George Michael Hospitalized With Pneumonia

After canceling a concert with just two hours notice earlier this week, it was announced that George Michael had been hospitalized in Austria with pneumonia. Apparently he has now been released but is being treated at a private house while recovers. He has canceled shows through the beginning of next week. I know I can be Mr. Conspiracy sometimes, but I am not buying the whole pneumonia thing. I am wondering if it might be a relapse. There have been some whispers that he might have fallen off the wagon and if you do fall off it can be really rough when you do so. In any event, I do hope he recovers quickly.

My guess is relapse. Poor George, he is such a mess now.

Either one could be true; I had pneumonia 25 years ago for Christmas (yeah, happy freakin' holidays...), and I know how wiped out it left me then, so I can imagine how bad it would be at my and George's age. No matter, I hope he's doing much better soon.

Also, unless you're on an IV or need oxygen, there's not really anything they can do for you in the hospital that can't be accomplished at home (or the equivalent thereof), where it's a lot easier to get the rest you need. I always have to laugh at stories of people being hospitalized for "exhaustion," because anyone who's ever been in the hospital knows you won't get any damn rest in there!

Another horrible possibility crossed my mind here: could he be HIV+ and getting sicker? I really hope not, but he's definitely taken lots of chances w/his health in the past...

This is one case where pneumonia may actually be good news.

all singers get sick on the road, it just happens. I do agree though that I don't think he takes very good care of himself either.

I remember how dreamy he was in the 80s. George, get your shit together.

Can't you get a very fever with pneumonia? Some people do get hospitalized for it. Who knows what the case is with GM.

I think it's pneumonia. I follow him on twitter and facebook and this has been a pretty big deal of a tour for him. He had cancelled a concert a few weeks ago with illness and throat problems, doesn't surprise me he picked up an infection out on the road. Relapse is a possibility, but I have my doubts he ever got completely clean. He probably got off the drugs, but I'm not so sure he ever gave up drinking entirely. His voice is his paycheck and he learned a few years ago to stop at the first sign of trouble.

timebob - Yes, Careless Whispers George Michael was awesome!

I know a lot of people who recently have had pneumonia, so I can believe that's what he had.

Aids related pneumonia. He's the one that sleeps around unprotectedly and refused to get an aids test (by his own admission) in the past decade, right?

I'm with you, Robin the Mad Photographer, on all that you said. I also had pneumonia, at Christmas-time, more than 20 years ago. I was supposed to the country, skiing for the holidays. My doctor said I could only go if I stayed indoors. And then told me it was very easy to have a relapse, and threatened to hospitalize me if that happened (he was kind of a scary guy, lol).

And yes, Rose, you can run a high fever. I had 103 and could barely move.

that should say **supposed to go** to the country.

Normally I would agree, but after getting pneumonia myself in October, nearly every single person I know, and every person I know online, has gotten pneumonia. I don't know if it's especially bad this year or what, all I know is I've never seen so much pneumonia in my life as I have this year. And it put my dad in the hospital for a week.

With other health problems complicating things, you very easily can find yourself hospitalized with pneumonia. I've been battling bronchitis for two weeks, on top of COPD, and just yesterday at the doctor's office, he did a chest x-ray and said "Well, you've escaped the hospital this time". So it could be just pneumonia, but my first thought when I saw the article was HIV+.

Syko .. can you get the pneumonia shot? I got one due to my transplant and chronic asthma. Thought perhaps it might help keep you healthy? Regardless, hope you feel better soon. Will send well wishes out through the cosmos for ya!

I was thinking AIDS/HIV for George. He apparently refuses to be tested and engages in extremely high risk behavior. I will hope not .. but he is just such a hot mess when he is off the wagon. : /

@ Wil.. yes, I've had the pneumonia shot, but my lungs are so wrecked, I only have 35% capacity, so not even a vaccine can totally stop it. DON'T SMOKE! I'm old enough that it was cool when I started. Hasn't been cool for a long time, but I kept on doing it until my COPD exacerbated and I spent New Year's in the hospital on IVs.

I hope your tests come out okay, it's pretty shitty that you have to wait out a holiday weekend. I'm hoping it's not cancer, and if it is, that it's easily treatable and you recover quickly. Good luck!

Back in Jr. High, My best friend and I LOVED Wham and we would say he was the type of guy we wanted to marry! Teen celebrity crushes (and yes, my husband gives me grief about it every time a Wham song comes on) We had pictures of him from Tiger Beat in our locker and we wore those big shirts!
Had a chance to see him in concert years ago and he was awesome. Hope this is nothing serious and he is back and in good health soon!

Get better, George! I still need to see you in concert since I bailed that one time.

Hey Robin the Mad Photographer, I agree with you. The first thing I thought of is HIV. With his background of bathroom sex, I'm sure he didn't use protection. I think it's HIV.
