Today's Blind Items - Escaping Your Church

This once upon a time almost B+ list female singer is now more famous for being famous. Hey, at least it keeps her wealthy. She is also known for being a devout member of this church. She recently left it though after she suffered a nervous breakdown and went on an alcohol binge that would make Arthur proud. She went to rehab and while in rehab began seeing a psychiatrist. Uh oh. She also left her church which is never a good thing. However, if you are wealthier it is easier to avoid them. They knock at her door everyday and dig through her trash, but she just hires more and more security to keep them all away and stays locked inside her house. It is a stand off. Oh, the tales she will be able to tell. But what about her kids? Her other relatives who are also in the church?

Famous Scientologist singer, hmmmmm other than Jlo I am at a loss

Feisty said...

I want to say Juliette Lewis, but I don't think she has kids. I think it's definitely COS because of the trash digging and worry about the kids and other relatives in the church.

I got nothing.

It doesn't have to be scientology though. Jehovah's Witnesses would do this too.

cheesegrater15 said...

Dammit. Google "famous scientologists". There's a list on Wikipedia.

MontanaMarriott said...

OMG, Got it, Lisa Marie Presley, mom is still one, has kids and plenty of money.

cheesegrater15 said...

Bnl, the psychiatrist part makes it $cientologist.

How about Posh spice? It doesn't mention whether she is married or not

I like the Lisa Marie guess. She put out an album a while ago. Other than being the daughter of Elvis, that is it. "now more famous for being famous"

MLE said...

Kirstie Alley or Lisa Marie.

MLE said...

^^aargh. Missed the singer part. L.M. for sure.

Doc Girl said...

Kirstie Ally? She has kids, and hasn't been seen around in a long while.

bnl1016 said...

Vicki - JW disapproves of psyciatry too. They see it as a form of manipulation.

Jamie B said...

Agree it's def Scientology. (Psychiatry being a 'no-no,' leaving the church being difficult, having wild stories to tell, etc)
My guess is Lisa Marie Presley. I haven't heard anything about her going to rehab, but she fits perfectly.

CJ said...

Another vote for Lisa Marie.

joymama said...

Lisa Marie came to mind first.

Nosey Parker said...

I'll guess Lisa Marie

Princess said...

I don't think Juliette has any kids and I sure wouldn't call Lisa Marie Presley a "singer", but that *is* what she is listed as on the wiki list.

RenoBlondee said...

Me too with Lisa Marie.

califblondy said...

If it's Lisa Marie, I'd be very afraid because those nuts are not going to be happy about losing the Elvis money.

Doc Girl said...

Ooops didn't notice the 'singer' part.

Seachica said...

Was LM ever almost B+ for being a singer? I'd call her B list as a celebrity, but can't recall an actual song she sang. Also, the blind says that being famous for being famous keeps her wealthy. LM doesn't need anything but daddy's estate to keep her wealthy, so I don't think this is her.

__-__=__ said...

Whoever it is, good luck to her. I can't imagine how hard this must be for her. It's always bad when you loose something you thought was a safety net.

spacecowboy78 said...

Yeah, I'd say Lisa Marie was always famous for being famous, never an almost B+ list singer. Almost B+ list means we'd at least be able to name at least one hit song. Don't think it's her, though CoS is prob the church for sure.

surfer said...

This sounds like Lisa Marie.

I sort of remember Lisa Marie discussing how she suffered from post partum depression after she gave birth to twins. Not long after, she moved to England, but moved back to California a while ago.

cheesegrater15 said...

bnl, I didn't know that. I still think it's $cientology because they're infamous for being anti-psychiatry, more so than JW.

NernersHuman said...

It sounds like Lisa Marie. I think her mother, stepbrother and her ex-husband are still involved in Scientology. She has four kids, two with the ex, and a set of twins with her current husband.

nunaurbiz said...

Good for her, whomever it is!!!

AKM said...

I think it's Lisa Marie, and I think the B+ list is based on name recognition, not necessarily her music career -- which, sadly, was closer to D list. Her "big" album wasn't really that bad, though. "Lights Out" is kind of a decent song.

