American Idol Judges Use Their Save

I have watched American Idol this season once or twice and it just so happens that one of the times I watched it was earlier this week. I did not know Jessica Sanchez was the be all and end all of the show and that everyone thought she was supposed to win because when I watched the show the other night I thought she deserved the low votes she apparently got. She would have been kicked off but the judges used their safety. Look, they can use their safety but if the voters don't like her it won't do any good because she will just be right back there next week. I understand why they have this safety thing but what does it matter? Jennifer Hudson got voted off when she probably shouldn't have but how has it affected her career? Exactly. So, who cares if you get voted off. It just allows you to start recording your record before everyone else.

I do not watch the show, but I have seen clips on the morning news. This girl's voice is UNBELIEVABLE. She sang Whitney Houston songs, and brought tears to my eyes, it was so beautiful. I do not blame them for saving her at all.

like you both said, you don't watch the show much. The judges have been forcing her down America's throat. her voice IS great, but her performances are far from perfect. they're stiff, she has no personality, and her song choices are bad. America doesn't want somebody that is just going to stand behind a microphone and sing. they won't pay high concert ticket prices, buy an album, or apparently vote for them.

The problem is she has no personality and while her voice is good, she has no character

I've been hit and miss on this season, but did watch it this week. This group are actually all very talented and Jessica's voice is beautiful for sure. I think she just doesn't quite connect with voters because she is so quiet and shy. It makes her seem off putting even if she really isn't. Anyway, that's my theory and I'm stickin' to it! :)

Sean, some people want a singer, not a "performer". I would pay crazy money to see Fiona Apple or Adele in concert, but you could not pay ME to see Katy Perry or Rhianna.

I see your point about her being shoved down your throat, but I have a point too.

I watch the show and the audience was right. She just doesn't have "it". She most likely will be gone soon.

I only watch at my best friend's house with her husband b/c we drink when ST says 'I love you', when Fraud says 'baby' & when RJ says 'dude', 'man', or any variation of.

That being said.... I have no valid opinion on this persons ability or this show. Ha.

I've watched the entire season, and though I do agree she has a beautiful voice, with lots of control and discipline, she has been shoved down our throats - and I resent it. I was nearing on offended about how Randy went off about her last night - essentially saying she should win.

I don't think she's that marketable. All she seems to be able to sing are the big ballady songs. Give her something more upbeat and she can't do it very well. There is no diversity. She says she has worked hard ALL her life. ALL those 16 years...wow... the wisdom she must be able to impart on us all ;)

I like many types of music and personally, would not buy her album. Phil, Elise, or Colton...maybe even Josh - I would buy their stuff in a second!

She may win American Idol - I hope she doesn't, but at the very least that likely gave her a wakeup call.

Come on you guys, quit hatin on BeBe Chez.

j/k, I think she is a great singer but agree that she is being shoved down our throats and I was really irritated by the judges reaction last night. How dare we have opinions that differ from theirs!

Personally, I love Philip and dont understand all the negative feedback he has been receiving lately.

I think she has a beautiful voice, but she's only 15. You all have to remember, she's a baby. She's very shy and sweet. Carrie Underwood had zero stage presence when she won American Idol and now look at her. With the right guidance she can be the whole package, IMO. Some blossom later than others. I think she deserves to be there and with the right training she's going to be fantastic one day.

mikey said...

Kelli is correct - Carrie listed and became a great performer. I this Jessica is a little young, but she is really talented. Not a lot of ballad singers around these days and maybe it's time for another one.

The judges annoy me with their favoritism, but I don't vote. It's really difficult to say the winner is really the best - there have been some winners that have disappeared quickly.

we watch the show faithfully every week. last night we had some people over to watch it. friends of my kids and their parents. we like all the kids, and think they are talented. everyone has their favs. but the WAY they handled the save; wow. steven saying they WOULD use their save when all we knew was the bottom 3? jlo going up on stage before jessica had finished 30 seconds? randy saying jessica was one of the best singers in the country?

everyone at my house was a bit shocked. america can't "get it wrong" because its voted on. the judges have been so insulting, and have pushed jessica down the throats of the audience so much that i don't think she can win now.

probably does not matter long term, they will have the careers they deserve. but the judges are kind of spoiling the show with thweir insistance that jessica be the winner.

if the judges want something other than popular vote, they need to start a different show. and lets face it, it america only bought records based on talent; brit-brit would not be a rich woman.

