Mia Amber Davis' Husband Sues Over Her Death
Last May, Mia Amber Davis suddenly died after knee surgery due to a blood clot. Now, her husband is suing her doctors because he says they should not have prescribed her birth control pills and they were the cause of the clot that led to her death. He says the doctors should have known that she was too obese for the pill. One of the best parts of Road Trip is Mia. It always amazes me when people die after something as simple as knee surgery and just shows you that you need to live every day to the fullest and never take anything for granted.

I was not aware that weight had a whole lot to do with BC pills and blood clots and stroke. It's if you smoke and/or are over 35 years old that they warn you that you are at higher risk. I have used the pill for over 20 years and I smoked the whole time until I quit 4 years ago. I'm also not a slim person. I knew the warnings and my doctor did too. I really think it's just a crap shoot with side affects and meds.
I am so sorry for her husband and family, but don't think this holds up. Surgery can always cause a blot clot in anyone.
I thought blood clots were a well known possible side effect of bc pills? This doesn't really seem sue-worthy, but...I don't know.
Maybe there's more to the story, medically speaking. Or maybe it's a money grab/way to make sense of a young person's death.
I personally think the pill is handed out a little too carelessly - there are more side effects than one is lead to believe. It screwed me up for years. Wish I would have known more about non-hormonal birth control.
I have a dear friend who had a stroke at 25 from the pill - and this was AFTER she had a blot clot a few years prior! And her doc put her on the pill knowing about the prior clot!
While doctors can be leery of putting very fat women on the Pill, plenty of them do it anyway if otherwise the woman is healthy. It's possible that was the cause, but it's also quite possible that it was something else that triggered the blood clot. I suspect Frufra is onto something re: trying to come to terms with someone young and apparently healthy dying so suddenly; the assumption (esp. on the part of the grieving family) tends to be that something must have gone wrong for this to happen, and the doctors should have foreseen it...but sometimes people just drop dead, even young, reasonably healthy ones. I have always been in the 220-280 range and been on the pill due to endometriosis. I never had any problems and I made sure to keep all my follow up appts. I turn 35 this year and I haven't been on the pill for few years but that's a personal choice
She looks Midwest average. I would call her large, but not obese. Medically, perhaps, she fits that term, but she really just looks average.
It's terrible someone so young died, but people don't seem to realize that doctors are not God and they don't give guarantee's.
Sad, but enough with the lawsuits. There will likely be no $$$ for this.
Blood clots happen for a number of reasons, my grandmother died in knee surgery from one 25 years ago. I'm pretty sure she wasn't on the pill. Blood clots have happened on occasion to otherwise healthy women on birth control, hence the warnings. it's not exactly likely though. Just possible.
The same thing happened to my cousin. She went into the hospital for knee surgery and took a turn for the worse and died in a matter of days.
I had knee surgery - and the orthopedic surgeon did not take me off the pill before hand - less than a week after surgery I had clots, and one eventually went to my lung causing a pulmonary emboli. People die from this. I thankfully survived, but only because they took me to surgery immediately and put in a Greenfield filter - to stop clots from going to my heart. All this happened when I was 20. So sorry to see/hear this woman died because of a doctor's stupidity. Hopefully her husband wins!
I have always gone to Planned Parenthood, and they wouldn't give me the Pill because I was 40 and had high cholesterol. I have never been overweight in my life, it is just genetic.
I chose the non hormonal IUD instead. Maybe her Dr's told her about the risk, and she decided to take it anyway, thinking it was minimal?
Either way, very sad story.
My mother died from a blood clot in January.

Knee surgeries are notorious for blood clots, primarily because such a large muscle group is fairly inactive for an extended period of time.
All the news outlets are picking up on the word "obesity," but that likely had nothing to do with her death, and the lawsuit lists a number of other valid medical reasons that she should not have had the surgery. I'm sick of this stupid war on obesity. Obesity is sometimes a side effect, but is not the cause of the health problems facing our country! It's basic "correlation vs. causation" logic. So much ignorance from people who should know better.
Agree about the grieving process, but she was not healthy. She had let herself go. If she doesn't bother to take care of herself, why should the doctors. I know that sounds harsh, but I always assume
no one is looking out for me but me and you have to take yourself seriously if you want others to.
I discovered I had a blood clot two years ago, right before I was going in for major surgery, I had fibroids that were so large they were pressing down on a major artery and caused a clot in my leg. Blood clots are extremely dangerous, having surgery with a blood clot is even more dangerous. I couldn't postpone the surgery, had a filter put in on Monday, surgery on Thursday, and the screen removed the following Monday. I had to see 7 different doctors before this was decided on. I was also on a medication that caused the fibroids to grow.
This woman does not look obese to me. However, every medication has risks. I think the husband is just looking for a cash settlement.
