Adam Lambert Controversies Day 5

It's hard to believe it has only been five days since the American Music Awards and the whole Adam Lambert controversy and it feels like much, much longer. In case you have been busy this week and missed the news, let me recap.

Sunday night during a performance at the AMA's, Adam engaged in some simulated oral sex and made out with a male band member.

Monday, ABC retaliated by canceling Adam from Good Morning America. In his place they let Diane Sawyer tell the world why she sold her soul as a journalist and why she works for a network that embraces domestic violence.

Tuesday CBS said,"come on over to Adam" and he went on their morning show and performed.
HOWEVER, CBS blurred out the same sex kiss when reporting on the story. HOWEVER, CBS did allow the Britney Spears and Madonna kiss from MTV to be shown in its entirety.

Meanwhile over at ABC they were busy making headlines again because they decided to book Chris Brown and help him make money. You know, because domestic violence is in and same sex kissing between men is so uncool. Seriously ABC? Really? So what you are saying is that if you beat up a woman and I mean really beat the ever living crap out of her its ok and ABC will open their arms to you and let you be interviewed by a woman and let you perform and say, please make a buck off our network. However, if you kiss another guy as part of an act you are banned for life. Just wanted to check. Note to Adam Lambert. Stop kissing guys and go beat some women. ABC and the entire Disney family will love you. Oh, and that includes ESPN. Does the person who made this decision at GMA still have a job?

And at NBC they continue to have Ann Curry stalk the Jolie/Pitt clan.

I used to like Diane Sawyer. Now, not so much. When did she sell out.

Adam Lambert is gross. I do not care if he's gay. That black crap around his eyes is just offensive.

2 men snogging doesn't interest the straight men at the top as much as 2 women pretending to go at it and no doubt if they tried to ban Brown, it'd be deemed racist.

A bit of a double standard, eh? Show the women kissing and not the men?

I have zero respect for Adam and this staged event. What a tool.

I have to say, I think Adam Lambert handled himself really well on that morning show when they asked him about the performance. And he's absolutely right, had he been a woman or a straight man doing those things on stage, people would not have been as upset.

Enty,
Thanks for the concise recap. I am sick over the hypocrisy the networks have shown. I would rather see two human beings kiss on stage, than give free PR to CB, a convicted abuser who has thoughtless and unrepentant verbal diarrhea.
Pretty new to your site, first comment here. I appreciate the intelligence of your observations. The blind items drive me crazy! Enjoyed your holiday message to your readers, seems like a good group.

I don't agree Harriet. He's playing the "its 'cause I'm gay" card all the way. If Britney Spears had simulated oral sex on a male dancer on an ABC show, I'd have been just as appalled. Maybe its less about a person's sexuality and more about being tired of the hypersexualization of absolutely EVERYTHING. Not to mention, he flipped off the crowd. Again, on ABC. What did he expect?

Actually Janet Jackson had one of her dancers simulated oral sex on her during one of her dance moves and I can't recall which awards show it happened on, but the next year was the Madonna and Britney kiss..so yes there are double standards, I don't like male on male, female on female, male on female or female on male, dogs and cats..frankly I don't want to witness anyone's moves on my big screen during a musical performance..as for flipping the bird..well that's just nonsense.. Adam grow up *eyeroll*..

*simulate* double eyeroll

I like Adam Lambert. Don't like his album, though, which sounds like Lady GaGa retreads.

mngddess--he needs the black crap around his eyes to balance out the nail polish--
Otherwise he would just look silly.
I have to agree with Bad Fish--kids & tweens were watching this show--it should be about the music, not sexualizing everything. He pushed it too far.

Same as it ever was. I have to admit, I was much more optimistic that things were really changing before that damned Maine vote. :(

Is he smart enough to orchestrate something to show the hypocracy of homophobe ABC and the viewing public in general? I admire how he stood up for himself. I still think he's a crappy singer.

