Anne Hathaway Has 15 Days To Lose 15 Pounds
For her role as Fantine in Les Mis, Anne Hathaway needs to lose 15 pounds. She probably only weighs a little over 100 pounds right now so it seems pretty tough to lose 15 pounds even given a month or two, but Anne only has 15 days. According to The Daily Mirror, the time frame for her to lose the weight was condensed because of the shooting schedule, so she is eating less than 500 calories a day. I don't even know if that would do it. She is also working out several hours a day, but a pound a day when you are skinny is hard. If I starved myself and did not eat for 15 days, I could lose 15 pounds. If I worked out too and did not die, I could probably lose more than 15, but I am a big guy. Anne is skinny skinny.

Wouldn't eating that little make it harder to lose it? Maybe I'm wrong but I thought your body would go into starvation mode so you'd lose muscle and the weight loss wouldn't be seen as well.

I call bs on this story. Hasn't she known for a long time that she was going to play this part? Plus, she's been cocaine skinny for a while now. Wasn't she the popular guess for the blind where Enty used Alice and Wonderland names? The White Queen or something? I don't remember much about the blind except that part of it was about a really skinny actress using a ton of coke.
the film is set around the French Revolution of 1832. People were starving. I get that it is for the role. People weren't fit & healthy back then.
But, health wise on an already thin frame, it is nuts.
Unfortunately, this is what actresses need to do in order to not be judged and bashed by the mass audience and considered poor casting. Just like Jennifer Lawrence in the HG...people unfortunately, don't know how to be open minded, once they're set on how a certain character is supposed to look like.
I don't think this is going to go over well. It's insane to make her do that.
In every possible way, I'm not a fan of Anne, but this is ridiculous.

Um, I don't want to blow the lid off any secrets of this world, but -- there is a way to lose 15 pounds in a week. It's quite common, and it's quite popular, and it's done by everyone in the industry whenever they want to lose weight. Ryan O'Neill started his daughter on the method when she was upset about being overweight. My neighbor in South Beach used to have a steady flock of models coming to his apartment to purchase the, um, weight-loss product. Judging by her appearance over the years, I imagine Ms Hathaway is highly familiar with this weight-loss method already.
Geez just make her wear some baggy clothes and be done with it. It's is disgusting how the powers to be in Hollywood are so mysogynistic. We women really need to be more vocal about this kind of BS.
It's for a role. Many actors have gained/lost weight for a role. Big fucking deal. That was point about Jennifer Lawrence yesterday. It's not forever. It's for a fucking role playing a starving person.
I agree with @Vicki. She probably refused to suck/fuck someone so this is her punishment. This amount of weight loss for her is scary, but I like that fact that Anne keeps it classy. But 500 calories a day is starvation.
If this is punishment, fuck you to the rejected troll in the suit.

A pound a day when you're skinny is a piece of cake; it's not hard, Enty. (And how would you know anyway, hmmm?) parissucksliterally is right; what's with all the high dudgeon? Christian Bale turned into a cadaver for Brad Anderson's "The Machinist"; Jared Leto got gout and worse for putting on mega-poundage for "Chapter 27." I didn't hear anyone screaming "misanthropy!" for those poor men. She'll put the weight back on in no time flat. She needs to lose it for work. BFD. Get a grip. It happens every day in Hollywood. She's a big girl; she'll live. She's getting paid enough to play a starving French girl, I'm sure.

This happens FAR more with women than men, so I stand by my point. Not too many men out there being pressured to lose weight in Hollyweird, as you so often see a schlub paired with a slender woman.
Besides given special effects and costuming you can come up with the effect you need without someone risking their health. They run this show on Broadway and in London all of the time without starving their actors to do it.
She could order some lipodrene tablets off Ebay or something. They probably work for shit though just like all the other supposed diet pills. That's right - talking about you Jillian Michaels!

Wow, disagree with those of you saying it's no big deal. I think it contributes to the cycle of negative issues surrounding all women. Women/young women/girls read magazines, see movies, are exposed to a certain ideal of 'beauty' and based on the volume of photos of seriously underweight models/actresses get misdirected into thinking this ideal should be their ideal. Then they feel like failures because they are not able to be 5'7" and 110 lbs. The camera adds 10 lbs, Anne is already way skinny.
I think it would be a great change for producers to hear that we think the actresses/actors who go to extremes for a role are not necessary for us to suspend disbelief while watching a movie.
Natalie Portman and Mila Kunis had to lose weight for Black Swan too.

I remember seeing an adaptation of A Tale of Two Cities, and was nonplussed to see a distinctly zaftig actress portraying the supposedly starving Madame Defarge. It was strange that such a robust actress would be cast in that role, and strained the "suspension of disbelief."
On the other hand, an already thin actress like Anne Hathaway can be made to appear emaciated with "movie magic," so, unless this is indeed punishment for failure to put out, it shouldn't be a problem. And if it is punishment for failure to put out, then it is a problem.

