Mariah Carey For An Oscar?

The Palm Springs International Film Festival is awarding Mariah Carey their Breakthrough Performance Award for her performance in Precious. I have been to the Palms Springs Film Festival and I even wrote about an experience there one year. It is a serious film festival and they don't go passing out awards like candy. Well, not cheap candy anyway. They have a pretty good track record for this award. Sure the award will be presented in January and sure more people will come now they know Mariah is winning it, but Marion Cotillard won the same award for La Vie En Rose the year she won the Academy Award and Jennifer Hudson won the award the year she won the Academy Award.

So, Mariah for an Academy Award. Do you think the world would explode if that happened? Glitter to Academy Award. If she won she would require four people to lower her to a sofa in the future. She would have to probably square off against Mo'Nique but Mo'Nique has made so many people mad with her press work she might not get nominated.

awww I wanna see mimi win! and I also want to see 4 people lower her down from the sofa! You see she's helping our economy hiring these folks! ha!

I saw Precious and I was disappointed that there were not enough scenes of Mimi. She was actually good but I wanted to see more!

If she wins, prepare for Mimi to be Diva on UBER-BLAST.

I kind of hate myself for saying this, but I agree. I thought she was better than Mo'Nique. Mo' had her mo'ment. (ba dum dum) But overall I was more impressed with Mariah's performance. Maybe because she is SUCH a diva and it impressed me how much of a risk she was able to make herself take with the role. But were she not such a notorious diva would I have been so impressed? I don't know.

cant wait to see that movie...

Was she in enough scenes for her to warrent an Oscar? I hate when a famous person is in like 5 minutes of a movie and gets all this attention. Plus, like SFG said, is everyone tripping about how great she was because of the performance, or because it was such a departure from the glitter queen we all know and love/hate

Flwrgurl, you are hilarious! Queen Butterfly just cares about the economy crisis! She's helping the working man! Love it!

Damn. Glitter to Oscar? Snap. It took Jamie Foxx a while to move up from Booty Call to Ray. Go Mimi?

and hopefully this wont take away from the actor who played Precious possibly winning an Oscar, if anyone deserves to win one, she does

Uh. Mariah was good in the role, but if she had been anyone else, anyone who is not normally considered a diva--Frances McDormand, or Ben Affleck's wife Jennifer, for instance--no one would be talking Oscar. I'd like to think that the Academy Award goes to people based upon their performances, not based on how much their performances deviate from how they act in "real" life (if we can call Mimi's butterfly life a "real" life).

Probably the role that Meryl Streep played in Kramer vs. Kramer wasn't too far from who she is in real life. She won an Oscar for it--because she did a great job portraying that character onscreen. Mariah did a good job. Not a great job. She doesn't deserve an Oscar for acting like a normal human being.

I think people are drawn to that simply because we *know* how Mariah acts in real life, and how she acted in the movie, and the contrast is stunning and shows evidence of her ability. Would anyone really find it an amazing stretch for Frances McDormand or Meryl Streep to play a "real" character? Sure, they make show depth but at the same time, Meryl and Frances aren't regaling the tabloids with tales of diva antics. I think that's where this fascination comes from. Just like I would be fascinated with Hilary Swank if somehow she believably played a vapid, shallow, mindless, completely and obliviously self absorbed bimbo. Because its something she's never done, and its more than obvious that she's not at all like that.

Winning an Academy Award is easy. All you have to do is act in a film with no make up on, while looking fat and ugly. It helps if you don't comb your hair, either.

Basically, by looking bad on film you are sending a message to the Academy Award judges that you are really serious about being a good actor.

As you can plainly see from the photo above, Mariah Carey looked really horrible in this movie she was in. Therefore, it can be concluded that she may very well win many awards.

@ badfish - years ago hilsry swank played an airhead valleygirl cheerleader in buffy the vampire slayer. Like I'm talking probably almost 20 years ago!

As for Mariah - saw the movie on sunday and thought she did a wonderful job. Do I think she deserves an oscar? Not sure yet - I think gabby sidibe most definitely does.

Great film- do yourself a favor and go see it!

Even better than BAPS to Monster's Ball.

I would just LOVE to see what she would wear as a nominee to the Oscars. Oh dear God and Oprah, please make this come true.

I'd agree with the notion it's more to do with how much this is unlike the character she plays in real life, because I don't for one second believe she's truly as diva-ish as she gets away with.

Am quite looking forward to seeing the film, particularly after GladysKravitz's review.

There's a little part of me that would like to see her win. I can see it now: Nick will be spending the following day doing manly things like diva-ing up his bosses Oscar with sequin butterflies and glitter glue. Come on, she can't be expected to accept just any old Oscar.

Merlin D. Bear said...

Honestly, I can accept her getting a nom for the part.
However a win? No.
There are actresses with actual talent out there who *deserve* to win. Case in point, Ms. Gabourey Sidibe, the actress who brings "Precious" to tragic life.

Haven't seen the movie yet so I really don't know. Have heard several people say they were really surprised by how good she was though...

But wouldn't Mariah be in the Supporting Actress category?

Her walking the red carpet as a contender would be worth staying up late to see.I can't imagine what she would wear. Would she need people to walk backwards in front of her? Yes, Oprah, make it happen.

i hope the ps film fest. isn't jumping the shark. GladysKravitz has me completely stoked to see this film...it's blows my mind the thought that mariah can act. for this and a host of other reasons, i soooo have to see this film.

She won me over when she purchased Marilyn Monroe's white piano. She's a Diva who comes by it honestly and I respect her for that.

Oscar to Mimi.

I'd just like to second everything The Goon said.

I second that Oscar to Mimi!!

Hillary Swank was the Next Karate Kid, remember.

Jasmine said...

@ mabel~ except she has Marilyn's piano in this secret little room she keeps all to herself and that alone makes me annoyed. How can you have this great thing and then play the mine MINE MINE game?

Jasmine said...

> None of this has anything to do with her acting though, which once I see the film I can judge myself. Cant wait!

The Goon does speak the truth. Actresses must be thin and beautiful at all times unless they're in character - then they have to look ordinary. Everyone gasps and marvels at how someone so beautiful can transform and we're too dazzled to see the acting for what it is. Once the movie's done it's back on the coke to get thin again.

Perhaps this will sufficiently piss off Mo'Nique enough to start the bow and scrape for Oscar.

I third everything the Goon said. I was thinking the same thing. Want an Oscar in Hollywood? Ugly up and you're a shoo-in! Charlize Theron, anyone?
