Today's Blind Items

This C list primarily television actress should probably be B list. Very attractive. Most of you would know who she is, and even the shows she has been on, but she is probably not a household name. She has been on one huge hit and one of a more modest nature. Our actress and her attorneys have been in discussions with a drug manufacturer trying to reach a settlement. The reason for the settlement is that she lost her job when she tried to commit suicide. Seems that an attempted suicide kinds of freaks producers out. Who knew? Anyway she and her attorneys believe it was due to a specific drug she was taking and have threatened a lawsuit. The drug company wants to keep it quiet because the story would be all over the media and at the same time our actress is trying to keep it quiet so someone will hire her and not always refer to as the actress who attempted suicide.

Ooh, Unicorn, that would explain her strange departure from "Las Vegas."

Christina Applegate?
Though she's probably a household name.

Chatty Cricket said...

What about Samaire Armstrong? She left Dirty Sexy Money to receive treatment for "personal issues" and was on the OC at one point. Dirty Sexy Money being the modest hit, the OC would be the bigger hit, and she's done primarily TV work.

Chatty Cricket said...

Also should mention Samaire was on Entourage in 2004-2005...maybe THAT would be the big hit?

jagerlilly said...

But how would she "should probably be B list"? Her acting isn't up to B status, (barely C) IMO.

jagerlilly said...

Speaking of Nikki Cox...

Unknown said...

She also did a lot of guest star appearances on tv shows and was on General Hospital for a while. Certain drugs can cause suicidal thoughts and the lawsuits are often successful. There have been lawsuits over prozac and one of the medications that Phil Hartman's wife was taking. The drug companies keep the info very quiet. Del Shannon became suicidal after taking an anti-depressant. It is not unusual. I hope things work out for her.

CB said...

I like the Armstrong guess. She won't be back on Dirty, Sexy, Money next season, either. You'd think if she completed rehab, she'd still be employable.

Little Miss Smoke and Mirrors said...

c - A lot of fans (myself included) didn't like her storyline and thought her character was annoying.

Sounds like Samaire to me. I'm guessing the med was an antidepressant.

Unknown said...

I saw Nikki Cox on Jennifer Love Hewitt's ghost show this Friday, She looks so weird with the freakishly enlarged lips! I believe she's married to Jay Mohr who's also on that crappy show. Ok,- I digress, but was she ever even C-list?

April, she had her own show back in the day that lasted for a few seasons. So, I can see how she was "once" c-list.

This doesn't sound right to me. I don't think a tv show would/could fire someone for attempting suicide. Wouldn't attempted suicide make you protected under the ADA for a mental disorder? It would seem to be begging for a lawsuit to "fire" someone for attempting suicide, so I kind of have to wonder if she was fired for other reasons instead.

jax said...

Heather Locklear...attempted suicide.

Be Adequite! said...

Gotta be Samaire.

Jasmine said...

Jax, I thought the story went her psychiatrist THOUGHT she was suicidal and called the authorities. I don't remember there being a statement that she actually attempted it.

Plus, I would consider Heather Locklear a household name.

Unknown said...

Heather Locklear would be Alist in television I think.

Courtney Cox was the first person I thought of but she was never fired, I dont think

sp said...

As much as I hate to say this, it's probably accutane. It makes your skin flawless, but some people react quite negatively to it.

Unknown said...

I was taking about Nikki Cox. I didn't put her name in the comment. Yes, she married Jay Mohr but dated Bobcat Goldthwait for a long time. sp: I have heard that about accutane. Not all of the drugs that cause bad psychological effects are anti-depressants.

mooshki said...

Okay, I know this is subjective, but would you really call Samaire very attractive? Not that Nikki Cox is looking great these days with the extreme weight loss, etc.

sp, isn't suicide already a known consequence of accutane? I wouldn't think they could sue when the makers are really clear about their warnings. I was thinking something newer - like Ambien.

Unknown said...

Oh and yes, in this context attempted suicide could make you unemployable if the studio or production company was not able to insure you for the job. Completion of rehab does help but doesn't guarantee your role. Also, a mental disorder may or may not be covered under ADA. It depends on whether or not you could successfully and safely do a job given the specifics of the disorder.

surfer said...

