Paul Giamiatti Calls Japanese Actor A Troll

Did you enjoy the movie Sideways? Sure you did. Most people did. In Japan though it wasn't as big of a hit, so some Japanese producers decided to do their own version. Instead of focusing just on wineries around Santa Barbara they decided to also include Napa and other wine regions in California. The remake was a big hit in Japan and also increased California wine sales in Japan.

The producers decided to offer Paul Giamatti a cameo in the movie, but he declined, saying, "I said no. I felt my career hasn't hit that low yet. I thought, 'What am I gonna play - the sushi chef or something?'" That is a really nice attitude to take. It is just a cameo. Actors do cameos all the time as favors and I think it would have been kind of cool to see him in it and probably would have made people watch the original Sideways again and possibly generated additional revenue for Giamatti. Maybe he could have done some commercials in Japan also and made some money. Accepting a cameo isn't going to hurt your career even in the worst movie of all time. It is a cameo, and nothing more.

Paul didn't just leave it at that though, he decided to trash the actor who played him in the remake. "They got a strange, little troll to play me." The strange troll, Giamatti is referring to is Fumiyo Kohinata. I don't know what mirror Paul uses every morning, but he isn't exactly the best looking guy to ever walk the earth. I also think that he has probably ruined any chance of any of his movies doing any kind of business in Japan. In the US we always remake Japanese movies, and I don't think I have ever heard of one of their original actors calling any of the actors in a remake a derogatory term.

Thanks LeeAnne.

Absolutely agree 100% on this one. I saw Paul on a talk show saying the same thing and could't believe what he was saying.

Is that guy above supposed to be the "troll?" He's handsome!

Paul Giamatti always struck me as a nice guy. I'm sorry to hear that he would say something like that.

1. I'm one of the few that did not care for Sideways.
2. If the story is true, it's both rude and racist.

Pot? Kettle?

Oh, and that hair on his face gives me the gag reflex. Immeditely I think about how much food and other gross stuff is stuck and buried in it. Yuck.

I sometimes feel bad for actors who struggle and struggle for attention, and then they suddenly find attention by saying something so brain-numbingly stupid! What a jerk. At least now we all know the answer to "Whatever Happened to Paul Giamatti?"

Not troll-like in the least!

Paul, you are being ridiculous. Don't make me question my love for John Adams.

Maybe he was approving? As in "wow, they found a strange, little troll to play me, nice casting!" ;)

That was very rude of Giamatti to say that.

I guess he doesn't look at the mirror that often.

Never liked the guy now more than ever.

Captivagirl, I thought Sideways was the biggest waste of money I've ever spent at a cinema! And I still want money back.

As to his comments. feh, who looks more troll-like than him? That Japanese actor at least has some character to his face!

Maybe he was being sarcastic?

What an arrogant prick. Next time he's in a movie, remind me and I'll be sure to see something else.

Like Babs said, pot? Meet kettle. Sideways was just okay - not great, by any means.
Kohinata's MUCH better looking than Giamatti. And, for PG's rudeness, he'll only ever get my 2 cents here.

Jeez I hope he was being sarcastic. Pig Vomit, indeed.

Paul Giamiatti, is calling someone, a troll? hahahahahaha!!! oh man, this couldn't get any better. What an ass... i don't understand people sometimes. all they did was ask, and then he goes off and pull off some BS like this. way to go paul! Classy!

Paul Giammatti is a great and talented actor who has an impressive resume, but my guess is, he's not too clued into the media game.

I truly hope this was taken out of context, if it wasn't then he needs to check his mouth before he leaves the house next time. This will blow over I'm sure. The guy was brilliant in John Adams and made that horrid little film The Nanny Diaries just bearable.

Give the guy a break...you'd be grumpy too if your middle name was Valentine!

Paul: Really good, excellent, consistent actor, maybe on his way to becoming one of the greatest of all time. But what he said makes him look like an idiot.

I usually find Asian dudes unattractive (just personal preference here) but the Japanese actor is very handsome.

Pot, kettle, indeed!

Maybe he was saying that this is what they thought of him being recasted in Japan, that they thought he was a troll in the movie, and they got a Japanese troll to replace him. It's funny to me in a way, because he is a troll, and he knows it.

um, he's not playing you Paul, he's playing the character in the movie

I noticed you said the "remake was a big hit in Japan" and also "increased california wine sales in Japan"...
The movie came out 2 days ago in Japan. Isn't it a bit premature to be saying that?