Anywho, I'm voting LMP.

Get a Life said...

Marie Osmond

NernersHuman said...

I think Enty was just calling her a "singer" to assign something to her, since I think it's really the only thing she's actually done career-wise.

The gossip was Lisa Marie moved to London to get away from Priscilla and the church....

Cathy said...

If you recall, Paul Haggis said fairly recently that the CoS is constantly going through his trash, trying to dig up dirt on him, so I definitely think Scientology is the church, but Lisa Marie doesn't fit quite right... what about Brandy or Gloria Gaynor?

I think LMP and her current husband moved to England in the last year...so maybe to escape?

bnl1016 said...

@Vicki - Well its subjective. Depends on what you hear about. Where I'm from you hear just as much about JW as CoS.

I'm not saying its not CoS. I'm just saying that sometimes people should open their minds and explore other possibilities than to make someone fit when they really don't.

It could be Lisa Marie - but I would never call her an almost B+ singer. She was always famous from the minute she was born just for being who she was. If anything she'd be a B list celeb, D list singer. At best. (on the singing part)

Del Riser said...

Could this be La Toya or Janet Jackson, the *knock at her door everyday* thing sounds like Jehovah's Witness to me.

Frufra said...

I second the Marie Osmond guess.

kriss_t said...

What about Marie Osmond? She's Mormon (as is her whole family). Honestly have know idea if she would be recognized as B+ list or higher. The only thing that makes me doubt is the 'Uh oh' about seeing a psychiatrist - which makes me think Scientologist or JW.
I have no clue if she's ever had an 'alcohol' problem - but there's always a first for everything!

NernersHuman said...

The only think that makes me think it's NOT Marie Osmond is that I am pretty sure she is still performing with Donny who I believe is pretty devout, and also, I don't think she really has the cash to hire tons of security.

Pogue Mahone said...

I agree must be Lisa Marie and I remember reading somewhere once she was thinking of leaving Scientology after all those years....

Poppymann said...

The singer could be Brandy. The church is Scientology. I don't think the Mormons go digging through trash like CoS..

Poppymann said...

Maybe not, Brandy doesn't have kids, I don't think.

cheesegrater15 said...

I thought she did. When did she join $cientology? I remember her being church of Christ.

The International Church of Christ is also very controlling -- I wouldn't put this past them, either.

BitterBlondin said...

Liza Minnelli starred in "Arthur" if that's a clue..

Andrea said...

Just to throw out a guess for someone other then Scientology... if it it JW maybe Geri Halliwell of the Spice Girls? Spice Girls were pretty big making them B+ and now she still get attention for not really doing anything.

BitterBlondin said...

Sorry, that's right. Then I'm on board with the Lisa Marie guesses.

Also CDan hinted that Lisa Marie fell off the wagon hard and there was a blind about Priscilla not talking to Lisa because of a tell-all book Lisa was writing. I can see rehashing all the events of her childhood bringing up some painful memories causing her to seek a pysche's help

Lisa Marie Osmond

the mormon church of scientology

NernersHuman said...

Why do people rag on the Mormon church so much? Yes, there are radical offshoots and Mitt Romney, but most of the regular, everyday Mormons I've known have been very kind, family-oriented people.

blondegossip said...

Mormon teachings are homophobic & sexist. They absolutely forbid alcohol/tobacco/illicit drugs (UT has highest rate of psychotropic prescribed meds). They do not let their members go easily, either - they will send missionaries to your home and refuse to take you off their official roster.

blondegossip said...

This is a hilarious response to Mormon's PropHate & their practice of baptizing/converting people post-humously to their "one true faith."

Karmen said...

Mormon fun fact time. Surprisingly, the LDS church isn't against psychiatry more than any other mainstream religion. Sure, not everyone views it highly, but most religions will suggest prayer over prescription pills.

Utah has more people prescribed on antidepressants than any other state (last time I heard, anyway). It's mostly because there's so much pressure on the women to be the perfect housewife. With all those kids they pop out, it's no wonder they're overwhelmed.

