Jimi Hendrix Movie Has No Jimi Hendrix Music

For the past couple of months, Andre 3000 has been filming a Jimi Hendrix biopic. It sounds like a good idea and I think a movie about Jimi's life would be a great thing. I even think Andre can pull it off. That being said, it would be nice to have a Jimi Hendrix movie that actually has Jimi Hendrix music in it. This movie will have no original Jimi works in it at all. None. There will be covers of songs from groups around at the time, but it seems kind of dumb to make a movie without acquiring the rights, but the family of Jimi hates this producer so they said no. They have continued to say no. They liked another producer who was going to give them a bunch of money but that producer could not get a movie made. For his part, the producer says the movie is not about the music, but about the life. Huh? That makes no sense. That is something you say to the studio and hope they don't ask too many questions and just write a bunch of checks.

This is completely off topic, but I have 7 Hope Solo's staring at me when I open the page. It's creeping me out.

Ahhh. Yet another shining example of the wisdom of Hollywood suits. A Jimi film with no Jimi music. Yes, suits, I so see your logic. Actually, not, you fucktards.

It would have been cool to hear Andre 3000 belt out Jimi songs. What a waste.

Or Blohan's Liz Taylor on Lifetime.

That reminds me of a show I saw around the time that Amy Winehouse died. I watched because I wanted to see if I actually recognized any of her songs, but the hour-long show didn't include any of her music!

Bet they will be scratching their heads when nobody turns up to see the movie. Sheesh!

Greedy relatives doing themselves out of a payday. Gotta love that!

The movie might still be good, but it won't be great.

It's gonna be all Monkees music.

@rejectedcarebear 1st thing I thought of! Why not just make a "Jimi Endrix" type biopic. Love that 30 rock, 5 steps ahead.

Oups, Jimi Hendrix, I know that, sacrilege!

@Ingrid Superstar It could be worse than Monkees music, which I actually enjoy. Thanks MuchMusic reruns of the 80s!

The Hendrixes are a weird family. All sorts of odd copyright lawsuits among family members using his likeness for profit.

Any Jimi Hendrix movie without his music seems pointless. Kinda sad too, since Andre 3000 looks like a good fit for this.

I LOVE the monkees!!! Jimi opened for them on their US tour.

Considering I've heard every Jimi Hendrix song 8 bazillion times, this would maybe make me think about seeing it.

I loved when she "auditioned" for Jack and he watched it because he was delighted by the trainwreck. "What's that flying metal bird in the sky?" "They had planes then, Jenna."

Can I just say that one of my favourite Things That Dudes Do, is when "Crosstown Traffic" comes on the radio, and they sing along - to the guitar part. Falsetto and everything. EVERY guy I know does it, and I find it kind of charming.

Jimi's family have been a pain in the ass for years. They have made it really difficult for various efforts to honor his memory in Seattle.

Hey Joe and All Along the Watchtower were cover versions, so they can use those. Ditto Rock Me Baby, Wild Thing and Like a Rolling Stone, all of which were standards in his live shows. They can probably pull it off.

Jackie Jorpjomp come to life.

His dad has all the rights now, I think, but only after lengthy legal battles.

Purple Haze is arguably the best known mondegreen, it'll be weird to have a Jimi film without that song.

ITA its a waste to not have Andree 3000 do any original JH songs. I do very much like him.

@Maja, my husband used to work with a woman named Debbie who wore a different track suit every day. He and his co-workers used to sing "Track suit Debbie" to the tune of "Crosstown Traffic" whenever they saw her. Don't know why I'm sharing but I am :)

There was a recent movie about Jimi. Made in the last 5 years. Tv movie and pretty good. Problem with hollywood is they make everything bigger than it is. they take away the intimacy. which is what jimmy was all about. i love him. even dylan said that his version of "all along the watchtower" was superior to his. dylan copies hendrix's version of his own song. if you wanna hear something great you should hear stevie ray vaughn play little wing (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5wotUs41HTY) and vooddoo chile ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OEJh2FFUUoU.)
jimmi was a great guy. and we wanted to go to blues towards the end of his life. i heard that clapton was going to give him a left handed guitar for his birthday before he died.i also heard he wanted to join santana and santana said "no way". the guy was a genious and a sweetheart (my aunt smoked up with him) and to make a movie about him without his music is close to criminal in my opinion. He was a God of the guitar and humble. A movie about him without his music is a huge disservice. Sorry for the long post. I'm a little toasted, a big Jimmy fan and under 35 years age (to give hope to others that there is a young generation that knows music).I love jimmy. sorry. PS. i can't preview my comment and my son took come of my keys so sorry for the errors.

I thought that the people in charge of the estate were Jimi's dad and his stepmother's daughter (no blood kin) Janie, and that Janie can be, um...is avaricious a good word to use here? I don't have any problem w/Mr. Hendrix making money, but as for the rest of the family, have they actually considered earning their own way instead of sponging off someone who's been dead for 40 years? Oh, yeah, that would involve actually having to work, wouldn't it...

LOL @anita_mark...that's all I'm gonna be able to think about when I hear that song now.

A Hendrix movie without Hendrix music...yeah that will work. Music rights isnt that something that the producers should get figured out before they start shooting?

Jimi's dad died a while back. Sadly, the remaining relatives are still leeching and besmirching his memory.

Around 2003 a director buddy of mine was offered a TV miniseries about the life of Michael Jackson. Not sanctioned by the Jacksons so no Jackson music. Naturally he said no.

@Maja: My favorite part about "Crosstown Traffic" is Mitch Mitchell's bass drum pedal. Unreal!
@Abaddon: That Stevie Ray Vaughn cover of Little Wing has to be heard to be believed! Magna-feek!