I think she's just whatever, but I read this week that she has already recorded a few songs that were available on iTunes for the past few years, so she's been out there and tried and now people everywhere are more familiar with her and they still don't care for her. Give it a rest and go back to school.

kriss_t said...

@Me -- that was the other thing...talk about unfair! She didn't have to 'sing for her life' like everyone else did...she started off, and it wasn't so great. Probably not worth the save if they went based on that. So why do it?
With Steven saying that they would use the save that night - wow. Kind of made me wonder if they would have really used it for Elise?? Would they have all agreed on that? Irks me that the judges show such obvious favortism.
I have quite a big bee in my bonnet today about last nights AI.

Sean said...

that's what The Voice is built around, not Idol. the best singer rarely wins, and if she can only sing ballads and loses her breath when she moves around stage it means she isn't a very good singer but a good vocalist. that's the description of a background singer.

Sean said...

exactly. how would ppl have reacted if Phil said "I've been working all my life too, and my life's been longer than your's"?

I hadn't watched anything this season until last week. Jessica's performance of "How will I know" gave  me chills and I saw some of the raw talent and "it" factor that Whitney Houston had. This week, however, her performance came across way to show-offy and strident, in my opinion. I hated the song. I see potential in her but it's really going to depend upon the material she chooses and the connection she can make w the audience.

Jessica is pretty irrelevent in this story- It was the judges acting like friggin' jackasses all season! I think a lot of this weeks voting had to do with people being pissed at how nasty they were to that Holly girl, who really sang very well, and their criticism of Phillip and how they REALLY want him to change; They want to "slick" him up and that isn't going to happen.
Jlo acts like she's a damn musical genius and everyone should abide by her opinion. Randy, too- and it's pretty obvious who the producers want to have continue. I'm pretty sure the goal of the show is SUPPOSED to be who America "likes", and little Jessica might be a decent singer, but she's not at all likeable. She'll go home in the next two weeks- the judges behavior last night pretty much sealed her fate.

Sean said...

2 people go home next week because of the save, so she'll just go home next week. They didn't do her any favors, if anything even less people will vote for her regardless of how she does.

Del Riser said...

I watch. Jessica is good technically. Big voice, great range, but if America doesn't want her they won't vote. Let's face it Jimmy had it right, the teen girls vote for the cute boys.

My faves are Elise and Phillip, Josh gets a little carried away with his runs and frankly I don't like to watch him sing. Phillip gets into his songs like Bruce Springsteen did. Sometimes I think he's going to pop a vein.

Elise can sing anything and I love her duets with Phillip.

Randy was reminding the audience that it is about the*best* singer, but sadly the show is called Idol, and Idols are not always the ones with the most talent. We all like different types of music so a technically great voice is not truly the basis for our liking how our music is presented to us.

It was good to see James Durbin last night, I liked him when he was on the show. A young man overcoming a lot for his music.

feraltart said...

Last year the judges stopped someone and saved them before they sang, so it isn't a first. I personally was shocked at the bottom 3 and felt Holly should have gone.
I also love Philip and think the criticism has been off, but he has handled it beautifully. Glad to see so many songwriters/musicians on Idol.
Loved James and wanted him to win when he was on. Great that he is doing rock, will now have to buy the album.

It was so funny when she was like everyone is gonna be shocked when the see BB Chez (ala Sasha Fierce) and it was the same ole boring stand around and sing. It was comparable to a grade school talent show performance wise. Not voice-wise mind you, she sings great, but is in no way ready for the Big League. Thats where shows like the Voice & X factor have the right idea to develop the package.

@Sean -
I'm about 60% sure that only one person is going home next week on account of how Jermaine Jones was asked to leave earlier in the season. Don't hold me to that though!

I'm rooting for Hollie because she has a solid powerful voice and because I like short blondes. She needs better mentoring though.

