Fiona Apple Postpones Tour Because Of Her Dying Dog

Fiona Apple posted the letter above on her website yesterday and said that she is postponing her South American concert tour because her 14 year old pit bull is dying. The dog suffers from Addison's Disease and Fiona does not want to be the type of person who puts her career ahead of love and friendship so her fans will just have to wait. I think this would have all gone unnoticed probably by everyone except her most loyal fans if not for everything in the news about Fiona in the past few months.

I went home early from a free vacation when my dog got sick and had to be put down. I didn't make it home in time to say goodbye but I don't regret leaving early.

Sorry Fiona :( that's such an adorable pit

I saw this yesterday. Fiona considers Janet her family. I accidentally caught my dog in the eye with his leash and it swelled up and I cried about it for 2 days because he CRIED when it happened. If he died I'd be a disaster. For someone like Fiona who is very inside her own head and isolated, the idea of not being there for your "child" is out of the question.

It seemed that all of the people (South Americans included) that commented on her FB post were supportive. As many as I read, anyway.

Awwww! :( Poor Fiona and her doggie. Losing my 15 yr old kitty last January & 7 yr old doggie in March were 2 of the worst days of my life.

Micehelly said...

Animals are not family members - they are pets, something you own. It is people with this mindset that are destroying the world by spending more time and money and energy on animals than they do on people. How many kids died yesterday and this crap is supposed to be meaningful? Things like this that make me sick. Spend some time doing something that matters rather than sitting around pretending animals are people and pretending their lives have any meaning beyond the small number of years they are companions. There is always another one to be had.

Frufra :-).

When I was in a huge fight with my boyfriend, I accidentally slammed the front door on my dog when she was only a puppy, ohhhhhh myyyyyy godddddd I felt so bad, thankfully she's okay, no damage was done. I think people grieve so hard for their pets, because they are a companion who does nothing but love you, and thinks you're the best person in the whole world, no Matter how you treat it... There's that saying "be the person your dog thinks you are" somebody is just a doucheasaurus-Rex, and obviously wasn't allowed to have pets as a child or something

Micehelly said...

He/She is not wrong. People in this country spend more time and money on things like so-called animal abuse and too little on taking care of the humans who are trying to survive and who have something to contribute to the world.

Micehelly said...

**companion who does nothing but love you, and thinks you're the best person in the whole world**

Animals don't think and animals don't love.

This is the exact kind of attitude that pisses me off. Don't assign human characteristics to animals - it is stupid and tells exactly what a lonely and immature person you are. Look around at the suffering humans and take care of them.

I had two old cats that I had to put down a couple of years ago. They brought me much joy and calm during our lives together. We now have two cats that we dearly love.

Last year, instead of going out for Valentine's Day, my guy and I decided to spend the money on a 10 foot cat tree and we don't regret it for one moment!!

I am a PROUD animal guardian (NOT owner) and my life is better for it.

I have two cats and just put down our 15-year-old cat last year when he developed internal bleeding from medication he needed after I stepped on him. I didn't take to my bed, I didn't cancel work, I didn't have him cremated and put on my mantle. I cried for a while, I thought I heard him around the house for a couple of days, I got another cat so our kitten would have someone to play with and because I like watching them interact.

I have had more than 15 cats in my life. I am not cold, I am realistic and truthful. I know the difference between humans and animals and I think anyone over the age of five who attributes human emotions and actions to animals is foolish and emotionally stunted. I can't say it enough - animals are not people.

kelgela2 said...

I would rather spend my time with animals than humans. At least animals are more honest and fun to be with.

My mom is not an animal person, but she allowed my brother to buy 2 lovebirds for my grandmother. She comes home everyday straight to the birds to talk to them. We are all going to cry if something happens to them.

Micehelly said...

**There is plenty of love in this world for animals AND people. **

My point is that that love should be different. Animals shouldn't be treated the same as people. Animals are temporary - when you get a cat or dog you know they only live so long and acting as if their absence is the same as the absence of a human who contributes something to the world is foolish. They are for entertainment and companionship as long as they live, then you get a new one - or not. Some people like animals around all the time and some don't. I couldn't imagine my life without mine, but I have perspective on their position in the world and I will always get a new one when one is getting older or dies.

ms snarky said...

@Someone, clearly you've never had a pet. Or a heart. Or a soul.

My dog will go with other people when I have to be away, but she lives for the time when I'm home again. No delectable treat in the world can get her away from me. Also, consider the dogs who stand guard by their dead owners' gravesites, not willing to leave the person you say they don't 'love.'