I'm not sure who the actress is, but the drug Paxil comes to mind. There's been a lot of controversy about it, as a number of teenage boys have committed suicide while taking it. I think the FDA even ruled that now there has to be a warning on the box.

I was given an antihistamine cream by the dermatologist, and both she and the pharmacist warned me to use it very sparingly (it was given to me for off-label use, or however you say it). Apparently the drug was originally put on the market for depression, but in the course of dispensing it, they discovered it cleared up rashes. Who knew?

woth dees said...

eliza dushku?

buffy being the big hit and tru calling being the modest one.

Unknown said...

Brynn Hartman was taking Zoloft given to her as a sample by her doctor. Even though she was trying to beat a cocaine addiction, she had never been suicidal and she had only been taking Zoloft for a few days when she killed Phil. I think her family sued the drug company and won but I might be wrong about that.

Del Shannon was taking Prozac when he committed suicide. Though he had been depressed, thing were looking up for him as he would be working with the Travelling Willburys and was eager to make a comeback.

Sorry to be all over this one but I have post graduate credits beyond a master's degree in psychology and find this interesting.

The show can opt not to pick up the contract of an actor. How do you think Grey's Anatomy got rid of I. Washington?

They can also buy an actor out of a contract, pay them even though they don't use them. DSM was a freshman show this season. It would be easy to simply not pick up the option on Samaire's contract, assuming it's her.

The new anti smoking drug from Pfizer can cause sudden inexplicable suicide if stopped without tapering off. Chantix.

Merlin D. Bear said...

Off topic, however....
Rebecca: there are multiple issues with Chantix - one, suicidal thoughts, two, strange (believe me, straaaaaange) vivid dreams, three, (and you'll have to forgive my use of this word) extreme ditziness / episodes of airheadedness / reality disconnects.
However, from everything I've seen and read it's not the sudden stop that causes the suicidal impulse.
How do I know? I was on the damn drug for about 2 months and got 2 out of the 3 of those side effects; when I informed my Dr. of 'em, he told me just stop taking it, cold turkey.
We now return to our regularly scheduled blog

What about Rena Sofer? She is very beautiful and appeared pretty regularly on hit and semi-hit shows. All of a sudden, she has disappeared from view.

Sarah Ward said...

What about Rashida Jones? She has the top spot in Random Photos today and was "written out" of The Office.

LoCo said...

Geodon is another iffy antidepressant. I hope whoever it is gets better.

Unknown said...

This is a different Rebecca from the one who posted above.

Anyway, I belive Singulair, an asthma medication, has just been found to cause suicidal thoughts. I know many, many people who have taken this drug. Can't speak for them on the suicidal thing, though. Maybe this actress simply has asthma.

LAUREN said...

I don't think it's Rashida. She left to do a pilot on Fox.

Mother Campfire said...

Has anybody noticed an alarming trend that just about EVERYTHING makes you want to off yourself? No bueno.

I almost used Chantix but then googled it and was alarmed at what I read. When there is already class action agaist such a new drug, you have to wonder. Otherwise, Paxil is the devil, in my book. I know of several people whose life was turned upside down due to the extreme withdrawal period. BTW, I have no guess. I actually thought of Rebecca R first...but he would mention ex model, wouldn't he? And I think she's pretty household.

Samaire I do not really consider standardly beautiful.

you have to admit, we could sit here all day, and list drugs that have "suicidal thoughts/tendencies" as a side effect, and NOT just psychotropics.

Rashida Jones went over to her own show. Plus Ent always puts her on top because she's one of his spys - or so we believe.

Eliza Dushku has a show in the works with Joss Whedon and a production deal of her own.

Did anyone see the Ent's Blind about Paris' cruelty to animals has broken? The one about the housekeepers finding them dead in closets. I hope PETA kicks her skanky little arse.

kellygirl said...

it's sad there are so many actresses who could
fit this category

it is FRIGHTENING that there are so many drugs that can cause this.

