American Idol Winner Named In Advance

Apparently someone at FOX or the people who count the votes could not keep a secret. For the first time I can remember, the winner of Idol was announced about 8 hours prior to the show actually airing. Matt Drudge announced the winner of the show yesterday afternoon, got it right and said it was not even close. By now we all know that Scotty McCreery won Idol and I am sure he will be a big country star. I think Lauren Alaina (who should have won) will have an album or two, but I worry about her long term success. Anyway, Drudge went on to say that Scotty won by double the votes and it was the biggest blowout in Idol history.

That scoop is pretty impressive. Yes, you have a 50% chance of being right if you are guessing, and FOX does not release individual vote totals so there is no way of knowing if it was that big of a blowout, but you are still announcing the winner and you are going to look foolish if you are wrong.

Mere words cannot express how little I care about any of these contest reality shows and the people on them. Just thought I'd mention this, since we've had two of these posts in a row.

A.I. officially began its slow descent when TAYLOR HICKS won.

he's adorable...i liked the lauren girl initially too...but this kid handled himself better w/ the press thru-out...better presence, yadda, yadda, and i was sold...i especially liked his sweet irish-puerto rican combo, and how he handled latin media, very endearing...you'd never think he was only 17. go him!

as for the results...crap like that happens, and it does w/ any show that uses a a numbers/polling system (i'm looking at you, billboard awards)...in fact, often, if the show REALLY wants (read: needs) an artist to perform/present, they let them know beforehand that they've won. call it incentive. it's not a shocker...except maybe in the case of idol, where they'd been better about keeping it under wraps.

I'm from Hoover, AL, which is where Taylor Hicks is from (sorry Ida). That year we all voted for him, and there was a website that somehow knew the percentages of each contestants votes. I can't recall what it was now, but it was 100% accurate as to who got voted off and who were the bottom 2.

ida's right. AI lost what little relevance it had when taylor hicks won. what a travesty that was. also having someone like sanjaya stick around as long as he did made the whole show into a joke.
i don't watch it and won't watch it again. couldn't care less anymore.

@Terri -- it's cool. I can understand rooting for a hometown boy. I was an Elliot Yamin supporter ALL the way that season, and I have to admit that it's partly because he's from VA. :-)

As a Canadian who can't even vote for it, I hate to admit that I watch AI over CI (yes we have one - I think--). Didn't watch for a few years after Taylor Hicks won. I did like him but he was a one trick pony. I thought the top 7 or 8 this year were very good and really enjoyed the finale last night. Scotty has an unusual voice, while Lauren's type is a dime a dozen, and I think that's why he won. One downside, he just reminds me of George Bush too much. I wanted the guy with Tourette's to win.

Sanjaya TOOOOOOOTALLY sucks, but his album cover is awesome in a pee-your-pants-guffawing kinda way:

You know why I truly don't like Idol anymore? It's the joke auditions. They went from letting egomaniacal caterwaulers have their five minutes or so of fame to plucking STRAIGHT-UP CRAZY people off the street and having them sing, like, Barry Manilow tunes. NOT cool. I find it extremely meanspirited. It's not entertaining to me at all.

I will acknowledge, however, that I still find William Hung hilarious.

I don't watch this show anymore but I wonder what the producers told the girl before the finale. It kind of takes the wind out of your performance no? The vote is over but there is still a two hour show.

The site that predicted winners was dialidol I think they now try to predict it from the traffic on twitter (which correctly predicted who would go home...the person going home each week had the highest amt of twitter traffic, oddly). The winner also correlates with Facebook fans. There are lots of ways to know that Scotty was going to win this thing, long before yesterday.

I am glad he won. His voice sounds so polished and professional. He reminds me a lot of Carrie Underwood - a bit wooden in performance, but with a golden voice. Alaina's voice is good, but not that unique. Scotty will have a huge career.

It was clear by this year's AI lineup that they have already combed the country of all the attractive people, and I know that shouldn't be the reason they win, but wow they were a homely looking bunch.

I am glad Scotty won. I was tired of seeing Alaina's tears. She's a sore loser. She will also try to keep herself relevant by staying close to Scotty. I don't get a good vibe from her.

So glad you posted this Enty. I knew I read the winner on Drudge yesterday during my lunch and was confused as to why my FB friends were posting last night that they couldn't wait to hear who won.

I never watch AI so I had no clue I was reading leaked news.

I just watched the finale and thought it was pretty entertaining (even though I knew the winner - Thanks Internet!)

I was rooting for Lauren (and Paul) from the beginning and I think her voice is beautiful. She and Scotty seem like genuine sweet, good kids.

With this show you JUST never know what will happen. Winners or losers, they can skyrocket or end up at the county fair the next year.

Scotty was always going to have a big career. I wanted James Durbin or Casey to win. They definitely deserved to be at the final. Also, during the finale, the guys from Idol obviously all get along and were having a great time during their group performance. The women were trying to out diva each other and there was no warmth between them, so on that basis I am pleased one of the guys won AI.

Though they are sometimes wrong, dialidol.com had Scotty winning by a landslide. I would have taken a chance & made the same call as Drudge. From what I saw, Scott was getting the votes week after week.

Kathy K said...

Yep -- that was an easy one to call, and I believe dialidol was right all season. I remember when Pia was voted off and everyone said that it was fixed, but dialidol always had her way down in the votes. Ultimately, Nigel spoke up and said Pia was NEVER in even the top 3 of the votes, and dialidol had always shown it the same way.

Out of the two finalists, I really think he deserved it more. She has a beautiful voice and is very charming but also seems incredibly insecure (what 16 year old girl isn't). She also kept playing the "cute" card which annoyed me to no end. She kind of seemed like a brat at times. I think Scotty is more mature for his age and probably better suited to handle fame. Well, Lauren will probably get a record deal too sooner or later...since they're supposedly dating (it was cute how she couldnt stop kissing on him after the announcement), it wouldn't surprise me if they do at least one duet, and get marketed as the next Tim McGraw/ Faith Hill.

While I am talking about American Idol on the internet (because I'm THAT CHICK), I would also like to express my disdain for the group numbers they do. Seriously, it's painful. It's like a completely failed version of Glee, just painful to watch.

And finally (THAT. CHICK.) I would like to say that Hayley was my favourite (other than Casey, but you know he was too weird to win. Her singing "Steppin' Out With My Baby" with Tony Bennett was PERFECTION. And I don't even LIKE that song *L*.

Meg said...

@Maja - I liked Haley A LOT too. Her voice is very unique. I've pretty much loved everything she's sung but I didn't always like her attitude.

I agree on the group stuff, always have. But I find the Ford commercials they make them do way worse to endure. ;)

I didn't know Lauren/Scotty were dating!

All you had to do was go to dialidol to know that. They will be the next Taylor Hicks and Kathryn McPhee, whose names I am surprised I even know.

James Durbin could be the next Adam or Daughtry, a career I would rather pick. If you don't work for Disney, good luck. Hello David A?

@ Ida - I must be tired; I read that as "Idi Amin supporter" for a crazy moment, lol
