Mischa Barton Sued - I'm Giving Her A Break

Mischa Barton is being sued by her New York landlord for three months rent she never paid. Last September when she thought she was going to have a job for a year or two, Mischa signed a lease on a $7000 month apartment in New York. When her shows was canceled, Mischa stopped paying her rent. You know what? I am going to give her a break. Does she owe the money? Sure. But, I bet there were a lot of people from the cast and crew of that show that are in the same situation but because their name is not Mischa Barton no one knows about it. $7000 seems like a lot for an apartment but in terms of New York and the lead on a television show it really isn't that much money. It isn't like she rented some outrageously expensive place. How many other people in the world have lost their jobs and couldn't make the payments on their home or apartment?

Maybe now we know why she is willing to play a hooker on a television show. She could have been like Lindsay and held out for some A list thing that is never going to happen. Instead she took the equivalent for an actor of working at McDonald's and made some money on SVU. Now if she could just learn her lines.

Am I dumb? I was thinking $7000/month is extremely expensive.

I don't think she deserves a break. The nature of her industry means she shouldn't sign a long lease if she can't pony up the cash.

sorry, no sympathy for the devil on this one. she's been in the business long enough to know that a show can be canceled at the drop of a hat, or that the tide can turn suddenly and you're off the gig. you don't sign a $7k/mo. lease w/ no reserves in the bank, you do the smart thing and look in the $2.5-5k range, which can be scored in some decent areas.

yep, I agree with the others, no sympathy.

No sympathy from me either.

EVEN IN NEW YORK......$7,000 IS SOME FAB APARTMENT...SHE COULD HAVE GOTTEN A REALLY NICE ONE BEDROOM IS A DOORMAN BUILDING FOR $3,500. WHICH IS STILL A CHUNK OF CHANGE....

Zero sympathy here. She works in an industry where employment is limited and short time; if anything she should be especially careful with her financial obligations. If she doesn't have the common sense and maturity to be aware of this at this stage in her life, especially after many years as a working actor, I can't summon a modicum of pity for her.

I don't know that I would liken a guest star on a long running TV show as the 'actor's equivalent to working at MacDonald's'. That's insulting to the working actors out there who actually enjoy their work and for whom a career with guest star's on a TV show helps them pay for health benefits, not to mention less expensive homes. Not all actors can be series leads in a show and not all actors spend their earnings on drugs and then wonder where all the cash they earned went.

I don't have any sympathy either. You should spend what you have, not what you think you might have in the future (a concept which I am still trying to beat into my adult children). It's a lot better to live below your means than beyond them. She's made decent money in the past, why didn't she put some of it back instead of up her nose?

You can bet that if I walked out on my lease, or stopped paying my rent, my landlord would sue me. Smaller scale, perhaps, but same thing.

Well, I get why it sucks to lose your job and not be able to pay your bills. But you can't just stop paying, thinking there won't be any consequences. Most landlords, bill collectors etc, would probably be willing to come up with a solution, like her getting out of her lease early or something. If she just stopped paying, that's just dumb.

She has BLOWN all her money, dears.

What I forgot to put in there was that the story doesn't tell whether she attempted to contact the landlord to come to a solution. It all made sense in my head.

Enty, I missed the part where she put away some of her earnings way back when for the future. Oh, wait... I guess 'living within your means" doesn't apply to celebs.

Is she still living in the apartment? Where did she stay when she did SVU? If her junk is still there, she needs to clear out so the landlord has at least a chance of re-renting it.

I do feel sorry for her because she's clearly hitting bottom.

Wow.
Seems like she'd better learn the line "$20 for a good time" real quick.
Seems as though she's going to need it.

uh, maybe it would've been better to see if her show was going to make it before signing a lease for a very expensive apartment?

sorry,no sympathy here. that's just a dumbass thing to do, especially when you're in that business.

she's blown her money and ruined her own career.

In fact I did see an article some time ago about actors/actresses on the show really left in a lurch -- they had moved to NYC for the show, it was Ashton-Kutcher-backed, and ALL of them really were stuck in bad situations. All I remember quoted in the story was the lead guy, who is a no name and this was going to be his breakout.

I don't feel bad for her. Sure her show got cancelled soon after she rented the place but that doesn't mean the landlord has to suffer for it.

And she moved out of the apartment right before she stopped paying the rent. If she's already gone, he's got to sue.

Excusing her because of her age - sorry, she often has proclaimed how mature and worldly she is. I guess that doesn't mean she's responsible.

since adulthood seems to be getting pushes further back every day, i fully expect to see a comment in the near future along these lines:
'hey man, she's only 32. cut her some slack!!'

RocketQueen said...

Yep, no sympathy here, either. Lose your job? Better get a cheaper place..but she chose not to.

And remember when Mischa thought she was too good for TV and couldn't wait to move past the OC so she could hit the big time, making arrogant statements to that effect? Hubris, Mischa.

I have some sympathy for her because of the cancellation, but (here comes my years of watching Judge Judy) she should have immediately made plans to sublet or mitigate damages. She's a celeb, for god's sake, are there no rich college kids who would have wanted to say "Dude, we're partying in Mischa Barton's place"? I'm assuming she doesn't watch Judge Judy, however, from the prostitute photos.

I have a little sympathy for her because she is just a kid and lord knows I did some really stupid shit when I was a kid. Granted, I'm only 28 now, but you know what I mean. Faces of Meth should get a pic of her from three years ago and compare it to her face now, though....so sad.
