A Great New York City Halloween Story - Courtesy Of Emma Watson

This little blurb comes from a reader in New York City. Despite all that has gone on in new York this week there were still kids who wanted to go trick or treating and to wear their costumes. One five year old boy wore his costume and probably won't have any idea of what happened to him until he gets much older.

I will let the reader tell the story.

I wanted to tell you a nice celeb story about what happened to me last night while I was trick or treating with my kids and some friends of theirs.

One of the kids in the group, a five year old boy, was dressed up as Harry Potter, complete with matted hair, glasses, wand, etc.  We were walking on East 78th Street which is a popular Halloween spot for NYC kids since all the town houses and apartments on the blocks between Park and 3rd Avenue go all out decorating for the holiday and load them up with candy.

Anyway amid the madness, the boy was walking along the street when a young woman came up to him and said, "Excuse me, are you Harry Potter?"  After he mumbled out a yes, she said, "That's great, because I'm Hermonie Granger and we're best of friends" and she gave him a big hug.

Of course the boy was too young to realize that it was indeed Emma Watson, who couldn't have been nicer.

I am really enjoying this, FSP :)

@Dee, I totally did!

@Dee - I definitely did! LOL And that was very sweet of Emma. I hope she remains one of the good ones.

Awesome!! Nice to see some actresses are not so full of themselves that they can connect with the "common people" Love to Emma for this:)

That's a very sweet story.

Awwww...I love her. I remember reading that her parents wouldn't let her touch her Harry Potter money until she was 18, and they set up a meeting with her and financial advisors so that she could learn how to manage it. So much better than the parents like White Oprah.

goheels83 said...

I have always liked her! Thanks for the nice story, Enty!

She seems like a good egg who knows how to take the vinegar out of herself. Good for her. She, along with Daniel and Rupert, seem to be transitioning out of the child actor mode quite well.

Anonymous said...

I'm officially in love with her now.

love this story!!

Whether or not they are good actors i have ALWAYS though that Daniel, Rupert & Emma were thoroughly nice kids who hit the acting gig jackpot.

Awwww, this melts my cold cold heart.

So seeing as how this is a sweet story for the day, and I'm actually up early enough to catch the rest of you, I feel the need to write this website and its commenters a love note.

I don't tend to comment much, and I always manage to visit late enough that I miss all the action, but I come here every day. I've been reading religiously for almost a year, and I have to tell you all what a remarkable group we have here. I've spent a lot of time at other sites, and the commenters tear down and insult each other with such vitriol. Here, commenters disagree and debate respectfully. Instead of rudeness, stupidity, and viciousness, you support, tease, and love each other. The concern and kindness on the Hurricane Sandy post is just the most recent example. People sincerely offered to open their homes to others who might be in danger, whom they have most likely never met! Would you see something like that on Yahoo, Jezebel, or Youtube? It's incredible!

A bit of my own story so you can understand where I'm coming from. I injured my back almost two years ago, and it has prevented me from working and being able to do much outside the house, so I spend a lot of time online. My husband is amazing and supportive, but he works 14 hours a day, so I tend to feel rather isolated. It's helped me immensely to find such a reliable, wonderful group of people who really do feel like friends. You have all built such a great community here, and the dynamic is such that trolls &c. don't tend to stick around long, and kind, supportive people become regulars. I love that you can share some of your worst stories and darkest pain, muse on philosophy, politics, religion, ethics, and then snark on what actors wear to award shows all in the same place. You laugh, cry, tease, snark, and essentially enjoy each other's company. It's really remarkable and unique, and I feel really appreciative that you let me join your wonderful community. And I have to give Enty props for his hilarious, thought-provoking writing and what he has done to encourage this outstanding place. I've just really felt compelled the past couple of days to tell you all what you've grown to mean to me. Thanks for giving me a great place to hang out with you all.

TL;DR, basically you guys are awesome.

@Dagny: You made me tear up! What a great sentiment to start a busy Friday.

And Emma Watson is very very sweet to have made that little boy's Halloween.

Dee- I certainly did!

Oh, this gives me the warm fuzzies!

@Dagny...welcome! I've been reading here for about 6 months and I'm totally addicted. I am currently disabled and spend a lot of time online, too. This really is a great group of people here. =)

Dagny makes me want to be a better man, er commenter.

Thanks Dagny, welcome!

And Dee--I've never seen nor read any Harry Potter (*ducks*), but I totally read her words in my go-to 'little British girl' voice. I think I got mine from Mary Poppins.

@libby,
If you don't have the time to read the books you can always do the audiobooks. My husband loves the books and has reread and listened to them over 20 times each book (it's a problem). Get the audio books with Jim Dale, he's won awards for his work and he does all the voices differently. It's awesome. JK Rowling is the CS Lewis of our time.

Amber said...

@Dagny - hopefully you can comment more! Your note was really thoughtful. Glad you've been here with us :)

Sarah said...