Love really is everywhere, if only you have eyes to see it. I'm very sorry you've never had a dog to love, or experienced the absolute (mostly) non-judgmental love and loyalty a dog or cat gives to you. It sounds lonely and sad for you.

Micehelly said...

**animals are more honest**

Animals are not honest. They are just animals. They live on instinct and training. Honesty and dishonesty are human characteristics, they require thought and decision-making. Animals are capable of neither one.

Micehelly said...

**Also, consider the dogs who stand guard by their dead owners' gravesites, not willing to leave the person you say they don't 'love.' **

These stories are not true, they are sensational articles written to sell newspapers. Don't be so gullible.

ms snarky said...

@Someone -
I see that you posted that you do have a pet, and that you replace them as soon as they're too old or difficult to care for. Very nice. While it's true that pets are shorter-lived than humans normally, that's not a reason to not give them the loyalty that they are willing to show to you.

Good for Fiona that she chose to stand by her pet and not leave him to die alone.

msgirl said...

I read that she found the dog tied up at a park and she rescued it. Special bond from day one. I think anyone who has loved a pet is cheering for her, and I'm not going to waste my breath on Someone.

Micehelly said...

** you replace them as soon as they're too old or difficult to care for. **

I didn't say that. When our 15-year-old was 14 we got a kitten because we knew Sam wouldn't live much longer and we knew our child would miss him. We thought getting a kitten and having a pet overlap would ease her sense of loss. Sam was 5 years older than our daughter, so he had always been part of her life. About six months after We had to put him down, we got Pocket because Angie was used to having a playmate and we love cats.

We took Sam to the vet and had him put down when I came home and found him in a puddle of his own blood and stone cold, barely breathing. I held him for the hour until my husband came home so we could take him to have him relieved of the misery he was in. I listened to him meow and groan in my arms for that hour. I held my husband and daughter while they cried while we waited for the doctor to come back with the injection.

When we took our new kitten for his shots and to be fixed and they put him in the same room where we put Sam to sleep, my husband and I both choked up.

Yeah, I am pretty frigging cold and heartless like that.

**you are not realistic, you are STUPID. Haven't you ever heard of DARWIN? Jesus Christ. Feel free to go on and on about how animals don't possess the ability of emotional expression, but just know that you sound like an uneducated dolt.**

WTF does Darwin have to do with animals thinking and feeling emotion? I read plenty and I am not going to list my job and degree because you wouldn't understand it anyway. I have enough education to know what is real and what is not. Animals respond to what they need by instinct, and respond to what they want by conditioning.

**Scientists are discovering, on a relatively frequent basis, that animals have empathy, compassion, feelings. **

Yeah, again, don't be so gullible. These so-called discoveries are papers written by people who are paid by PETA and animal activists who want this to be true. They know there are plenty of gullible people who think their animals are human who will eat this stuff up, thus allowing them to get MORE MONEY for more BS "experiments."

Grow up and learn something. There is a whole world of education out there waiting for you.

Oh, okay.

Yeah, my pen has empathy and compassion too. It expresses it by sitting on my desk and being green. If it were angry, it would be blue.

Seriously, I am a scientist and I did an experiment that proves it.

Now give me money.

@Someone - IMO it's cold and heartless to be so callous toward people whose backgrounds you don't know. Some of us may be unable to conceive children, or unable to afford to have children. Some of us may have outlived our families and significant others. Some of us may have therapy pets for various mental health issues. The bond that some of us may have with our pets may go beyond entertainment and cuteness. I understand the points that you're making, but request that you understand things are not always so pragmatic.

Micehelly said...

Personally, I think you are all foolish for arguing something unknowable. Would you argue the same over someone's belief about an afterlife? Nobody can really see into an animals mind, therefore there is no practicable, measureable way of knowing anything about animal thought process. Just as there is no way of proving or disproving an afterlife or lack of one.

Micehelly said...

** you spend a lot of time trying to deny pets their place**

No, I don't deny them their place. Everything I have said is nothing but reinforcing what their place is. Are you setting a place at your Thanksgiving table for your pet?

I don't care if people can or cannot conceive children, etc. That doesn't make your pet the same as a human. It is still just an animal that is there to fill a need and has much less worth than a human. Evolution has a reason that some people cannot conceive children, deal with it. Animals are still just animals. No amount of rationalization can change that.

