Oprah & James Earl Jones Get Academy Awards
Last night, Oprah and James Earl Jones received honorary Academy Awards. Oprah got hers for charity work and James Earl Jones got his because everyone knows he should have several of them by now and everyone feels bad about the whole thing. All the focus was on Oprah though because James stayed in London where he is starring in Driving Miss Daisy so had to appear via video. Oprah cried through her whole acceptance speech. She has actually been nominated for The Color Purple and if Precious had won for best picture she would have won an Academy Award for that because she was a producer of the movie. The award was presented to her by Maria Shriver who used to work with Oprah way back in the day in Baltimore.

I can understand JEJ for his body if work, but why did Oprah get one?

Oprah's a TV personality. A Lifetime Achievement Emmy, sure, but an Oscar?
She got the Humanitarian Award for Charity work. These are the two lifetime achievement awards that used to be presented on the show, but aren't anymore.
Oprah's a member of the Academy as well, as an actor and producer, even though she is much more famous for TV.
Honestly, I'd kind of forgotten about her for the last few weeks. That's kind of strange, she'd been on my TV pretty much every day for most of my adult life.
Why does charity work deserve an Oscar? If nothing else, Oscars are nothing but a bit old money grab scam to get people to pay money to see a movie. I would hardly call it charitable.
I still need to see Precious. I read the book, and it was wonderful. It is one of the rare movies I would see after reading. I don't think they can really ruin it.
They have always given humanitarian awards...charity would fall under this..
But you should watch THE COLOR PURPLE, she was wonderful.
I don't like honorary anything, especially degrees. Either you've earned it or you haven't. *shrugs shoulders*
For the record, Oprah would not have received an Oscar had Precious won Best Picture. She was an Executive Producer and the award goes to the Producers only, not the Executive Producers.
Enty, are you sure to work in Hollywood bussiness? because the executive producers ( Winfrey for PRECIOUS)don't win award!

And yet Steven Spielberg never rec'd one for all the work he did. Oprah (while talented no doubt) got recognized having only been involved in only two films. Go figure. JEJ on the other had was WAAAAAAY overdue.
When I first heard months ago that she was getting this Oscar, I was up in arms figuring they were just kissing her a$$.
Now though, I understand it is a humanitarian award (which I didn't know they gave out). Of course charity work falls under its umbrella. And with all of the charity/humanitarian work Oprah has done, of course she deserves it.
Wouldn't executive producer be a notch above regular producer? Thus the "Executive" part added to the title. Seems strange regular producers would get awards but executives would not.
So, is Oprah still claiming to be a size 10? I have never cared for her over-hyped bullshit. And, she is loud. She is way too loud.
@Princess: If the entertainment business made sense, then yes, the added title of Executive would be the higher credit. But in film, the premiere credit is that of Producer (and eligible for the Oscar), while in TV the Executive Producer is highest in the ranks (and runs the show). Go figure!
Why didn't they ask her to host the Oscars?

I don't really have a problem with the award since it was to honor her philanthropic efforts.
James Earl Jones should get an award for that amazing voice of his. I cannot believe he's 80!
Oprah is a billionaire Hollywood wants her to pump her OWN money into movies to keep the town a float.
Wow, lot of haters here. Good for Oprah and JEJ, both of them fully deserving.
Oprah has NEVER looked so bad....from her hair, makeup and style of dress. I guess this is her true look w/o the million dollar stage lighting we were so used to seeing her in on a daily basis. Yikes!