How sweet! I will say, Harry Potter is one of the cuter costumes I saw on Halloween, that and this two year old little chub waddling around in a dinosaur suit with the tail wagging as he went.

a non a miss said...

Welcome Dagny! Stick around :)

Yndy said...

This story plus Dagny's comment just started my Friday off brilliantly.

I was always hoping Emma was the earnest, sincere young woman she appeared to be, rather than the picture painted by some tabloids and gossip sites. Even if it weren't a true story? It is now for me. Too bad there was no camera to catch the moment! :)

A great kindness story after a brutal week. Thank you Enty for sharing!

Welcome Dagny, and thanks for sharing your story with us! We need more like you around here! So comment away!!!

Happy Friday dia! & Frufra who said Happy Friday on another thread!! :)

Snapdragon said...

Aw, Dagny! Lovely to make your acquaintance!

This story made me tear up a little. Love it!

EGB said...

Lovely story, and Dee I totally heard that in my head! She continues to be a favorite of mine. And Libby, if you ever decide to do a potter movie fest (it's fun to watch a couple at a time), grab some kids, watching them enjoy the magic is the best part!
Welcome, Dagny! Even if I don't check until after work, I make time every day to check in my CDAN world. I routinely feel privileged to be a small part of such a cool group of posters.

tara17 said...

That is all kinds of adorable, Emma Watson is so cool. Great story, thanks.

Frufra said...

Hi Dagny! We have so much fun here, and gosh-darn it, some real love, too! Glad you're here :-). This is my only and favorite daily blog - CDANers are tops in my book <3.

Sarah said...

Dagny- is that your name, or are you an Ayn Rand fan? Just curious, that name will always bring up Dagny Taggert for me after reading Atlas Shrugged.

smash said...

Hey Dagny- I really love your name and wish I ha done it :) have a fabulous Friday! I really enjoy this group of people and it is so much fun to have more people join in who are awesome!

artemis said...

Hi Dagny! I agree with you wholeheartedly. This place is great and the commenters are fantastic. I find the trolls hilarious because they try really, really hard to rip shit up and it's just embarrassing sometimes. lol

There is that one dude named Enty who is a weirdo, but otherwise it's a fun place.

;)

Kloie said...

Yay Emma! She is awesome.

Miz said...

I agree with Dagny too, this place is a great place to lose yourself for a few hours. The genuine feel of family (where you snark all day long but would cut a bitch if anyone was in trouble) is lovely when most of my family is so far away. I particularly love that you either point blank ignore trolls or beat them at their own game (case in point armpit gate ;p).

Viva la CDaNers!

Miz said...

Oh, and Emma is adorbz :) what a lovely gesture!

Derek X said...

Just when I think I can't love her anymore than I already do...

JSierra said...

I love her. Took me a while because I was consumed in a jealous rage that she got to be Hermoine Granger and I didn't. And by consumed I mean the greater part of my teen years.

But now I want to be her best friend. Me, Emma, and Jennifer Lawerence are a trifecta made in heaven, I can just feel it.

JSierra said...

@Libby For shame!! Harry Potter was and still is the highlight of my life. We should all have a cross country HP viewing and comment on here to discuss the films.

Anonymous said...

Thank you, everyone, for your wonderful responses! You're definitely proving my point. Maybe this love-fest will start everyone's weekend off on the right foot? I just request that no one breaks out into mushy songs. I hate mushy songs.

@Capt Willard No, sorry. I must not be who you're thinking of. =)

@Sarah It is a pseudonym, and Atlas Shrugged was the inspiration. It's one of my two favorite books and I've read it 12 times. (I am not, however, the reader in the dating profile post.) I consider myself an Objectivist, and Husband and I have already agreed that if we have a daughter, we'll name her Dagny. The character is a personal hero of ours, plus it's such a lovely name--unique without being too crazy.

mell61 said...

@christina, sorry I love the audio books but no-one can beat Stephen Fry in the UK version, wonderful voice for the HP books... actually re-listening to Deathly Hallows at the moment!
As for the kids from HP, I heard a lot about the more established HP actors offering them mentoring, assistance over the years, so I really think that it took a company of actors to raise level headed child actors!

Now you know why.

The girl is an overdose of awesome.

Great work Emma, & I also read it in a posh English voice.

@mell61,
No problem. He's my gay husband anyway (he just doesn't know it yet). I just know i wouldn't be able to get past it being him. I joke with my husband that I should buy a really nice vintage watch and just find him and propose.

Yaaaaaaay!!!!!

@Dagny - you rock! On Harry Potter - I read the books to my son when he was little, doing all the accents (which I may add, I'm pretty good at!) So naturally when I read this to my husband, I used Hermione's accent. Easy, I grew up in England!

Anonymous said...

Awww Dagny, I got a a little misty eyed too. That's so sweet and I feel exactly the same way. It's one of the reasons that I keep coming back as much as possible. Everyone's so supportive of each other and genuinely good people. Sniff sniff I love you CDAN family!
