Family Kept Woman Locked In Closet For Six Years

I guess the very rich manage to hang on to their money because they do things like Annie George did. Annie is 39, and her husband who died last year hired a woman from India to take care of their four children. The woman was an illegal immigrant. The George family agreed to pay her $1000 a month. Instead, they paid her about half that and made her work 17 hours daily 7 days a week and kept her locked in a closet for almost six years when she was not working. A tip to the National Human Trafficking Center saw the home raided and the woman rescued. Besides facing jail time, Ms. George also owes the woman about $250,000 in back wages.

Not to sound like Andy Rooney or whatever, but doncha just hate the stories on this site involving human cruelty, misery, and suffering?

I mean, I KNOW it's up to Enty to dictate the posts, seeing how it's his blog and all, but there are terrible people virtually *everywhere.* This is a sad story, but what are we supposed to say about it? It's not even controversial -- just heartbreaking.

I'd take a D-list celebrity's latest antics over this shit anyday.

@Ida - sometimes I skip over the worst ones but I kind like seeing these stories as I might not get see them elsewhere or have a chance to comment on the ones I have seen. I like reading the comments, too.

I agree with Ms Cool.

I think it illustrates that the system is broken and needs to be fixed. When people capable of causing this much cruelty to other humans have THIS much money something is truly wrong with society. That should have been the best paid maid on earth, with paid vacations, health benefits and a retirement plan beyond something like a ROTH account.

Good people need to step up and take back society. Laws need to protect the innocent instead of the guilty. Children should be cherished and nurtured instead of abused and exploited. And other countries are not places where we get slaves. That is extremely wrong. We can do better than that, for our country and for humanity.

I say this on my very last day of work in my life. I am no longer a slave. I am a free person to do as I wish for the remainder of my life, which isn't even half over yet. Thanks for all the amusement Enty! Keep up the good work!

Ida - love your posts, understand your feelings, respect your right to express them. Carry on!

Sue Ellen Mishkey said...

Why would making a lot of money show that there is something wrong with society? We're capitalists. This looks about right.

EmEyeKay said...

@Ida, I agree with you here. When I read this stuff "maybe the world should burn" goes through my head. I remember these things, they stick with me, make me toooooo sad. I don't usually give Enty a hard time about what he's posting (because yes, it's HIS blog, if he likes the Teen Moms so much then I have to just deal with it) but -

Enty - whaddaya say? There's enough to be depressed about these days. I come here for fun, to laugh, to poke fun at celebs, and to figure out blinds, 'cuz I love a good puzzle.

Wouldn't be surprised at all if the GOP called this an attack on job creators.

haha to @Patty, yeah, I think early March is just slow for everything. I know the phone's sure not ringing in our office, guess the celeb aren't up to their usual highjinks either!

@__-__=__, CONGRATS!

MISCH said...

How can you do this to another human being ?
Mrs George should be locked in a cell for 6 years...

nolachickee said...

@MISCH - not just any old cell, but solitary confinement. Annie needs to know what torture feels like.

Murphy Brown 2020 said...

Holy shit@__-__=__. That's AWESOME. Congrats!

@Vicki -- I totally agree.

__-__=__ said...

Thanks EmEyeKay!

This world has enough for everyone's needs, not for everyone's greed.

Anyone who has enough money for an estate like this should have enough money to pay their maid more than $250 a week. I wouldn't clean my own room for $250 a week.

What happened to the people who donated to create hospitals and libraries? Why are they instead funding scabs like Paris, Greasy Bear and other worthless POS who do nothing for humanity. What happened??

And thanks Ida!

Well, at least the closets in that place must be big.

Oh, I agree with you. I just don't think there is a viable alternative to capitalism at this point, so I try not to bash it too much.

And I blame the internet in part for what happened. It's the race to the end of civilization, imo.

This is heart breaking. Stories like this make me sooooo angry. I want to punch this woman out. breaking the law by hiring an illegal is bad enough...but worse, she's guilty of this sick human cruelty. Why are there so many screwed up people on this earth? I hope this rich bitch burns.

First _- _=_ - CONGRATS! I hope you enjoy everyday here on after!

@Vicki (and this btw is a slight joke) I wouldn't call this couple job creators, since they only hired one woman to torture on that estate. (Believe it or not, not all GOP walk with aspirin between their legs, carry a bible or are against gay marriage. :))

I think the cool thing here is someone SAW (or heard) this happening and reported it!

