Mia Farrow Is Going On A Hunger Strike

Mia Farrow is going to begin a hunger strike on Monday "as a personal expression of outrage at a world that is somehow able to stand by and watch innocent men, women and children needlessly die of starvation, thirst and disease."

Umm, we have been doing that for a long time, but apparently this time Mia wants to do something about it. She is doing it because the Sudanese government expelled all international aid agencies from the country and so Mia wants to show her solidarity with the people of Sudan.

I appreciate her activism and I haven't seen a hunger strike in a long time. They used to be the "it" thing to do back in the day. Have a cause? A hunger strike was the answer.

I really don't think this is going to do anything except possibly kill Mia. Sure, I am writing a post about it, but you already have the biggest names in Hollywood who have tried to bring attention to Darfur and have raised millions and millions of dollars and brought lots of attention and publicity to the issue. It didn't really do any good and most people, at least in this country remain fairly apathetic about the whole thing. If someone broadcast a one hour commercial free documentary about Darfur up against American Idol and Dancing With The Stars which do you think people would watch? My guess is that even if the Darfur documentary was the only thing on every channel, most people would watch a DVD.

I hope everything works out for you Mia and that you don't take it too far. I mean you do have a teenager still living at home with you.

That woman really is batshit, isn't she?

I've never understood the mentality of the hunger striker. Why would you possibly think that I give a rat's ass whether or not you eat a sammich? If you want to off yourself in a slow and (I assume) painful manner, fine - but don't assume that it will have any kind of impact on my actions. Watching you waste away isn't going to influence me to change my behavior.

That said - Mia always did seem like a bit of a whack-job.

All she's doing is hurting herself. Brilliant idea, Mia.

Why would the Sudanese government give two shits about Mia Farrow?

that one woman did it during american idol until sanjaya was voted off

Hunger strike? Next thing she'll be streaking. I agree with all above - who cares?

You people are a sad, pathetic lot.

Nope, Mia Farrow is sad & pathetic. Or just very, very outdated. If she really wants to help Sudanese refugess, a hunger strike ain't gonna do it. It'll bring attention to Mia Farrow, for sure, but not any refugees.

She could use her....errrr...star power in many more effective ways, like lobbying the US government to focus on Sudan as an important issue.

But, her goal is clearly not to help Sudan. It's to help Mia.

Mia Farrow and I don't have a lot in common but I have a tremendous amount of respect for her. She walks the walk.

I really admire Mia Farrow. Hunger strikes do seem very outdated, however she is old school and perhaps her frustration at these conditions compels her to go above and beyond celebrity fund raisers and self promoting telethons. And, given this post, she is bringing more attention to the cause. I believe her intentions are good. She really doesn't need the media attention, because she is an enigma in her own right. But, I agree with Enty.. I hope she is safe for her and her families sake. Though I admire her cause, I think of the tragic loss of Bobby Sands ( who I am in no way comparing to Mia Farrow ) and think that a hunger strike should be avoided.

to just say she's a 'whack job' or 'who cares?' kind of proves the point enty was making, along with missing the point SHE'S trying to make.

no one said they didn't care about the cause, we don't give a rat's about someone going on a hunger strike. big difference.

how delusional do you have to be to think the Sudanese gov't. are going to stop drop and listen to Mia and concave belly? hunger strikes never worked in the 60s either.

Am I missing something, or doesn't she already look hungry? That is one way to get your face in the news, though.

Mia, you adopted all of those children. You have the right idea, but it would be a far better idea of introducing a plan to feed the starving. That's how the problem is solved.

Every picture I see about Africa is that it is gorgeous and lush. Why are we still feeding them? Give them the seed and let them have at it. I read on LATimes where many Africans were pissed that they were now having to farm their own foods instead of getting crates of rice and grain dropping out of the sky. I kid you not. I have officially quit Africa.

What I don't understand is that the United States have given to other countries to help them out. So why have those countries not done anything to help themselves instead they expect other countries to bail them out.

We are in much need and who helps us.

if there was oil in those countries, we'd be all over this. come on. they're poor and black and nobody gives a shit about them because there's nothing in it for US.

as for africa being green and lush.....ever hear of the sahara desert? the kalahari? ring a bell???

Don't you know those Oxfam ads are a scam? Those children don't have Kwashiorkor, it's carb bloat. All the extra McDonald's meals they're shoving down their gullets...

The poverty of Africa has been greatly exaggerated. Obvs.

Sylvia - The difference is that USA is not a 3rd world country. You think Americans suffer more than Africans, really?
With all the political unrest, guerilla warefare, war, drought, famine, disease, lack of proper education etc, it's no wonder Africa hasn't 'sorted it out already'.
Not to mention that although Africa the country has money (and is getting money), very few citizens do.
But as nancer so rightly said, they're poor and black and have very little - if anything - of financial worth. Why should US (or other wealthy countries) care?

So, here's the thing...a hunger strike, or any other kind of STRIKE for that matter, is pretty much a pissing contest--I'm going to do this until you do that...oh, YEAH? Well, I'm not gonna do that....but in this case, Mia's just kind of pissing on herself. The Sudan has expelled all international aid--it's letting the people DIE...thousands of them. The Sudan does not give a rat's ass that one spoiled little white woman in America is starving herself.

Now, if it was Angelina--CNN would be doing live 24/7 coverage and the Sudan would have been invaded by the US within about six hours.

brava mia - for actually getting off your ass and instead of being apathetic *cough *cough you are standing up to what you believe in and showing it, however outdated some think it is. like the gorgeous pres obama says apathy was killing our nation and working together for causes and seeing hope instead of turning our backs is what we should all do to make a better planet, not just a better usa. ( i adlibbed some of that).
