Eric Stoltz In Back To The Future

As part of the 25th anniversary of Back To The Future, the new DVD will have some clips of the original Marty McFly. For five weeks of shooting the role was not played by Michael J Fox, but rather Eric Stoltz. After five weeks, the director, Robert Zemeckis, made the decision to fire Eric and replace him with Michael. What is more amazing is the studio let him shoot those five weeks again. It was a gamble that paid off big though.

The Hollywood Reporter got a preview of the extras that will be on the DVD.

That must have devastated Stoltz. Right call, though.

It does sound like a good call. I think Eric Stoltz is a great actor, though I'm not sure I appreciated him until the last decade or so.

I actually never enjoyed Back to the Future a whole lot and don't really understand its cult status(it left me kind of cold) but Michael J. Fox's lighter touch is exactly right for it.

OMG. I never knew that tidbit re: Eric Stoltz.

Back to the Future rocks.

Fave lines from Marty McFly's dad:

"You are my density."

"Give me a milk. Chocolate."

Wow, never knew that!

Love the Back to the Future movies and glad they went with Michael J Fox even though I like Eric Stoltz as well! Some Kind of Wonderful was such a great movie and I still appreciate it now :-)

See Enty items like this is why this is so much more than a great gossip/pop culture blog.

How devastating this must've been for Stoltz, though there is no question it was the right call.
Just these short clips alone reveal he had far too much gravitas to make the movie work.

Thanks for this; great item.

Finally we get to see Stoltz as McFly! I've heard about it for ages so it's cool to finally see him in the role.

Of course, they made the right decision. Stoltz is a good actor but Michael J. Fox has the most incredible knack for comedy. He is Marty McFly.

Damn, I'm going to have to buy this DVD when it comes out.

Back to the Future is one of my favourite movies of all time and I can't picture anybody but Michael Fox as Marty McFly. I'm going to the 25th anniversary screening too. I've seen the movie about 30 times. Love it!

Besides his charisma and better grasp of comedy, I'm sure it helped immensely that MJF was never afraid of hard work and a VERY fast study.

I'm sure Eric was mad about that franchise money for a long time, but I think he's always been suited to drama or character roles. He's still a working actor, so he's much luckier than most in that business.

I think they made the right call, but I wonder...it would have been a completely different movie with Eric Stoltz as McFly. And I kind of wanna see it! *L*

Is this the same Eric Stoltz that directed last night's "Glee" episode? Couldn't find anything online about it...
