River Phoenix's Last Film Gets Release Date - Kind Of

Earlier this year I had a post about how the director of River Phoenix's final movie Dark Blood was finally working on the post-production and hoped to screen it soon. Well, it is going to screen for the first time on September 27 at a Dutch film festival. The film, which was shot in 1993 was about 80 percent complete when River passed away. Since River was the lead, it was just left sitting until January of this year when the director started working on it again.

In the movie, River plays a guy who lives in the desert after his wife dies and River's character kind of goes crazy when a couple vacations near where he is staying in the desert. If the film is received well at the film festival, I'm hoping it would get some kind of release or at least get some kind of DVD release. I would love to see it.

River! I miss you.

Please release this on DVD! I have never had closure for my beloved River. I won't even care if it's crap. I would watch it.

And yes Johnny D. I blame you and those damn drugs. And Oprah bc she hasn't been blamed for anything today.

Oprah? What is she doing there?
I had a huge poster of him in my bedroom even if I was not allowed to watch My Own Private Idaho ... boy he was cute.

I'll watch it.

One of my favourite movies, that was (I think) the last one of his that was released, is "The Thing Called Love", where he, Samantha Mathis and Sandra Bullock play aspiring country singers in Nashville.

In fact, I might go home and watch it tonight!

I love you dia!

I miss River, he probably would have been one of the best actors along with Heath Ledgar.

Drugs are bad kids! Mmmmmk.

I just had a moment of silence for my River.

On a side note, I just saw a promo for Stand By Me and realized, Who would've thought out of that cast that Corey Feldman would be the one to survive to adulthood and Jerry O'Connell would end up with the supermodel?

You as well! It's a cold Seattle Thursday right before we get hit with 80+.

I was smart not to move somewhere hot. Yesterday was 78 and felt juuuust right.

Loved that movie! "I'm getting my own...big bar hair". That movie never gets enough love. Sandra Bullock was so likeable in it. And River was magnetic. Dude moved me up the Kinsey scale for sure.

Grabbed A Day in the Life of Jimmy Reardon off Netflix a few months back. Cute movie. He would have been been great.

Maja, that is an amazing movie, one of my fav's too. "I'm here and I ain't never leaving!" It is that show along that I fell in love with Dermont, in addition to River. I am dying to go to the Bluebird cafe.

(starts scanning travel websites....)

It's such a shame that he died so young. :( He had more talent in his pinkie than most of the actors today. It makes you wonder what movies we'd have & how different others would have been if he'd done them.

He was supposed to have Christian Slater's role in Interview With the Vampire. After his death Christian took it over. To his credit he donated his paycheck to charity. He said he didn't feel right keeping the money.

How in the hell did this cherub and Joquine come from the same DNA?

Long lost River Phoenix! I can get behind that. I loved him as an actor and was heartbroken when he OD'ed. Maybe it's just because I was at the perfect age to swoon over movie stars back then, but I feel the same way about River Phoenix that most people feel about James Dean. I think that if he'd done more mainstream movies than independents, he'd be idolized posthumously the same way.

I am glad that Joaquin has had acting success though, even if he's taken a sharp turn towards the eccentric in recent years. Joaquin was amazing in Walk the Line. I suppose it's fair to realize that none of the kids in that family exactly had a normal upbringing, though. They came to Hollywood pre-messed up. No wonder they all have a dark side.

It needs to go to theaters for all of us Gen x'rs that loved him and felt destroyed by his sudden, horrifying death. Closure. It would be like having that last chance to say goodbye. I want it on the bug screen so it feels special. Seeing it on DVD will be like watching one of his movies that I just never saw before. This possibility makes me smile for the first time today.