MaryBeeCee said...

Jessica was on America's Got Talent in 2009 so she already had quite a bit of exposure before Idol.

kriss_t said...

@Del Riser - I love love love Elise & Philip's duets! I liked both of them, but especially the Stevie Nicks /Tom Petty one. It was so great!

@feraltart - I felt like Holly should have gone last night, and was surprised she wasn't in the bottom 3 (though I was pretty pleased to see Jessica there). I think with Philip they're just trying to get him to push himself a bit more. The old "Tear 'em down to build 'em back up" tactic, maybe? He took the critisism very well though! I'm looking forward to seeing what he does next week. I know he'll knock their socks off!

If you read TMZ yesterday... they had a piece in the afternoon that said producers believe the one that is to win the whole thing was going to get voted off and they were trying to persuade the judges to use a save on her. It didn't name her, but most people assumed it was this girl.
That's just too phony, and scam-like to me. Someone was going to go home and the producers basically said no, you can't do that.

auntliddy said...

I have been watching all season, and agree Holly shld go. Too young. Jessica has beautiful voice, but no charisma. I totally dont get what the judges see in phillip phillips at all. Elise looks sloppy and sings sloppy sometimes. I wld cut her gair pronto. Josh a complete natural, but doesnt hv the looks people are looking for. Think of it this way: the save is over, america rules now,lol

It was sooooo disrespectful to the other contestants the way the judges fawned all over Jessica. They were basically saying game over Jessica wins. Hello. I was once a Jessica fan but she doesn't show any originality. She just copies the songs and doesn't change anything up.
I like Elise more and more and Skyler too.

Del Riser said...

@kriss t, Elise and Phillip could put out a cd of duets and I'd buy it.

I thought the week with Stevie on was great, she loved both of them.

I didn't mention Skyler, she will do well in country music if she wins or not. Great energy on stage.

I thought the judges were disrespectful to the other contestants. JLo sort of made it
a moment about her when she took the mike away.

I think Holly should have gone this week. Excellent voice and range but too worried about being
spot on to give feeling to the lyrics she sings. Maybe she's just too young to know how the lyrics should be sung.

Bleu said...

I've watched all season and she makes even current songs sound old-timey. It wasn't an accident she got the lowest vote count.

Lelaina Pierce said...

I've watched all season and thought the results were BS. The bottom three were the best singers, IMO.

The little blonde girl should have probably been the next to go.

I'm rooting for Elise. I love her voice; it's very unique. Plus, she's a SC/NJ girl like me.

califblondy said...

Since day one, I've thought Jessica had the diva vibe going on. I know she's young but hey, some start early. From the body language of the others it doesn't seem like she's very popular in the group. I'm not really crazy about any of them and I get sick of the constant yelling (now I sound like the Mum). They can't go for the big Whitney or Christina notes every single song. While I don't think she'll win, my fave is little Reba.

Sherry said...

I saw her from her performance of America's Got Talent and she was actually better then. She was also quite young. Could there be something more here than meets the eye? Maybe someone on the inside is pulling some strings? It would be interesting to see her family has some connections somewhere. That would 'splain the save.

Scallywag said...

Jessica is yet another reason they should not have under-18s on Idol. She's got talent for sure, but she's not seasoned. Her voice it too big for her, she doesn't know what to do with it. Whatever the low-end age is, parents will be pushing their kids out when another couple years would prepare them artistically and emotionally for this ride.

JLo drives me nuts. I remember when she told Haley that singing "You and I" was putting her in danger because not enough people would know it. Sure thing. Maybe she should have sung Waiting for Tonight, right? This is the last wench in the world to counsel any singer.

I like Joshua and this week he reminded me of Raphael Saadiq. Does Phil channel Dave Matthews too much? Maybe, I like him though. I think they are desperate for a girl to win and have anointed Jessica.

The Adventures of... said...

The Judges saving Jessica was the best moment on the ep, imo. So funny! JLo getting up and interrupting the performance with 'sit your ass down!' made me lol :D The kid has a lovely voice, clear talent. Meanwhile, America's voting on cornfed cornbread Holly and her stiff as performance? Please.