Come into the real world and stop having fantasies that your imagined "love" from your animals is the same as human love. Maybe see a therapist about that.

Micehelly said...

**Dogs know fear**

No, they don't. Fear is a human emotion based on knowledge of the past and anticipation of the future. Animals don't have either.

Someone: I understand what you're trying to say in terms of keeping things in perspective; you've just been a bit abrasive in how you've phrased it. I'm quite aware that animals aren't people, and while I love my 16-year-old cat dearly and will be devastated when she's gone (which hopefully won't be for a while yet), I'd be even more devastated if I lost a beloved human. I just don't think that it has to be so black/white, either/or--love is love, after all, so we can love both our animals and humans, and shouldn't need to play the whole "you have to love X more than Y" game. (Frankly, animals can be much more lovable than a lot of humans out there, and while it's true that, as my great-great grandfather Douglas used to say "Love goes where it's sent, even up a pig's ass", all too often the pig's company would be far preferable to that of the humans in question.) Also, while we may love a number of humans, the degree and shading of that particular love differs depending on its object, and I don't see why the same wouldn't apply to animals; frankly, there are a lot of animals in the world that I'd miss much more than some of the humans who frequently appear as fodder on this blog.

I also have to argue the point about animals operating purely by instinct and nothing else--yes, instinct is obviously a big part of what makes them tick, and presumably they're not capable of serious abstract thought, but based on my own experience and that of many others, I do believe that animals are smarter than we give them credit for, and understand things a great deal more than we realize. (Tibetan Buddhists supposedly believe that cats can read minds; cats and dogs both can certainly, at the least, read the moods of their human caretakers and act accordingly, and most parrots are at least as intelligent as the average 5-year-old human child.) Yes, I call Jezebel my "baby", although I'm quite aware she's not a human child; still, I'm responsible for her in much the same way legally, and also emotionally--she needs me to take care of her, and I've chosen to take on that responsibility. Yes, I'd grieve a great deal more over losing an actual human child than I would for any of my pets, but that doesn't mean I can't or shouldn't mourn my furballs when they die; they may be animals and not people, but their lives still hold value to me, and I act accordingly.

Micehelly said...

**since we can't agree, how about if you crawl back into your dark, heartless, loveless cave, and let the rest of us enjoy our lives, our love, and our pets? That would be great. Thanks. **

Can't do that. There are too many facilitators out there who think like you all. I have to speak truth and hope that even one person out there will recognize what a freak she is and start acting normally instead of acting as if animals are human.

Jane Goodall's research gives us a good indication that animals actually do have emotions. "Strong emotion underpins social behavior and connection."

I don't usually get involved in these types of discussions but I guess I'm about to "feed the troll."
@Someone-- you keep comparing animals to humans and act as though it's a mutually exclusive condition-- you either love animals or love humans. I'm a veterinarian, an animal lover and I have a lot of "kids" in my home (both 2-legged ones and 4). And while I would NEVER compare the loss of a pet to the death of a human family member I don't think it makes a person weak or bad if they mourn the loss of a loved one (even if they have 4 legs). No one on here (that I have read) have compared the death of an animal to the death of a human... If I lost my (human) child I would never get over that loss... But you better believe that when they day comes that I lose any of my 4-legged kids that I will be devastated. It may not be the kind of loss that you never move past, but it's still a loss none-the-less. These are living, breathing creatures and they are not just "replaceable" in your life and heart.
You obviously need to do some research because the things you say about animals are absolutely idiotic (they don't show fear?!?). Get a doctorate degree in animal behavior and then we will talk in a civilized manner. But that would mean you would have to move past saying that they are "just" animals and are completely disposable.

Kudos Fiona... Putting a family member ahead of money, that shows true love

I once read something by Irving Townsend that I will pass along to all of you that are losing/have lost beloved animals (and seems to go well with Fiona's letter)...

"We who chose to surround ourselves with lives even more temporary than our own live within a fragile circle, easily and often breached. Unable to accept its awful gaps, we still would live no other way. We cherish memory as the only certain immortality, never fully understanding the necessary plan. The life of an [a]nimal seems endless until one day. That day has come and gone for me, and I am once again within a somewhat smaller circle..."

Hugs to you all (and to all of your babies, furry and otherwise) you make my circle larger on a daily basis. I hope you have the happiest and most thankful of Thanksgivings.

I picture Someone as a disgruntled sheep who is clacking away on the keyboard. Like an actual sheep.

