Bungee Cord Snaps - Woman Falls 350 Feet Into Crocodile Infested Waters Tied At The Feet And Lives

Thankfully because I am so large, I never have to worry about bungee jumping. There is no cord strong enough to take my weight. Erin Langworthy was in Zambia with some friends and decided to bungee jump off a bridge, above a crocodile infested river. Yeah. So, as the video shows below, Erin's bungee broke and she fell into the river still with her feet bound together but she managed to make it out of the rover alive. The company that runs the bungee says it is looking into the incident but it is apparently still open and operating.

And this is why I will never go bungee jumping

I have been in several African countries where I have seen these set up and if I was ever going to bungee jump, I would never EVER do it in a poor country where the nearest hospital is a million miles away (not that it would do you any good, just saying), and you would not be able to sue anyone for your troubles, HELL 2 DA NO!

That is some hubris. Wow.

That wasn't a brave thing to do. It was just foolhardy. She's a moron, and I hope the locals are laughing their asses off.

"This isn't scary enough for me.... How about in a 3rd world nation and add in some crocs?"

I saw on the news last night that she also broke her collarbone. So she swam a croc infested river with her feet tied AND a borken collarbone!

Patty said...

Why would you do this in the first place? Stupid.

What freaked me out was that she was in the water. Impact and then the instinct is to kick your feet to get to the surface but she couldn't! Is that's what is called "the hand of god"?

No. Simply put, No.
(and yes the capitalization is intentional)

My god, another nightmare come to life. Noooooo thank you.

Bungee jumping anywhere is idiotic, but in some third-world country???? These people need a Darwin Award. When you watch the video, you can see that the cord is extremely frayed! Who would look at that cord and think "Yeah, throw me off the bridge!" Idiots!

Gypsy said...

If I didn't think I was one in a billion, I probably wouldn't be here right now. I am the one. The one out of a billion whose bungee cord would break in to crocodile waters. Hell to the no. No fn way. Not for all the iced tea in Texas.

First off...WTF?? Why were the people working there not doing anything but looking down? Why aren't there people below, watching for safety measures? Why was her friend still holding the camera and filming? Why wasn't she really freaking out...and where were her other friends? I know I would have thrown the camera down. I would have been screaming and yelling at everyone to do something..."how do I get the F--k down to my friend."

I work with a lady whose zip line broke in costa.rica...she.broke her hip, pelvis and back in the fall, and she was.lucky

i'm a bit of an adrenaline junkie, and have bungeed several times...this was at victoria falls...it has GOT to be absolutely stunning, i can see the appeal. but yeah, something like that, for all the beauty in the world, yet in a 3rd world country--no thanks. what bothers me most is the (seemingly) lackadaisical attitude of the group. is it b/c of shock? i'd be all DO SOMETHING!!! what a weird vibe.

Your friend is in the water and all you can do is point a camera and say, 'Oh my god...' DO SOMETHING.

I'm with .robert. Already I can't believe I've lived this long. Bungee jumping just never makes it past the risk assessment.

Yeah, bungee jumping off my bucket list too! That cord was so worn out and frayed there was no way she should have jumped. Good gooogly mooogly!

Murphy Brown 2020 said...

Well, in defense of her friends, what were they SUPPOSED to do? Jump in and go after her?

Sasha said...

Does it show her reaching shore somewhere?

crila16 said...

@Elvira ... No...not jump and go after her. put the camera down and figure out how to get to her instead of pointing a camera and saying "OMG...wow." You'd have thought that being her friend she would have been more panicked and her immediate, automatic reaction should have been concern. I agree with MonsterInc. I would have been flipping out if it were one of my friends. I would have yelled at the guy running the place and told him to drive me to the bottom immediately.

Murphy Brown 2020 said...

@Crila16, we don't know WHO was holding the camera, but I doubt it was one of her friends, considering how you can hear a few different people freaking out in the background. There were a bunch of "oh my God"s and "holy shit"s, which seem like appropriate reactions to me. It could have been the person leading the tour who took this footage with a cellphone, knowing that it would bring him/her some cash if a news outlet were to buy it -- which is apparently what happened.

It takes considerable time to reach a platform that high. Even if they were to descend it and drive to shore to conduct a search and rescue, most people in this girl's situation would have already become croc fodder. She is LUCKY.

They're ALL morons for bungee jumping in this location. You don't mess with crocs. These people are beyond saving. If they didn't learn a lesson from this experience, then Darwinism will kill each of these fools before they reach middle age.

WTF! Not only is she swimming with both feet tied together & a broken collar bone, in CROC INFESTED waters, but she's being dragged into rapids by the heavy bungee. This girl's more than lucky, she's got a damn horseshoe up her a$$!! I bungee'd, 200 ft above a rock quarry -filled with water of course- & there were two boats anchored below to help you out. This is what I'd call a Mickey Mouse operation...

Robin the Mad Photographer said...

No way. NO way. NO F#@!NG WAY!!! I'm deathly afraid of heights, so I won't even be watching the footage, much less contemplating something so dumbassed myself! *huddles up in fetal position*

To everyone commenting about the friends and the cameras, have you seen people these days? They don't put their fucking cameras down for anything.

Last summer, there was a very very minor fire in my building. As we were all standing around waiting to be cleared to go in, the dumbfuck behind me had his iPhone going the whole time, taking a video of smoke wafting from a window. WTF?

Last month I saw Prince and people were livid they couldn't take pictures. How many concerts have you been to where there's an idiot beside you taking non-stop pictures rather than enjoy the concert?

Every dumbass wants to be the one to upload a video that goes viral so they'll record everything rather than live.

I don't like to be scared. No skydiving, no mountain climbing, don't like roller coasters and you sure as hell would not catch me bungee jumping (over croc infested waters, no less).

This girl is incredibly lucky.

I want to know what happened w/ the company in the aftermath!

I had already made the decision never to bungee jump, and this just seals the deal for me.

I agree, Anita. I don't even carry my camera that often when I'm on vacation, because worrying about pictures takes away from the experience.

OMG. Just one question: Reader Photos Part 3 on 12/29/11 -- Reader #6: It was an incredible image, but was there more to your story, and the latter part of the jump just slipped your mind?

And one statement: The only way i'd bungee jump would be if the owner of the operation was roped in with me. And i had statements from the owner's doctor and lawyer that [s]he had every reason to live.