One More: Cingulair
they are prescribing it like crazy

Yeah, i slit my wrists
but at least I didn't have a runny nose or itchy eyes

cdar said...

remember folks, it has to be someone who is 'not' a household name, that leaves out any friends cast member. i'm with armstrong. or someone random from 6 feet under or an HBO/Showtime show that was a hit but no longer running.

Mr.Yardeeds said...

Laura Prepon? 70's show, then October Road.

Amy said...

There is no way it could be Rena Sofer or the blind would have to say she's been on a bunch of shows and a guest on a bunch more. I think she must have something on NBC b/c it seems like they want so badly to have her in a show on their network.

She ruined Just Shoot Me and they put in her that failed coupling show, now they've got her on Heroes and looking through her IMDB there is also like half a season on Ed, and then Seinfeld and Friends guest spots.

I guess she has been pretty much all over Fox and CBS too the more I looks around. Geez. She's everywhere.

Beth said...

I would guess Effexor. A friend of mine went on it for mild depression and the side effects were SO awful. She couldn't take how it made me feel and when she went off it, it was sheer Hell. Especially the first couple weeks, she was on the verge of suicide the whole time.

Anti-depressants overhall are a good thing and do help many people. But Effexor is the devil. Doctors never warn patients of how bad the side effects are and how going off it is even worse.

Here's a petition with almost 18,000 victims and their comments.

http://www.petitiononline.com/mod_perl/signed.cgi?effexor&1

No idea who it is, but if it was Effexor, that stuff will take people with only mild depression and make them completely suicidal.

RubySaysMontana said...

My guess... Shelly Long. Rumors floating about several months ago. Huge hit would be "Cheers".

Unknown said...

This is by far one of the most entertaining blogs ONLY for the brazenly false & pretentious commenters that far outshine the lunacy of the high school kid writing the blog itself. The range of 'experts' always here and ready to impart their professional wisdom and "personal" insider knowledge to the peons defies logic and the odds. dbf is in the lead now having beat the other googlers. Better luck next time LSAM & merlin.

Unknown said...

LMFAO parklady. Surely dbf gets points for claiming "post graduate credits beyond a master's degree" & googling the ADA specifics as it pertains to the Hollywood/entertainment industry? God you have to hope these people don't do this in actual social settings - party hell and possible beat down with the annoyance factor alone.

abra711 said...

Shelly Long from Cheers is the only name to come to mind.

a new guess - what about Alicia Silverstone???

She was huge and expected to be a big star... and then kinda disappeared. Also, after clueless, she was signed onto a long contract to star in and produce movies and there was only one made.

I think i've heard that she suffers from depression, too.

dixiebell said...

Samaire Armstrong is a drug addict, not depressed. She went to rehab, not for depression but drug addictio, doesn't fit.

Paxil-interesting factoid-since the FDA outlawed it for teens and children the suicide rate has increased for those populations. Sad. It's a complicated issue, but the risks of either position on the fence are great.

I thought Alicia Silverstone was a list at one time? For film?

Unknown said...

OMG I just found my new catch phrase - "I have post graduate credits beyond a master's degree". LOVE, LOVE, LOVE it because every hs dropout genius tries this at one time or another. Oxymoron anyone?

Unknown said...

crosstown & parklady I give 4.5 to SARAH:
for the distillation of numerous online pharmalot articles to one incredibly ridiculous phrase/show of non-comprehension:

Truly, I'm speechless with awe at the supreme stupidity and amazing resemblance to the Bush administration Iraq WMDs explanations.

Surely this is non NYer josie again, drinking pitchers w/ Jimmy whilst making up stories on the non crosstown bus.

dbf -- Brynn took cocaine the night of Phil's death. This is what caused the fight between Andy Dick and Jon Lovitz. The night of Phil's death Jon and friends were furious; Andy gave her cocaine knowing she had remained clean up until that point and because all knew she was dangerous when she took it. He gave it to her, she took it and a few hours later Phil is killed.

dude, like almost every medicine these days causes at least suicidal thoughts.
I was going to take Neurontin for my migraines, but turns out that people throw themselves through windows while on it. SO! yeah, not taking that.
I hate that society has become so pharmacologically obsessed. i mean (and this is no offense to anyone on here, just something i've noticed) you guys can name like 10 drugs off the cuff. Thats not a patients job, you know? lol Its nice to be informed, but now with all the commercials and the kickbacks, docs work is um, easy. it gets people to the doctor, being like "oh i felt sniffly the other day, i think i have allergies GIVE ME THE MEDICINE THE BEE ENDORSES SINGULAIR"
that and all the shit with Ambien. THAT Shits evil.

ok off my soapbox for now, i'm exhausted.

princess pea said...

