Eminem Says He Is Called A Homophobe Because He Is Black

Did you see Eminem on 60 Minutes last night? In the interview Anderson Cooper asked Eminem about people calling Eminem a misogynist and a homophobe. Instead of admitting he probably is, Eminem said, "I felt like I was being attacked," he replied. "I was being singled out. I felt like, 'Is it because of the color of my skin? Is it because of that that you're paying more attention?' There are certain rappers that do and say the same things that I'm saying and I don't hear no one say anything about that."

Now this interview was presumably taped prior to the whole 50 Cent thing last week, so perhaps he would not have said the same thing given the chance now, but I do think people are called out for being homophobes regardless of the color of their skin. Race has nothing to do with it. I think it is probably more likely that no one hears the rapper saying it or it does not get out to the world. If it did get out to the world, and if people actually cared about the person saying it, I don't think race would play any part.

Listen, this dick wad needs to keep his mental health in check. Maybe it's time for him to retire. So over this ass.

His talent is OVERrated. The greatest rapper? I think not.

Oh dear God, I can’t believe I’m about to say it, but here it goes: I agree that Eminem catches more flack for his homophobic and misogynist lyrics than other rappers. Now, I don’t necessarily agree that it is due to his ethnic background so much as he gets more coverage in white America than black rappers get. White America likes to have someone they can hate. As a whole, 75% of the rap being played in mainstream America is favorable towards misogynist and homophobic lyrics.

'No homo,' didn't come for an emo band.

i have to say i don't think he's homophobic. yes, he comes across that way but i seriously don't think he is. and i'm not just saying that because i love his music.

I agree with Treesap and Mom, he is not homophobic, and yes the reason he was called out is because he gets more attention then the average rapper because he is WHITE, he is a oddity and white america does not pay attention to what is going on in Black culture until their children do. Kids paid attention to Em because he was a oddity , he was WHITE in a Black dominated field. So what he says does have some merit.

What 50 cent thing???

Last week was my birthday week, so I missed a lot. :)

Em's not a homophobe.

I think it's easier in this country to attack a white rapper than a black rapper.

First, I'm not white.
Second, I think a lot of people would never say anything to a black person.

It's always easier to call someone a "g..k" than a "n....r" because people are intimidated by black people.

Easier to pick on what they perceive as a weaker minority.

BUT! I think it's okay for black rappers to use the N word because it's not being used in a hateful way.
If a white person uses the N word, it's usually used in a hateful way...I wonder if I'm making any sense??

And I don't think he's a homophobe

Mango, I think he is referring to the the whole gay people should kill themselves remark from 50 Cents. But I could be totally wrong.

Like Marilyn Manson, I think Eminem is an easy target. And I agree with the others that say because he's a minority in his genre, he's picked on faster.

And I don't really see the homophobic parts of his music. Don't quite get that.

IIRC, didn't Elton John perform with Em at the Grammy's one year? EJ's a very big out and proud performer, plus a God in the music world. I guess my point is, I don't see someone such as EJ working so closely with a person if he was anti-gay.

And at the risk of causing a fury on CDAN, I'm kind of over all of the anti-gay coverage. I know it's necessary because there are so many fuckwads out there who hate/fear the gays. I am not one of them, so I just find this whole topic redundant.

Elton John and Eminem are friends.
Eminem told Spin magazine that Elton called him once a week to help him recover from his pill addiction.

Elton also played a concert for Rush Limbaugh.

He's homophobic and probably on the downlow.

He did have a few songs with both misogynist and a homophobic lyrics, did he not? I'm assuming A Cooper wouldn't have brought it up otherwise. But is he doing anything different from all the other rappers? No. It is odd to me that he would have a friendship with Elton if he truly was a homophobe. Elton playing at Rush's wedding was a business transaction.

Maybe I'm confused, but...shouldn't the headline read, "Eminem Says He Is Called A Homophobe Because He Isn't Black"?

@Robert - Yeah I wondered the same.

Isn't EminEm the closet gay rumor? I was more disturbed by his hypocrisy about influencing kids. He said that he would never let his stuff around his kids, but I guess ours are open season for him. Madonna said the same crap about her music. Does EminEm REALLY think adults are buying his "art"?

Geebz said...

Why are parents letting their kids buy his "art"? Your kids, your house, your responsibility.

While he has his share of anti-gay lyrics, he also has songs with lyrics that support gay rights, but somehow these never get publicized. I am a big fan and have listened to much of his music both underground and mainstream. The songs I refer to can all be found on his mainstream albums though. To quote only one (because I'm sure someone will challenge my statement) in "The Real Slim Shady" he has a line that says: But if we can hump dead animals and antelopes then there's no reason that a man and another man can't elope.
Doesn't sound too intolerant to me...

firedncr said...

p.s. if anyone is unaware, the lyric above was in reference to the Tom Green show that used to be on Mtv at the time the song was released, which is where the dead animals and antelopes come in...

Agree with the poster above me. The only people that believe Eminem is a homophobe are people that have listened to about 2 of his songs. Or none of them at all, and they just get caught up in the whole anti-rap backlash. Yes I do think he is targeted because he reaches a wider (i.e. a white) audience than most rappers. And no I don't think he's a homophobe. I don't agree with a lot of the stuff he said in his earlier albums, but I love what he's putting out now, and most of it has always been a bit tongue in cheek anyway. I think as others have pointed out, Eminem has various gay friends and has spoken out in support of gay rights. And yeah he is very talented, but only every recognized in anyone over 30 for anything bad he's ever said. But there's a lot more to his music than that.

He is, no question, one of the best rappers of all time. I personally don't think he's homophobic - lyrics are sometimes just that - lyrics.