That leads me to another interesting story. My great-uncle was a therapist in Salt Lake City. Most of his patients were these women who were tired of all of the marital pressures, so he moved to New England. His first patient was a Mormon housewife complaining of all the stress. Figures.

NernersHuman said...

I'm not saying I agree with the tenets of their religion, I'm just saying I've met some good folks who happen to be part of the Mormon faith.

Karmen said...

blondegossip - I co-sign the sexist and homophobic mentality the church promotes. It's why my sister and I left. It wasn't easy for us to resign, but I've never heard of any story where they've gone through people's trash.

Karmen said...

Nerners - You're right, there are plenty of nice and warmhearted Mormons. I just grew apart from it and I'm glad I left.

brianna said...

In what world is Mitt Rommey a radical Mormon?

Mary Anne said...

I think it's Lisa Marie Presley. She was kind of a singer a couple of years ago. Her mother, ex-husband, and daughter are Scientologists.

NernersHuman said...

I didn't say he was a radical Mormon. I said radical offshoots as in the ones that practice polygamy, and meant that Mitt Romney was a Mormon I wasn't fond of. I guess I phrased it improperly.

iheartgoss said...

Getting tired of the Mormon hate who mainly hate us because of prop 8, but know nothing else. And yes we don't like to see our members go because of our beliefs on eternal salvation not because we care about anyone's money nor would anyone go through someone else's trash. Seriously, that's weird. And why is Mitt Romney considered a negative?

WBotW said...

How is it never a good thing to leave your church? BullSHIT!

I'm thinking it's Lisa Marie because of the going through the trash thing but I've got to say that I like the Marie Osmond guess.

Lisa said...

Thank you, iheartgoss. I'm sick of it myself.

I'm not a Mormon but every one I've met has been very kind, very responsible and contribute to society. GASP. AND not every one of them supported Prop 8. Steve Young and his wife spoke openly about it and did not support it. I wish people would educate themselves before ragging something.

For my guess? Probably Lisa Marie Presley. Whoever it is, I hope they find happiness.

rachelstargirlrox said...

Krystal said...

Ugh. It's great to see religious ignorance is still alive and well. Jehovah's Witnesses absolutely do not have anything against psychiatry or any form of treatment for mental health issues.

Bnl1016 - If you're going to speak about a religion that you seem to only know about through ridiculous second-hand rumors and misinformation, please at least do some research first so that your posts are somewhat close to the truth. NO WHERE in the Jehovah's Witness religion do people believe that psychiatry is a form of manipulation. MANY JWs seek psychiatric services for mental health diseases such as depression.

I am speaking from first hand knowledge and experience. Let's try and not lump all religions together. Jehovah's Witnesses share none of the same beliefs as Scientologists.

Lauren said...

Thank you for sayin that Krystal! I was thinkin the exact same thing.

Krystal said...

Oh and JWs certainly never dig through anyone's trash. That is beyond outrageous. What would even be the point? It's a religion, not a cult! Goodness... time for a little break from CDAN I think.

erin z. said...

@iheartgoss: i dunno, because he is mitt romney?

and the "aside from prop8" argument is ridiculous. there is no "aside from prop8" mormon argument because the church funded and supported a massive movement to deny people civil rights in a country that has apparently separated church and state.

the decision to fund and push a movement to deny people equality is an indelible stain on the mormon church.

being a nice and friendly mormon doesn't change the fact that you are a person who supports a church that promotes inequality (and, subsequently, hate).

i know some "loving and friendly" people who happen to be racists and bigots. does this make their support of inequality okay? you know, because they love their families and are "good" people...

General said...

@ erin Z....I agree with everything you said!!!

NernersHuman said...

The Mormons I've known truly were good people. Not a racist or bigot amongst them. Just because you are part of a religion doesn't mean you subscribe to everything it espouses.

That being said, I still think this is Lisa Marie Presley. One, the Michael Jackson marriage debacle definitely made her higher profile, she has a singing background, has admitted to emotional and drug problems in the past, and because Enty brought up wealth more than once, and she has probably enough cash to buy and sell most of the people we have discussed.

BigMama said...

@erin Z - yeah! what she said!