When I come across these trolls, I no longer get angry. I believe they're lonely and hugely dissatisphied w/ their lives and more importantly...themselves. They're to be pitied.

Someone is trolling. Trolling about something that has no impact on her whatsoever. Certainly not like anyone is forcing her to treat her pets a certain way. But gawd forbid anyone have a different opinion.

I suspect this control freak has a miserable life and this is her only outlet. Sad, actually.

Excellent method of mischaracterizing half the population in America. I don't know what "Someone"'s basis for their rationale is but your post is incredibly offensive and inappropriate. Anyone who has ever had the pleasure of sharing their life with a dog knows that "Someone" has never had that kind of experience. Perhaps we can be compassionate to "Someone" because they lack that experience. Mindless jabs because of political affiliation are a waste of time. Btw many people characterize themselves as Republicans because they believe all human life has value aka that whole pro-life movement. How you bastardize that position to your comment is beyond me.

Lola, Ms Snarky, Lioness, I'm so very sorry for what you're going through/have gone through. I had to put my other furbaby down last year after thw little guy had a grand mal seizure. I still cry. Hardest thing ive ever done in my life. He was always there for me during difficult times. Sometimes i felt he kept me from jumping off a bridge. I mean he had one eye and a chronic limp and although i thought he was beautiful i just knew no one could love him as much as i did. The

The same happened to my dog :/ i couldn't look him in the face until he was healed. I'm a huge wimp though lol

Oops sent too soon. Meant to add that i can't believe I'm going through it again. But as hard as it is i would take in another furbaby in a heartbeat. And intend to do so.

"I think anyone over the age of five who attributes human emotions and actions to animals is foolish and emotionally stunted."

I believe the same of you, for exactly the opposite reason.

I'm truly sorry that connecting with an animal in that way is beneath/beyond you. You're missing out on something more valuable than you apparently realize.

I was just thinking about what a difficult time Fiona Apple has had, with early sexual abuse, with great difficulties trusting people.

That would certainly be a large part of her special attachment. Especially to a dog...they are very loyal - they don't hold grudges, or judge you....

Biologically speaking, animals are very very very similar to humans. Biblically speaking, the description of "soul" for humans in Genesis is repeated when God breathes life into animals as well. So again, there's not a lot of basis for saying their lives do not matter. Biologically and spiritually, we are equal. Humans are simply more intelligent, and able to think in complicated, abstract ways that most animals cannot. That may make us more "important" and dominant in the world, but measuring intelligence is not a good way to measure worth.

So I have reverence for life, and sadness for death and loss.

I changed my blogger profile pic to me and my pit bull Abby.. My ex and I rescued her, and even though we have been broken up 2 years I can see Abby anytime I want and dogsit her 1 day a week (pit bulls aren't allowed at my apartment complex). I don't know what I would do if I lost her...probably have to take bereavement leave... Bravo Fiona

You're right, animals are not people, they're so much better than people. It's because of people like you our world is in such an awful state.

Animals are something you own? You're a disgusting troll. I bet you are just awful in real life.

fascinating note section, re. "someone". someone spoke sensibly in the wrong place :) this is fiona and janets post.

i grieved my first four lost pets. i grieved my grandmother. i grieved my brother and my best friend. life is full of loss, i hope i have the fullness of heart one day to grieve a dear pet, again.

i couldnt miss a day of work for the cat that saved me (my sweet sphynx kitty died last year, one morning after he told me he didnt feel well, politely, but i was too busy to understand: the other cat knew) and i couldnt miss a day of work when my brother died, either. so life is hard. i am glad fiona and janet have another day together, but someone is sensible and held her husband and child when they grieved one pet. "someone", you are good to give people a place to vent their frustrations here!

@jessie dont be so rude about sheep!

I had to put down my 14 year old cat almost 3 years ago. 14 years....my longest relationship! I still miss him every day.

Hi brilliant, Many of us do help children, the elderly, and at risk groups. I have worked in public service since 1991. I had a carnival for Muscular Dystrophy when I was very young. I've been volunteering since I was 14 in a hospital pediatric chronic care ward, established a library for a literacy organization, and worked on a hotline for a local AIDS/HIV project. I'm certain others here have similar stories. And yes I was with my terminally ill cat when he was put down last summer. Jackasses like you live to criticize others, but can't back up their BS. Put up or shut up.

Someone sounds like they might have serial killer tendencies. Stepped on your cat? Yeah, I'm sure that was an accident...