I was bolstered to hear that there are still people who care about others welfare- and to me, that's the message to take away from stories like these~

As for Enty posting non-celeb stories or not, eh. Personally, I'm not just interested in celeb gossip, and I think human-interest stories like these are WAYYYY cooler to read than Zac Efron dropping a condom at the Lorax premiere or LiLo talking about being part of the Oscars in 5 yrs....I first came to CDAN (and stayed) because I liked that it wasnt just a Perez-style gossip blog. Let it be more well-rounded than that. And eff D-list celebrity news. seriously

Congratulations _-_=_!!!

__-__=__ said...

Thanks Ms Cool! And Moxy!

I'm not necessarily bashing capitalism. I am certainly bashing pure capitalism that is nothing but greed. There was a day when the money making capitalists gave back and recognized that their vast fortunes could never have been made without the participation of many. If you make money off a product, someone has to buy it. If you make money off an idea, someone has to use it.

You can't get money for nothing from nobody. We're all a part of the big picture. We're not here to make all the Bernie Madoff's of the world rich. No society can do that. That is just too much greed and any society will collapse.

The good people and normal people have to take action and make things change. Those are not the people in that house enslaving someone too poor to fend for themself and only trying to have a better life.

lzahart said...

@__-__=__ double congrats!

@Vicky you are cracking me up lately w your comments. @bits of moxie i get it but still its funny!

@SEM no of course there is nothing wrong with making a lot of money in a capitalist society but I think part of the point __-__=__ was making was about wealth disparity. It is possible to have a capitalist economy and not have such massive wealth disparity that things like this are becoming not uncommon(countries like Sweden have capitalist-- and healthy-- economies for example, and don't have such massive wealth imbalances). There was a case of this happening here (Boston) recently-- in a densely populated neighborhood, where a very wealthy couple were literally keeping housekeepers as their slaves-- not paying them, keeping them locked up, etc-- one of them literally escaped. I don't think Ms. George would be able to get away with this behavior in a society where there was not a massive inbalance in the distribution of wealth or a tolerance for this being the status quo. I think the reason Ms. George or the Brookline people think they can get away with this is there is such a huge chasm btwn them and most everyone else that they believe they are above rules and acceptable standards of society and how to treat people that normal people follow. So the problem is not capitalism-- it's unbridled capitalism and its side effects.

Here's hoping Ms. George has the opportunity to learn more about the labor laws/abolition of slavery in our country... from a very small cell where she will be for a very long time.

I agree. A hundred percent.

@_-_=_ (hope I did that right) I understand how you feel - unfortunately this kind of crap has been going on since the beginning of time. It does seem since the advent of the internet that more of this is being uncovered - that's a good thing - and hopefully more and more of the "haves" will turn the bad guys in to the law.

Personally, I don't have a problem with capitalists who make their own money and spend it on whatever they want - what I DO have a problem with is the "trust fund babies" who have no idea what it is to earn a living. The post either yesterday or today (I forget when) about a rock star who didn't give money to his kid who had to pass the hat at a concert, that's the kind of parenting the rich need to be doing. When you don't earn your own money, you don't appreciate it.

@_-_=_, I totally agree with your points. I also like to read the human interest stories.
I second Sherry on asking Rita back. I like the different voices on this blog. Rita, I posted something where someone followed up, didn't even bother checking my name, and swore at me for my opinion. I ignored the troll and have kept posting, troll has gone.
RQ, hope you get back to us soon and let us know how everything went.

I'd like a follow up on these a-holes to see what happens to them. God bless this poor woman.

And, congrats, @ _ - _ = _

Sorry I can't remember who posted it, but someone wrote that while they couldn't give away the details because it's RQ's news, both RQ and baby were doing well.

Put the f*ckers in prison and give the woman the house and all their money. $250,000? Not enough to make up for this kind of inhumanity. I'm in a zero tolerance mood today. Better yet, sell them into slavery so they know what it feels like to be dehumanized.

Sounds like any of the maids in Singapore where I lived for a two year period and was appalled by the conditions and how people felt it was absolutely fine (locals and expats).

Congrats @ _-_=_!

Rita- if you're reading, I miss seeing you around here as well.

RQ - Congrats & hope you and the family are well.

I just don't get why this is such a huge news story. This is the way almost all illegal immigrants are treated. I guess it's because the family is so freaking rich, they could've afforded to pay her a decent wage, unlike the farmers.