But Britney, Janet, Madonna, all of them have those sexually provocative performances all the time. Remember the "I'm a slave 4 U" video where Britney is all oiled up and panting and bouncing up and down on some dancers? That video was on TV at all hours, not just at night. And people were just talking about how "grown up" she had become. To me, that video was a lot more offensive than anything Lambert did on stage. There's a Janet Jackson video where she is pretty much masturbating on a couch. Again, not a nighttime video, but all hours on medium rotation. We have come to a place where women seem to be extremely confused about what is considered "strong" and "empowered".

Having said that, I have to say I didn't think his performance was that great. He didn't sound very good and it did come off as showy and staged, and I figured people would have something to say about the crotch-grinding and man-kissing. But it wasn't THAT offensive.

As for "the gay card"...as long as gay people do not have the same rights as straight people, I don't really believe that a "gay card" exists.

GMA got a nasty email from me about their double standard. Are they forgetting how provocative the performances on DWTS are?

Adam was on Letterman Wednesday (maybe Tuesday) night and gave a much better performance musically than he did the AMAs. No drama, and it was quite enjoyable.

As for the AMA disaster, AMA producers and the network were both complicit, and it happened to fail creatively. I didn't find it any more controversial than other award shows' efforts to "shock" the audience. ABC must be run by a gaggle of cowards.

Gotta agree with Harriet and the others who think there is a double standard. Obviously this is so, when you consider how many female performers, who CAN'T actually sing (I'm looking at you, Janet, Britney and sometimes Madonna), who get away with it in the name of 'feminism'. I also agree that he handles himself quite well with the media, and he even fessed up and admitted that his actual singing at the AMA's was less than good.

I'm cheering him on, and I like his voice when he's not wiggling his tongue and trying to knock the roof off. He's okay, and at least he's got natural talent, unless so many of the other shiny products out there.

I agree completely with Harriet Hellfire and the like - and good for you for writing a letter mentioning the double standard!
None of this would be a big deal if it had been Britney/Madonna redux. Sure, 'upset' people would have written in to the station, but it's not like people are going to turn down having Britney/Madonna on a subsequent show!

Does anyone else think that Adam has gotten hot???

Bottom line, controversy generates publicity which gets your name in front of the public without having to pay for it. See Lady GaGa.
I for one could care less about who Adam Lambert (or pretty much anyone else, for that matter) is shtupping.
What ever happened to talent being the primary requirement for celebrity?
That went out the window faster than Paris is outta her prom dress.
And ABC, being owned by Disney, is toxically homophobic...it's all about the Disney contract.
For an example, Bette Midler.
She used to have one of the BEST risque shows out there - then she became a Disney property and that act went the way of the dodo. She went from R bordering on an NC-17 to PG13. And you *never* hear about how she got her start singing in the Continental Baths in NY.

He's a douchebag of gay proportions. And for the record, had it been Dougie Howser, things would be ok, but he is a freaking goat. Who wants to see that loser be romantic, even with a woman!

My opinion of ABC/Disney was pretty much summed up by that South Park episode about the Jonas Brothers.

There is a reason I don't want "normal" broadcast TV .. it is run by scummy companies out for a quick buck any way they can make it.

Harriet Hellfire I have never been so in love with someone in my life~ I was reading your comment and every 2nd sentence I wanted to jump up and punch the air and hive five you. Its about so much more than what people see on the surface~ the networks are big brothering us and censorship with hidden agendas go on every sec of every day. Thank you( and enty) for looking outside the box and pointing out that while this started with an ex American Idol gay man kissing another man and gyrating explicitly on primetime it has really expanded into lots of issues that are really going on under the surface of our media, and how perpetuated by them, we often view ourselves.
I for one love when controveries like this happen on t.v. because we get to see how the people that own not just primetime cable but the news itself reacts and how trully corupt the are, and to remember we need to keep an eye onn them, so this doesnt actually become 1984, god forbid