Relax nothingsacred. If anything, it shows that we are all pretty well informed these days. And that's a good thing. A little knowledge goes a long way.

CarolMR said...

lauren, I think Drea DeMatteo is a great guess. I don't remember her losing a job, but I could be wrong.

boobsu said...

Beth, I take Effexor and it has helped me tremendously. I think it is pointless to label a drug as evil just because it doesn't work for some. All drugs have this problem. Some work and some don't. My sister had a very horrible experience with Chantix, but others have positive experiences. Also, you slipped when you were talking about "your friend."

PotPourri said...

Drea DeMatteo just had a baby in November 2007 with Shooter Jennings. I can't imagine it is her. I would not put Nikki Cox in the "very attractive column" as she is freakish looking. Samaire Armstrong is not that attractive either.

Anyone who attempts suicide cannot get insurance in Hollywood.

PotPourri said...

Eliza Dushku is also listed. Angie Harmon is too, but she is only semi-attractive.

Jerry said...

It's not just medicine that causes suicidal thoughts. Every time I hear the words "Perez" and "Hilton" in the same sentence, I want to kill myself.

Alice D Millionaire said...

I take Effexor and it is the best thing that ever happened to me. Drugs work differently for different people.

Julie said...

i don't equate it as being "well-informed", i see it as drug companies trying to get people to diagnose themselves.
As I've stated before, it shouldn't be the patients job to do these things.

La RoRoe said...

Isn't that Julianna Margulies with Rossum?

Me thinks it cold be her. I read in some gossip rag a few years ago that she had some issues with depression.

Impertinent Vixen said...

nothingsacred, the bee endorses Nasonex. And for some reason, he's Hispanic.

If not for Paxil, I'd "bee" in the looney bin or dead right now. Different thinks work for different people.

d said...

I agree that Effexor is the best anti-depressant ever. I went off of it because of one of the side effects, and I will say that going off of it is an *experience*. Even carefully tapering down, that first day without it I had very foreign thoughts and feelings. Not suicidal, but not happy either.

Still, if they could eliminate a side effect, I would be back on it in a flash...

princess pea said...

nothingsacred - I wasn't suggesting that patients should diagnose themselves. All I meant was that today people do research, so are often aware of the pros and cons to certain drugs. That's all. Doctors are not Gods, they are human, and I think a well-informed person would discuss the advantages and possible side effects of any medication being suggested. Just so there's no misunderstanding, I'm all for drugs (hope that came out right!)

Anonymous said...

How about Rebecca what's-her-name from Ugly Betty? She is not coming back.

mooshki said...

Alicia Silverstone has a new show.

Kristin Bell is coming back to Heroes, the question is just for how many episodes.

Did Drea DeMatteo get fired before Joey was cancelled?

the bee endorses Nasonex. And for some reason, he's Hispanic.

Maybe because he's Antonio Banderas? ;) I think he got the bee job because everyone loved his character in Shrek 2.

Rebecca Romijn would be well-known for the X-Men movies, not just tv.

One of the reasons antidepressants raise the suicide rate is because without them, many people are too depressed to attempt suicide. So in a funny way, being suicidal can be a sign of improvement.

Amy said...

nothingsacred - what happened w/ the ambien that made it evil?

One of the first times I took it I didn't realize how quick it would kick in and I got distracted talking on the phone and I guess not realizing I was fighting the sleep while I was trying to finish my conversation. That did make for some slight hallucinations...but since then I've learned to lay down as soon as I take it and I think it makes for a great nights sleep.