Look, the fact is, if it isn't YOUR religion (assuming you belong to one) you are most likely going to have some misconceptions about it. However, I can also say that I know alot of people who don't really know what their own religion is actually about. I have a brother who is JW and has no clue about things he thinks he knows about. I have friends who are Mormon who had no clue their church was funding such a movement against a whole group of people. In general, don't get your dander up until you do a little research. Peace folks.

erin z. said...

"Just because you are part of a religion doesn't mean you subscribe to everything it espouses."

um, the anti-gay thing is a pretty massive part of being a mormon (unless you are an osmond and give loads of money to the church). maybe you would have an argument if you attend a united, but mormon and gay support doesn't really work. i don't recall too many mormons standing up and saying "hey, this is a) wrong, and b) none of our business" during the whole prop8 situation.

that's like being a catholic and using birth control and supporting the death penalty, or being a hassidic jewish woman who wears pants.

Anonymous said...

Marie Osmond. She is Mormon. The mormon's do not let anyone out of the church.

jp said...

This is Lisa Marie Presley.

She had that mysterious breakdown a year or so ago, and Enty even made an odd post about living near her and seeing a bicycle all the time and how he never saw it anymore when she moved back from England.

Good for her for leaving the Co$!

And Mormons can claim they don't do baptism by proxy, but they've violated that so many times I no longer believe them. I love the "baptize all Mormons into gays" site that a person upthread referenced.

Henriette said...

It sounds dead on like Lisa Marie Presley, especially with the mention of seeing a psychiatrist. Scientologists are dead set against that, see Tom Cruise for reference. Marie Osmond works. She does Vegas shows. What does Lisa Marie do? Pretend to be a singer? She is just wealthy due to her father, and she moved to England to get away from everyone.

Monica said...

Im saying JLo. I think her sister and parents are $cientologists too?

Priscilla said...

Of course the Mormons let you out. I speak from experience. I joined at a particularly low point in my life, and found it didn't work for me. I stopped going. They called and I said "strike me off." They sent me a letter that basically said "I resign for all of eternity" - I signed it, returned it, and they have never contacted me again. People are so bigoted about religions. Almost as much as some religions are. In fact, it seems to me hatred of religion IS a religion. Just a different church.

erin z. said...

"it seems to me hatred of religion IS religion"

exactly, just one without tax benefits, a "supreme" leader, and a set of rules that tends to apply to people being judged, not those doing the judging.

to be clear, my issue is with hypocrisy and preaching hate (generally towards minorities). oh, and a recent american survey showed that, insofar as the thousands of people surveyed are concerned, rapists are more trustworthy than atheists. probably explains the propensity for electing republican presidents.

I lived very near Utah for a long time and know plenty of lovely mormons. I absolutely do not support their beliefs though since as a gay woman, the mormon church has done everything in it's power to deny me my rights. I've had conversations with mormon missionaries who didn't have the slightest idea how to defend their own beliefs when I questioned them on issues of homosexuality and it greatly concerns me that people will go out and try and convert others without fully understanding or questioning their own belief system. but to each his own PROVIDED they don't infringe on my life and well-being (which LDS largely has...) But that doesn't negate that there are perfectly lovely people who belong to the mormon church.

Anyways, you are fully allowed to leave LDS, but if you do, you are NEVER allowed back. I have close friends who were denied entrance to their own son's wedding because they had left the church.

In any case, the LDS won't chase you down and dig through your mail. This isn't the mormon church. Definitely Co$.

General said...

Lisa Marie was a B+ singer? When? I remember her trying to become a singer, but seriously...I don't even know one of her songs. I've never even heard her sing. B+ is almost an A, which means the majority likes and has heard their music. Lisa Marie was never mainstream.

Karmen said...

amy - You ARE allowed to become a member of the Mormon again after you resign; you just have to go through the whole process of getting baptized again. Your friends were denied going to the temple wedding not solely based on the fact that they were no longer Mormon, but it's because they didn't have a temple recommendation.

In fact, no Mormon is allowed to go into the temple, unless if they have a temple recommendation. You have to go through this whole interview process to prove that you are a devout Mormon. Usually, Mormons who do have a temple recommendation have served a mission or have already been married.

