Well, James Cameron must think that all of us are going to love the sequels to Avatar so much that he is filming the next three installments all at once beginning in the fall. His bff Sigourney Weaver confirmed it to Showbiz411 and said that shooting begins in the fall and she has no idea how long it will take or what order they will be making them and she will just show up and when James says it's finished she will go home.

I had better start saving up my money to not see those.
I waited to watch it on cable...it was a technical wonder but in the end I found it to be really really just really long. Three more? I don't know about that.
Blah. Zero interest in the first one, obviously less than zero interest in the sequels.
I believe my kids said it was kind of like Poccahantas (sp??).
He's not only a dick but as hack as well. I swear, this Avatar shit is like the live action edition of that cartoon Fern Gully from when I was a kid.
I never saw the first one, don't plan to see it, won't see any of the sequels, and yet somehow I still consider my life to be worthwhile.
I was opposed to the whole premise of the movie -- that the humans were all evil and didn't care about anyone or anything else, and that the blue dudes were endowed with angelic qualities and were so much more evolved than us. At least, that's how I understood it. Yeah, thanks, I'll pass.
@Texshan, that's how I felt about it, too. I saw it reluctantly and then they just kind of lost me when the human military members were 100% evil. It's shoddy story-telling to make those characters completely one-dimensional. Cameron could have written it so that viewers disagreed with the "bad guys" but still empathized with them. It wouldn't have changed the moral of the story, but it could have been relatable.

@Texhsan - ditto. Watched about 1/2 hour of the 1st one, won't waste my time on the others. I also prefer my movies that shine with interesting stories, not special effects.
I'm with those of you who didn't see the first one and won't see any of the others and amazingly I still have a life.
Like @Patty said, it was a mashup of several disney/kids movies (Pocahontas being the main one).
The whole theme was rather contrived and dated, but the special effects and camera work were insane. It really made up for the story. They basically created all new 3D stereoscopic cameras for the movie as well as new facial recognition and capture software. For me and my fellow nerds, it's really how the other guys will use the same tech in future movies, Avengers being a recent one (3D DSLR and 3D Stereoscopic). In a nutshell, it's really giving human qualities to things and characters that could never have been achieved before on camera -- They can finally make Voltron, Master Chief, Solid Snake, He-Man, Hungry Hungry Hippos...etc. Hell, maybe they'll redo Transformers!

I got up and left the first one when I heard the word 'unobtanium.' Lame. I felt bad because I was with a friend and her son but it turns out they were both suffering too. What an evo to think people will want to see three more rip offs of Pocahontas. One, not for me, but for everyone else, why not? Three? Narcissist.
Bet there will be a few prequels or flashbacks with Sigourney... like how mankind became so ignorant and self destructive, a lot of posturing and sanctimonious preaching, making very overt metaphors between what we have going right now. Metaphorical, like unobtanium. About that deep and creative.

I became incredibly nauseated in the first movie. And bored. The plot for the first movie was Pocahontas so I think well see Beauty and the Beat, the Little Mermaid and probably The Lion King in the sequels.
I've got the DVD at home, I put it on when I am having trouble sleeping, within 15 minutes I am gone...
I was talked into going to the theatre to see it 3D. I did not want to see it at all. While it wasn't the best movie in the world, I was pleasantly surprised. It wasn't *that* bad. Gorgeous 3D for sure.

Plus I can't get past the JC dick factor.
I think JC knows the sequel won't do so well at the box office, so he's making the next two so the studio won't pull the plug. That's the kind of crazy-smart he is.

The movie was visually stunning, but he is the worst writer in the world.I am sure the next 3 installments will be a snooze like the first one. He has great ideas for stories, but needs to leave the dialogue to someone else.
I waited a long time to see Avatar, until it came out on DVD and I rented it. I had heard so much hype about it I knew I would hate it. I was surprised, I quite enjoyed it. I won't go line up and see but I might rent a disc. It's fantasy and I think either you are a fan of the genre or you're not.
It does seem a bit of a cluster fuck here. "I hate James Cameron, I hate Avatar. Never watched it though."

Renoblondee, there's more than enough info out there about the problems with the story that I think you can hate it without having seen it.
If I were bankrolling this, I wouldn't have paid for more than one at a time. Especially after the massive failures we've seen lately of huge-budget movies. I think there's been enough backlash against the film that people may not be as enthused about the sequel. Also, it was somewhat ground-breaking, and by the time the sequels come out, everyone is going to be even more sick of 3-D, and special effects flicks that don't have a quality story to back them up.
On the other hand, maybe the simultaneous shooting will bring the costs down. They are pretty much guaranteed to do 9 figures, but if your movie costs $200 million to make and takes in $150, you're screwed.

I rented it and thought it was just...ok. At best. Someone told me if I wasn't seeing it in 3D it wasn't worth it. The storyline did remind me a bit of other movies, esp. Pocahontas.
