Adele looked fantastic!

Still though...I get so weary of awards shows just HEAPING awards on the flavor of the year. Taylor Swift at the CMAs, Adele this year at the Grammys, usually the "big" movie of the year at the Oscars...it makes it SO boring. And aren't there ANY other artists/songs/movies/etc worthy of awards? Seriously?

Audrey said...

Yep, agree. Honestly, I'm not familiar with most of these acts anyway. I know their names from the gossip sites, but don't listen to the music (except for Adele). Now, at least I know what Bruno Mars looks and sounds like. Not missing much...

Chris Brown won an effing Grammy!? I feel sick.

surfer said...

I would have liked to see more award presentations during the telecast - it was like one big concert (not that I don't love live performances, but...). It makes you wonder if they had trouble finding people to perform, as a number of artists performed more than once.

Also, what do you make of Beyonce/Jay Z and Kanye not showing? Could it possibly have had something to do with Chris Brown performing?

Lauren said...

If that is the reason they didn't show then more ppl need to be like them. What he did to Rihanna is disgusting. And now you're handing him an award like all is forgiven? The fact that he actually won a Grammy is outrageous to me. Now he's really going to think he's untouchable smh.

@figgy - I agree that there is plenty of talent out there, but it comes down to what the mainstream corporate recording industry wants to promote, and as usual, it's image instead of talent. So what we get in the end of is medocre music (at best) presented to the masses. So unless you have the tenacity to go out there and find the talent yourselves, this is what we're stuck with. The kids have the energy to find the good music - I don't anymore, so a lot of us listen to what the powers that be think will make put megabucks in their pockets.

In this day and age, artists like Adele are something of an anomaly - someone with real talent who has a recording contract. I'm happy for her - very few people give me chills when I hear them live.

Taylor Swift seriously needs to grow the fuck up. She wrote a song to her critics -- who are just doing their fucking JOBS when they point out that she can't sing at ALL -- and she called it ''Mean''? Seriously? And why did it look like some Depression-era hoedown?

I hated Coldplay's performance. I adore their first two albums with all my heart, but they've grown unbelievably pretentious.

The Chipotle commercial where Willie Nelson covers ''The Scientist'' was kinda my personal highlight of the whole telecast.

I want to know who, exactly, was clapping for Chris Brown, so I can boycott the shit out of them.

WTF was up with Nikki Minaj? Is she British now? Isn't she from Queens? Who the hell is ROMAN? At least Gaga has a legitimately powerful voice to back up her outlandish attire. I'd rather bang my head against a boulder than voluntarily listen to that shit. God.

Glen Campbell rocked it harder than Nikki, sorry.

Gee, I wonder if Katy was singing that eff you song to anyone in particular? I loved that ice blue Elie Saab she wore, though.

Rihanna in that black Armani was perfection. My god.

Adele was sweet, and really did deserve everything. I liked how grateful she was, and how she didn't feign shock whenever she won (*ahem*).

JHud made me choke up. I'll admit it.

That's all I got.

Oh, one more thing: Bon Iver needs some shampoo.

And what about the Beach Boys - Mike Love looked like he was struggling with his voice, and poor Brian Wilson - we all know about his stage fright and personal demons, but hell, he looked scared and extremely uncomfortable - like he was forced to be there.

Lauren said...

Could not have said it better!

MISCH said...

Adele looked amazing in the long black Armani.

I think Beyonce knew it was not going to be her night, and you know everything has to be about her...
I doubt they stayed away because of Chris Brown...but it's not a bad excuse.

Murphy Brown 2020 said...

I agree with MISCH. Completely.

Mother Campfire said...

Ya, I'm going with 'new baby' as the excuse.

Ida - Coldplay has never been a strong live performer. And yes, they are pretentious...well at least their lead singer is, which is funny since he's the reason they're such poor live performers.

Taylor Swift seriously needs to grow the fuck up.

Thank you! She's the country-fried Mariah Carey.

I would say that the Grammys DID go toward actual talent this year over mainstream. I am SO happy that Bon Iver received Best New Artist and NOT f'ing no-talent Nikki Minage or Skrillex (i.e. the guy who plays on his computer and calls it music). Justin Vernon and Adele are MUSICIANS. The rest are just performers. I was pretty happy with the outcome (minus Chris Brown. Ick).

Anonymous said...

Ugh. I wonder how much you can get away with and still win a Grammy? Chris Brown is obviously forgiven by a lot of people.

Anonymous said...

I never watch the Grammys because they suck. Need proof? Katy Perry gets a nomination. That would be like an Adam Sandler comedy getting a nomination. You may like it but it's not the best amongst its peers.