Please, lets cart out the handful of examples of men doing this to combat against one more in HUNDREDS if not thousands of women doing this.
And the biggest difference is- MEN IN POWER are making these decisions for many of these actresses. And in a male-dominated arena such as HOllywood- this DOES read as misogyny. HELLO
They should use special effects just like they did for Kristen Stewart when Bella was half-dead on the hospital bed turning into a vampire in Breaking Dawn. That was freaking scary skinny! Why can't they do the same for Anne or any other actress who needs to "look starved"?
I am not sure I believe this story. Without illegal substances, that seems near impossible.
Side note, I have to just say that I met Anne on New Years. We were both vacationing in Placencia, Belize and she is so sweet and kind. I witnessed something happen that would have made someone like January Jones spit fire but she handled it with style and grace so props to her for being sweet.
@robert--Actually, Madame Defarge was specifically described as a "stout woman". So the adaptation was actually being faithful to the book in that aspect.
Well, yes Fantine is starving but only for a portion of the film. That may be why she only has 15 days, they shot her normal body shots. On the other hand, this is absolutely ridiculous, she is VERY thin already, how is supposed to work when she's faint? ALl they need to do is put some baggier looking costume on her and it'll look like she's emaciated, especially with the right makeup. I've worked in movies and theaters and can tell this is outrageous and disgusting and not necessary.
As for Bale who lost all that weight, that was HIS choice. If he wants to be all method, that's fine.
I'm pissed and sad in light of all the horrible blinds we've been getting, on how women are treated.
Really, some baggy costumes and some expertly applied makeup should do the trick. If they can make someone look like a frickin' alien, they can make an already thin actress look even more.
I call absolute BS on this. As others have pointed out, Anne is already thin, and expert costuming and makeup can make her look thinner for the prostitution and illness scenes.
As for the casting couch rumors, I say, perhaps naively, that she didn't need one. I have heard that her audition, including her vocals, blew everyone away. People forget she is a pretty decent singer.

@Me: It's been years since I read the book, and, overall, people said this 1989 PBS version was very faithful to the book, so I'll defer to your judgement. Maybe seeing Billie Whitelaw and and Blanche Yurka as rail-thin Defarges colored my memory...but dammit, I expect my French peasants to look starved!

Even more than being told to lose 15 pounds I'm alarmed that she must lose it in 15 days. That's the part that screams 'punishment' to me. She could have been given more notice to get the pounds off and thus been able to do it at least a little more gradually and not have to cut her calorie take to such a small number. I don't know how 'easy' or 'hard' it is to lose a pound a day but I do know you're not actually supposed to lose that much per day unless you are extremely obese (in which case you will initially shed weight at a faster pace).
Personally I don't think ANY actor, male or female, should be forced to lose pounds to the point of being unhealthily underweight. I don't care if it's "just a role" - that is someone's health on the line and not only do they have to put their body through so much stress to lose the weight, I imagine it's probably physically stressful gaining it back as well. If any of us had a boss who told us to lose weight so quickly (for whatever reason or whatever job) most of us would be up in arms about it. So why in the world should we expect people on a movie screen to do the same? Just b/c they're getting paid more? The only point is to play a starving or dying character...not starve and almost die yourself while doing so. The collective Hollywood mentality is fucked up enough without us reinforcing that mentality by shrugging it off as nbd.
If it is that much of a concern to portray starving or ill characters as accurately as possible, cast a talented actor or actress who is already naturally slim (or can safely drop to a certain slim size) and then use wardrobe/makeup/CGI tricks to accomplish the look.
She is rich. She is famous. She can get another role easily. She doesn't have to take this role and do this to herself. It's her choice.
I will save my sympathy for someone who has no choice in their situation.
If, as msgirl says, they have already filmed the "normal" parts and now need to film the "starving" parts, this is still whacked. Why not film the "starving" parts first at her currently skinny skinny skinny weight and then let her eat like a normal person for two weeks and then film the "non-starving" parts?
"Go ahead and order dessert!" is much nicer than "You have 15 days until you get to eat again."
This is bullshit, whether it's done to a woman or a man. Everything doesn't have to be literal. Matt Damon had serious health problems from his rapid weight gain and loss. If it's absolutely necessary, it should be done like Tom Hanks in castaway - they stopped filming for months for him to lose the weight.
Between this and the casting couch stuff, we need a human version of the Humane Society to monitor the treatment of people on the set!
Its a good thing she did Dark Knight Rises with Christian. If she needs help losing weight, he can give her pointers.
