The Video Music Awards

I watched bits and pieces of the Video Music Awards last night. I did not have much enthusiasm for the show and despite some great moments like seeing Cher going back in time, I thought the show was just kind of meh. Kanye and Taylor Swift were boring. Why did they both need to sing a song about last year? They should have just saved us the extra five minutes and sang together. I don't even bother listing the awards anymore because they are all made-up and fixed depending on who performs and shows up.

Lady GaGa and her meat is already old. I think at some point she needs to move away from the outfits and just be a performer. The outfits thing was interesting for a year, but now it is tired.

Was it nice to see Eminem and Rihanna? Sure, but I didn't think it was anything special. It was nice to see Linkin Park and I did like the B.O.B medley, but that is probably just because I like Airplanes so much. As much as I am not a fan of Chelsea Handler I thought she did a great job. It has never been an easy show to host going back to the days when Chris Rock bombed hosting it. The audience wants to see performances and don't really want to see standup. With the advent of pre-taped segments and sketches, it has become a lot easier.

Here is the link to MTV, which has been kind enough to condense the show into about 20 minutes broken up into 15 segments because even they realize it is kind of boring.

I disagree - I thought Chelsea Handler was atrocious. Watching that show made me long for the VMAs from the 80s and made me feel old. I did like Florence & The Machine - what a voice! I also liked Eminem.

Also, that Taylor Swift thing was just odd. She can't sing well and it seems pretty melodramatic to sing that song a year later and - geez - it isn't like someone is starving or died.

I'm glad I didn't watch any of it. IMO Taylor and Kanye both harped about last year because it keeps last year's controversy (and themselves) relevant.

And even though Lady Gagag's outfits are tired, trite and stolen from other performers, her devoted fans don't care. It doesn't matter if Anna Wintour, Jerry Seinfeld or anyone else criticizes her. Her fans still adore her and will relentlessly defender her. My visceral response is because they're idiots, but there's probably a nicer way to say that.

Chelsea bombed. The pre-taped skits were funny.

The most memorable part of the evening was the stage. It was gorgeous and mesmerizing. The music, on the other hand, was complete shit except for this Florence person, whose voice totally reminded me of the Cranberries.

I only watched an hour, because there was no way I was putting off Mad Men for this fuckery.

I can't for the life of me understand how Justin Bieber has fans.

I love Chelsea.

I was disappointed with Chelsea and I usually love her! She was drunk from the beginning of the show. I thought it was funny when Bieber performed and Chelsea was front row with a sign that said "Chelsea Love Justin"

The awards sucked and Chelsea did a horrible job. She is usually funny but last nite she was crap. And the black guy jokes are LAME and OLD. Please give me something new that hasn't been done or said 100,000,000 times already.
Taylor Swift CANNOT sing and her song was BEYOND melodramatic. I like her but PUH-LEASE move on.
Kanye's song was...well Kanye and I liked it.

I thought Chelsea was going to be a GREAT host and was kind of looking forward to it - but she sucked. And I agree, the entire show was terribly boring and uninteresting. Florence and the Machine was the best performance. I wanted to stab myself in the eye when Taylor and Kanye sang. And I was over Lady Gaga about 2 days after she first appeared in the business. Was by far one of the worst VA's ever IMO.

i too wish taylor and kanye hadn't rehashed last yr...but i do know it didn't come from the taylor camp...she originally was set to perform 'mine'...the mock-up stage plot was beautiful...bummed they were talked out of it.

For the longest time I was afraid Taylor Swift was the female singer in the Airplanes song (and that unnerved me because I like the song and was thinking, shit, Taylor's actually moving away from her crap to cool songs and beats).

I agree, Enty. I thought the VMA's were very BLAH. I thought Chelsea did a good job! I loved the LiLo appearance. That must have been awkward, given how much sh** she's talked about her.

I missed the Kanye song somehow & the Taylor Swift performance was WEIRD.

I thought most of the performances sucked, except maybe Usher.

I also LOL-ed at: "Lady GaGa and her meat is already old." And totally agree on those comments. My husband said there was an article in the NY Times re: what a rip off artist she was. I do enjoy her music, but wish she'd tone down the outfits. It's not shocking/interesting anymore.

It's just amazing how much time was focused on the Jersey Shore cast....

I only tuned in because of Chelsea but I lost interest FAST.
She took a crack at it she failed move on.

I love Chelsea but expected it to be funnier. It has to be tough hosting the VMA's though.

No one has mentioned Lindsay yet! What did you think? I thought she looked like she's aged about 20 years. Funny idea though of working her in.