A friend texted to say Sprinsteen was on so I watched that, then watched a bit until Chris Brown came out to perform. I couldn't believe that. I turned it and never went back. But let's face it, how can the Grammys compete with TLCS's Sunday line-up of Hoarding: Buried Alive and My Strange Addiction. The guy was in love with his car!!!!!!

Hazeldazel said...

Did they actually leave off Etta James in the In Memoriam segment? Really? because if so, O.M.G.

Maja With a J said...

I had recorded the show to fast forward through tonight, but after Ida's recap, I feel like I can just delete it now...*L*

Robert said...

I also think that Whitney Houston's death gave short shrift to what might have been much more of an Amy Winehouse tribute night; her dad was in the second row and looked like he was waiting for LL Cool J to say something early on, but it didn't happen, just a blurb in the "In Memoriam" section. That said, LLCJ did handle the opening bit very well.

skeeball said...

@anita_mark~I know!! the guy in love with his car is sooo going to lose his job and get the shit beat out of him!! freaky!!!

Love the freak show that is TLC

GladysKravitz said...

Exactly what I've been saying on fb, Ida!

A few more things though: that first performance of Paul McCartney was horrid. And Chris Brown PERFORMED. Twice.

Did you know that Tina turner's version of "What's Love Gotta Do With It" was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame (or whatever it's called) this year? No? That's because it wasn't mentioned. Instead the Grammys chose to let Woman Beater Chris Brown perform twice.

Anonymous said...

@Skeeball, I was in complete shock at that one. Of course the baby powder was beyond disgusting. Not as disgusting as the woman eating cat food. As for the 44 year-old (she didn't look that old) addicted to mothballs, I was more worried for her kitty.

Murphy Brown 2020 said...

@Gladys -- people who say Chris Brown ~deserves a second chance~ and ~is capable of rehabilitation~ piss me off more than most. And, apparently, a shitton of those people vote on who gets a Grammy, and who gets to perform. And his performances SUCKED. Autotune city.

And then, there's this. OH MY GOD.

Anonymous said...

@Ida: Holy hell... WTF is wrong with these people??!!

Gotta say my man Dave Grohl rocked last night and LOVED his dig on all the autotuning bullshit they call music =) The Deadmau5 shit freaked me out, but I still love my Foos!!

Susan said...

Did these assholes really give Taylor Swift a standing o for that hoedown fuckery about mean people?!? Seriously. I felt like I was in the Twilight Zone while watching this shit. I appreciate Taylor Swift for her wholesomeness, but her lyrics are so sixth-grade journal... I just can't get behind that.

The mikes were totally messed up during Kelly Clarkson's duet with the country guy. I loved all of the country music performances, and I am so not a country music fan.

Fool me once with Chris Brown on my tele; fool me twice, and I say, "Fuck you, Grammys." Yeah. I turned that shit off during the danceoff fuckery. I just couldn't handle it. And his "aw shucks" act when he won the Grammy. Gag!!!!

Adele was fabu. I liked her performance dress better than her red carpet dress. Her hair and makeup were perfection. Rihanna's dress was gorgeous, but her hair was awful. Nobody had stunning hair, IMO, besides Adele.

Katy Perry looks like a No. 1 asshole with that blue hair. What is she trying to prove with that?

I am a huge Bruce Springsteen fan, but seriously. Has the guy recorded something that sounds unique and different in the past 15 years? All his new shit has the same sound.

Loved the Foo Fighters, natch. Grohl looks exactly as he did in 1992. I love that he was able to reinvent himself and still be relevant and successful.

Paul McCartney's performance put me in a coma. His voice still sounds great, though.

LL did a good job. He's so hot.

Not too many chill-up-your spine performances for me. Just Adele.

I don't understand Coldplay. Seriously. I think they blow. I know I'm in the minority on that one, but they have zero stage presence. I try to like them, but I just don't. And that's that. I'm done trying.

Missed Nicki Minaj, but according to my peeps on FB it sounded like a clusterfuck of epic proportions.

Can't wait for Fashion Police.

Jasmine said...

Susan- THANK YOU. I also have zero clue what the hell about Coldplay makes them the shit that everybody seems to think they are.
And speaking of Coldplay- why THE HOLY HELL did freaking Goopy herself get to introduce Adele's comeback performance?
Uh, good to know schtupping the lead singer of Coldplay and being in a few Glee eps garners you enough music cred for her to be doing this.
Die Goop, just Die.

And here is exactly what I wrote after seeing Taylor Swift lip sync ironically to her song about critics critquing her for lip syncing:

'Taylor Swift can go fuck herself with that banjo and camera angle posing'

When she gave her shocked face as she got a standing O after she performed- I wanted to kick her square in the nuts for that shit. argggggggggg

Ice Angel said...

