John Lackey Divorcing Wife Who Is Battling Cancer

Red Sox pitcher John Lackey is having a horrible year and is one of the reasons for the Red Sox horrific collapse. Because he wants people to think even worse of him he decided this past week to file for divorce from his wife of less than three years. Oh, he is doing while she is fighting breast cancer. Back in March, John's wife had a double mastectomy and has had chemo as recently as June. This is a crap move. Would it hurt you to stick with your wife and try and help her through this? Are you in such a hurry to move on to some groupie you met in a hotel lobby that you need to dump your wife while she is going through breast cancer? Seriously?

I don't think you can put the guy through the wringer until we find out more as to why they are splitting up - cancer or no. Maybe the wife was cheating on him; maybe the marriage had been falling apart for months; maybe SHE was the one that walked away and he's doing the filing. Unless there is proof of a groupie in a hotel lobby, there's a whole lot of assumptions going on in this post.

I certainly hope there's more to the story.

Listen, I broke up with my boyfriend who had leukemia in his hospital bed after he had a bone marrow transplant. His mother hated me and was picking fights with me in his hospital room. I thought it was best for his recovery and my own health that we be apart. Almost 20 years later, I do not regret it. We did get back together after he was out of the hospital but he died.

In the words of our pastor, his mother was a beast but the years have made me have more empathy for her and her situation.

We do not know what they have gone through and what their reasoning is.

Yeah, I'm with MacVixen and Ms. Cool on this one. Couples break up for myriad reasons - I can't judge this guy without knowing all the facts.

I have no idea what the real story is, but I know how hard it is to watch someone you love go through the treatment for cancer. I've done it with my mom and several friends and it was brutal. But as hard as it was I'd do it all over again.

A friend divorced her husband while she was fighting breast cancer (well, as soon as she finished treatment). She had a life-is-too-short epiphany and she wanted to stop wasting her energy on a loser husband and save it for fighting her husband.

I hope this is one of those she's better off without him situations.

Best thoughts and wishes for the wife.

And I can't wait to see the Red Sux get eliminated in the coming days... Yankees for life.

Between this and Eric Betard being sued for child support, no wonder the Sox are tanking. Of course, I'm a Pittsburgh Pirates fan so I have no room to talk about tanking.

Yeah, I agree with what some other posters said...we don't know the whole story here. It sounds like a dick move, sure but it could very well be a mutual decision. And battling a disease doesn't automatically make you a saint either...*L*

I cannot believe his Agent allowed him to do this. I also bet Enty is on to the right reason here. She does not have her D plus breasts anymore and he will replace her with a younger woman. I guess he forgot the for better or worse part of his marriage vows. But, yes there are two sides to every story. I bet the wife's is a good one.

Sounds like they never should have married in the first place. Not even 3 years? They can't annul??

She can do better. And she will.

Go Brewers!!!!!

I agree with the general consensus here. I know someone this happened to as well. They were just not getting along. In the least. They decided to divorce but kept it quiet until things were settled. He began dating another woman, which she was fine with.... they were done. A few weeks later she was diagnosed with cancer so they were stuck with the realization that even though it was agreed upon before the cancer diagnosis to outside people it would look like he was a douchebag divorcing his cancer-ridden wife.

I'm with MacVixen.
I am sure there are many details that we are not aware of. Maybe this is what the wife wants.

Typical man. This isn't surprising at all. The nyt had an article about men who leave their ill wives. There's been studies about this.

An oncologist did some research and wrote an article about the effect of cancer on marriages. He found that women whose husbands get cancer overwhelmingly stay with and support their husbands, but a disturbingly high percentage of husbands whose wives get cancer end up divorcing their wives.

He became curious about this when he eventually realized that he was consistently seeing male patients' wives in his waiting room, but after the first few visits, he seldom saw the husbands of his female patients.

Agreeing with most. We don't know the whole story. If he's leaving her but whatever dumb reason instead of helping her go through this, then she's better off without him on this. When getting over such a serious decease, it's best to have people that truly love you and make you stronger. If he isn't doing both of these things the better for her.

I'd hardly say this is "typical" of men, Missy. Jesus.

Newt Gingrich did the same thing to his first two wives.

Wife #1 was literally in the hospital recovering from cancer surgery when he gave her the divorce papers.

Wife #2 was diagnosed with MS, The door didn't hit him in the butt.

As a Yankees fan, I probably should recuse myself here because you'd think I would have a bias. But while I don't like Lackey much, I know enough about human nature to know that many people are incapable of remaining in a marriage with someone who has experienced a major life change. Things smaller than cancer drive people apart. What was going on between them otherwise?

As a baseball fan in general, I also know that baseball players are some of the biggest douchebags who have ever lived. I loves me some A-Rod, but ... you know. Do I even have to say it? There's some moral weakness going on in baseball. They chew tobacco at work. They drink a lot. Cocaine and amphetamines were the norm before drug-testing. C'mon.

growing up i had a good friend who's father was diagnoised w/ MS. immediately the wife left, telling people, "that's not how i want to spend my life! taking care of someone; no. i had my kids young so i could have fun in my retirement". w/i a year some long lost relative of the dad died and left him a bizillion dollars, including a ranch in montana. the wife wanted to get back together. that was a no. the kids were so pissed at their mom for leaving the dad that they stopped speaking to her. the dad was dead w/i a few years and the 2 kids got everything. the mom is in her 70's now, still working and "very bitter" about how her family has treated her (hello). she's friends w/ my next door neighbor, so i see her every once in awhile.