Even though my mother never resigned and they still consider her a member, she couldn't go to my oldest sister's wedding, simply because she doesn't have a temple recommendation.

amy said...

@Karmen, ah, that makes sense. I didn't realize I had emphasized 'never' so hard. It makes sense that you could sort of 're-apply' for lack of a better term.

I know people don't understand this, but voting for prop 8 didn't mean gays were hated or the Mormon church was promoting inequality. I have a few friends who are gay and I love them very very much. I just believe homosexuality is wrong. Our church actually has active members who are gay, but they say they have same sex attraction, and have chosen to live a life of not acting on their feelings. Some have married members of the opposite sex and raised families. Our church does not and never has preached hate. It makes me sad to think anyone would think that. The leader of our church is Jesus Christ and he taught us to love everyone.

Also, yes members can leave and we don't harass them, contrary to what some may think. And anyone is allowed to come back, they would just have to be re-baptized.

Also, nobody is allowed to go to a marriage in our temples unless you are a member in good standing and have a temple recommend. If two Mormons got married outside the temple at one of our churches anyone is welcome to go to it, our temples are sacred and thus only those who understand their sacredness are allowed entrance, but I recommend if any of you ever live in an area where a temple is being built to listen for the open-house times and you can go walk through the temple before it's dedicated, which means it's been essentially closed to the public and only those with recommends may enter.

^ So because your friends are gay, they are denying themselves sex and love? For real? So they don't get the chance to feel sexual pleasure and have a mate because they are gay, but you do? Do you consider yourself BLESSED that you are hetero? I'm sorry, that makes me so stabby anymore to think that you feel superior to them that you're straight, so you can get married, have sex and do whatever, but they are taking the high road to not "engage in their gayness". Just ugh.

Basil said...

@iheartgoss. That same gracious table crumbs you ascribe it the exact same the the Catholic Church does....officially. It's okay to be gay, buy you had better not get yourself a boyfriend. Oh, and if you get married to some nice girl we will all be soooooo happy for you.

So I pose a question. Who wants to volunteer to be that girl? You? How about your daughters. Do you really want to marry someon who isn't completely honest and devoted to you not only mentally but physically. Good luck with that.

Of course this must be referring to Lisa Marie Presley. Anyone knowledgeable about Scientology, who also knows her history with it, can see the connection. And it's not surprising to me because many exs like myself have wondered when she was going to crack. The control they try to exert on these celebrities under is intense. Lisa's history before she bacame a solid scientologist involved drugs and alcohol and they were supposed to have 'cured her' with their unworkable program Narconon and Purification Program.

So, if this story is true and it's about Lisa Marie Presley, its a major problem for the church if the facts get out.

Keep digging and reporting. You will be helping her and so many others who are wanting to leave but don't for fear of the cult's infamous disconnection policy and harassment as you described.

Karmen said...

iheartgloss - I beg to differ. I vividly remember one Primary class (Sunday school for all you non-Mormons) in which a teacher vehemently said how wrong it was to have a gay couple raise a child, a different topic than gay marriage, but it's in the same vein.

The disgust in her voice made it clear she hated homosexuals. Not in the "I think it's wrong, but I don't hate them," mentality you have. I'd say what she did was preaching hate. Granted, not every Mormon is like her, but that mentality is not hard to find in the church. It's one of the many reasons why I left.

Yes, you can find good people in the church, but I've experienced too much bad for me to think favorably of the church itself. I could on about my dad's downright awful experiences when he served his mission and how they've turned their backs on him at the lowest point in his life, but that's for another time.

iheartgoss said...

I didn't say I think I'm better than anyone. I just think it's a sin. I sin. We all have our own battles. Again this is one of those things where you either think there's nothing wrong with being homosexual or you think it's wrong. We obviously don't all agree on it. I choose to agree to disagree, but others have chosen to be more hateful, on both sides.

As for the hate being preached, when I say our church I mean our actual teachings from scripture, not a member. I believe the church is perfect, but people aren't. I've experienced hate at church, but I believe in the gospel and choose to disregard individual member's own weaknesses.