Aww...I guess I am an idiot, but I really liked Taylor's song. I thought it was fun and cute and for some strange unexplainable reason, my kids knew ALL the words! I've never even heard the song before.

Glad they went to be before Nicki Minaj-I am not quite sure how I would have explained what that mess was. I'm Catholic and all, but not quite sure if I should be offended, because I am not even close to being sure what she was trying to say! At least Madonna's Like a Prayer brought about serious discussion and was a beautifully constructed song. I don't think what Nicki did was actually a "song" just a mess!

Hated Sir Paul's first song, but LOVED the Rock Gods set at the end. How cool was that? And how cool for all them to be playing with Paul??? I bet it was something they dreamed up growing up. I love Dave Grohl and think he is the perfect rock star!

I loved the Beach Boys reunion and give them a lot of credit as well as Glen Campbell.

Adele??? So beautiful-I could not take my eyes off of her. But I was so surprised at her speaking voice! Not at all what I expected, but just makes her all the more endearing.

Jennifer's song was beautiful-I really thought she wouldn't make it through, but she did great! And she didn't make it about her. You could tell she was singing to Whitney from all of us.

Oh...and I think I will have nightmares about Deadmau5 for years to come and am still scratching my head at WTF a Bon Iver is???

@Unknown, Alicia keys and Bonnie Raitt sang a duet in memory of Etta.
Can't remember the title, NOT At Last. They were great.

GladysKravitz said...

Oh and that "rock gods" comment reminded me: where we're the women rock gods? Was Bonnie Raitt exchanging makeup tips in the bathroom with Allison Krauss. That's all girl musicians do, you know.

I thought Adele looked AND sounded stunning last night, and am glad she did so well, although it was pretty obvious by the end of the night that she was going to make a clean sweep of it--the looks on the faces of the other Album of the Year nominees said it all!

Already made my snarky crack about Alicia Keys in the Whitney thread, but personally I'd rather have heard just Bonnie doing that song ("Sunday Kind of Love", FWIW).

Katy Perry--1985 called, and it wants its hair back! (I don't think I've seen that much crimping since maybe the early '90s!) She sang better than I expected, though, so gotta give her that.

While the Beach Boys did OK (the help they got from the younger bands helped a lot vocally), I still felt bad looking at them, esp. poor Brian. Sometimes you just want to remember people the way they used to be, not the way they look now, you know?...Glen Campbell did a good job, but it still felt eerie knowing about his diagnosis and that apparently he's already having some problems. Dead man walking, indeed...

WTF was Nikki Minaj?!? I actually called my roommate in and said "You HAVE to see this shit!" The announcer said we'd all be talking about it today, and I suppose we are, but mainly in a "WTF was THAT supposed to be?" way.

Whoever would have thought 20 years ago that it would be the drummer from Nirvana who'd still be going strong in that band? Yay for Dave & the guys! (I can also say from personal experience that Dave likes homemade blueberry muffins... ;-)

It's kind of sad when you'd rather see the guy who pees on 15-year-old girls get a Grammy than the woman-beater--I left the room and refused to watch He Who Will Not Be Named was onstage. I did notice one time that the camera caught him in the seats that he was scowling away, until he realized they were on him and immediately put on a big fake happy face. (As for the girls who Tweeted how they'd let him beat them up because he's "so hot", etc.: I may have had lousy taste in men over the years, but at least none of the guys I ever liked were abusers, damn it.)

I thought LL did a pretty good job moving things along, although I for one will never forget him doing "Mama Said Knock You Out" years ago at the Grammys. (I'll also never forget seeing deodorant stuck in his pit hair that night, but that's another story...guys, you gotta watch out for that stuff!)

Chris Brown is a fucktarded, douchenozzled assclown. I am beyond disgusted. And Rhianna (if the rumors of their hooking up are true) is not far behind him. At least she has a modicum of talent, which he is sorely lacking. Along with a lot of things, including a personality.

ADELE. That is all.

DixieTheNoble82 said...

Yay Louis! Congrats!

Lelaina Pierce said...

My favorite performance was Bruno Mars & I don't even like him. I loved Sir Paul's last set. JHud did way better than I thought she would. I loved Dave Grohl's speech ... And the irony that followed with him performing with CB.

Yay for Adele (who looked stunning) & Bon Iver!! Oh & the Rebirth Brass Band is awesome.

The worst performance was obvious Nicki Minaj. I thought it was some kind of Like a Virgin ripoff & more importantly she sounded like shit. I taped the show & was watching along with the west coasters....& perusing Twitter at the same time, so I was laughing my ass off at most of the comedians comments.

Way too much Chris Brown, who made it so painfully obvious he lip-synced to already overly auto tuned songs.
