnt mean you have a free pass to be a brat. You know what I was doing at 14 years of age? Hell, till I was 17! I went on missionary trips every summer, and visiting children's hospitals was a frequent part of that. Despite being a selfish teenager, I still had a basic level of compassion and decency. Do you think a NICE kid would have said something like that, at all? I wouldnt have ever dared.

If the story is false, whoopity freakin' do, then all of this is a moot point.

Anonymous said...

God, this just pisses me off. DEFENDING her snottiness as being a kid, is what creates these little monsters. My parents raised me well enough that I never became so rotten as to even think something so awful, much less say it. Even at 14, I knew to reserve that for people who actually deserved it, not some cancer patients for freakin' Christs sake. In fact, its the very idea that someone could be that insensitive and rude, that makes me think maybe this story ISNT true.

And yes, 14 is not too young for someone to be called a cunt. I knew PLENTY of cunts my age back in high school. Twats, too. Straight up fucking bitches, too. I remember my sister in high school when she was a freshman, getting cornered in the locker room and teased by her classmates and tormented mercilessly because she had small breasts....oh, and 14year olds are too innocent to be called cunts, eh?

watchthe clip of her visiting a childrens hospital and tell me you still believe she said the stuff she's accused of saying.

Ayesha said...

visman: I watched that clip and she was just as sweet as could be. But I think the incident in question could have happened on another, previous occasion.

It sounds like she was doing 'research' with Cassavetes when she made the comment. There was no mention of Cassavetes in the clip. There wouldn't have been cameras on that kind of visit anyway. And is Dakota so clueless that she would make a comment like that anywhere near a camera?

I think the visit in the clip was PR damage control, AFTER the comment.

Mikael said...

No, the clip is from 2006 I think. she was also honored for her work with childrens hospitals... That is why it is ridiculous to think she would be that insensitive. She has spent considerable time in childrens hospitals and would not be surprised that some have shaved heads.

Where the hell is any pic of Nick wearing the T-shirt he apparently wears 24/7?

I also love the hospital being left unnamed. Since she is on location filming it might be easy to prove she was in a different city than the hospital.

There are several videos of her visiting hospitals throught the past few years... why all of a sudden is it inconceivable that someone might film a hospital visit with her. Especially if it was for "research" it is even more likly to be filmed. Somebody issues an off-hand remark to a small audience in the middle of BFE and within minutes it's on YouTube from 20 different cell phones.

I can't believe I'm irritated by this cause I really don't care about her but I am amazed at how this is gaining exposure and most link back here as the source.
