Assault Rifle Sales Soar

Everyone thinks assault rifles will be banned or harder to obtain over the upcoming months or year so after the Sandy Hook shootings there has actually been bigger sales than ever for assault rifles. People who don't even probably want one are out buying them. People who have never bought a gun are out buying them. What are they going to do with them? The NY Daily News has a piece today that is a first person account of a man who bought an assault rifle the day after the shootings. He lives in NY and it took him 5 minutes and cost him just under $1000 to get the last one in the store. You can read just how easy it is to buy one, right here.

That reporter went to a store that is 10 minutes from my house. The area I'm in is considered as safe as any NYC suburb, with robberies being the main crime. We have had maybe two shootings in the past 40 years (and y'all have heard of them both).

Knowing that the residents in my community were out stocking up on these after what's happened makes me nauseous. What are people thinking? For what reason does a stockbroker or pediatrician in the suburbs need an automatic weapon?

These are freaking awesome and will disappear at the office Christmas party.

Cranberry Cream Cheese Bites

1 c flour
3/4 c oats
1/3 c firmly packed brown sugar
1 1/2 sticks butter, softened
2 c cranberry sauce (I used homemade - if you use canned, get regular and not jellied)
1 8 oz pkg cream cheese, softened
1 14oz can condensed milk
1/2 c lemon juice
1 T brown sugar
2 T cornstarch

Preheat oven to 350. Generously butter a baking dish (I used a brownie pan).

In large bowl, combine oats, flour, 3/4 c brown sugar, and butter. Mix until crumbly. Remove 1 c of mixture and set aside. Press remainder firmly into bottom of greased pan. Bake for 15 min, then remove and cool for 10 minutes.

In small bowl, combine 1 T brown sugar and 2 T cornstarch. Stir in cranberry sauce and stir to coat completely.

In a mixing bowl, beat cream cheese until fluffly. Gradually beat in condensed milk until smooth, then slow stir in lemon juice.

Spread cream cheese layer evenly on cooled crust; spoon cranberry mixture on top of cream cheese layer, then top with remaining 1 c mixture.

Bake 25 minutes or until golden. Cool and cut into bars or bites. Store covered in the fridge.

This is a dumb post. There are no assault rifles being sold. These are assault "type" rifles. This is an error by lazy journalists. These rifles look similar to them in style but are not at all the same gun. They fire the same way as a pistol, in other words you have to pull the trigger each time you want to fire. A real assault rifle is AUTOMOMATIC, meaning you depress the trigger and hold it and it keeps firing, like a machine gun. They are not the same thing. How can we have an intelligent discussion on anything when we can't even get the basics right?

Seaward : Lazy person's chocolate croissants: Crescent Rolls. Melt chocolate chips. Fill those triangles with melted chocolate, throw some slivered almonds over the chocolate if you want. Roll them up, brush with a yolk, 375, 11-13 min. Then....eat them all. Great idea:)

Love the recipe idea! This one isn't fancy, but as a single gal with a sweet tooth living on her own, it BLEW MY MIND when I came across it on Pinterest:

3-2-1 Cake Mix
Combine 1 box of Angel food cake mix with 1 box of ANY other cake mix. Any time you want a single serve dessert, combine 3 tablespoons of mix with 2 tablespoons of water in a mug and microwave for 1 minute.

Butterscotch Cookies

Take the Nestle's Tollhouse Chocolate Chip Cookie recipe and substitute butterscotch chips for chocolate chips AND shortening for butter.

I make these every year and people LOVE them. I don't even get it. An old co-worker actually believed me for a minute when I told her the secret ingredient was cocaine.

The secret is the shortening. Also, I don't use an electric mixer (one time I did and they got too mixed and didn't taste right).

Yummm all these sound so good!

Here's my favorite mac & cheese:

-1 1/4C dry elbow macaroni
-12oz shredded cheese, whatever kind you like
-1 (12oz) can evaporated milk
-2 eggs, well beaten
-1/2C butter, melted

Preheat oven to 350. (I put the stick of butter in a 13x9 dish & melt it as the oven preheats.)
Cook & drain the macaroni, place into baking dish. Add evaporated milk (& butter if it's not in there yet).
Mix in the eggs.
Add the cheese, mix well.
Bake 30-40 minutes, till the top is bubbly.

Here is something super easy I get asked to bring all the time--

Caramel pie

Buy or make one graham cracker crust.
Boil two large cans of sweetened condensed milk in cans for four hours. Make sure water is 3/4 way up cans or they may blow.
Pour into pie crust and top with whipped cream. Serve with sliced Granny Smith apples.
No one ever believes how simple--
Have taken to many pot lucks and always a hit.

To be honest, Sandy Hook really has a Bedford Falls from "It's a Wonderful Life" feel. Everyone knows everyone.

Since my kids are already on winter break (seriously Mentor Public Schools, a 2 1/2 week vacation?!?), we're doing this on our own and with our church's Sunday School classes.

Here is proof that ANYONE can make bread LOL. So easy to do and so great with butter or butter and strawberry jelly. Seriously you just mix everything in a bowl and if you use rapid rise yeast you only have to let it rise once.

Here's my contribution to the recipe swap. My fave for cold winter evenings!

Spicy Garlic Toss for Noodles (from "How It All Vegan" by Tanya Barnard & Sarah Kramer)

4-6 cloves garlic, minced or crushed
2 tbsp olive oil
1/4 cup water
2 tsp Bragg's Liquid Aminos OR Soy Sauce
1/2 tsp paprika
1/4 tsp dried basil
1/4 tsp dried thyme
1/4 tsp dried pepper
1/4 tsp salt
dash of cayenne pepper

In a small saucepan, saute garlic in 1 tablespoon of oil on medium-low heat until garlic is translucent. Be careful not to burn. Add the water, remaining oil, Braggs (or soy sauce), paprika, basil, thyme, pepper, salt, and cayenne and bring to a boil. Simmer for 8-15 minutes. Toss with soba or buckwheat noodles. Serve the noodles with steamed veggies and tofu or eat noodles on their own, right out of the pot, for that bachelor look. Makes 2-4 servings.

1 large package (16 to 20 ounces) frozen chopped spinach, thawed and squeezed dry
2 (8 ounces) packages cream cheese, cut in cubes
3/4 cup chopped green onions
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder

1/4 teaspoon paprika
2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
1 can (8 ounces) water chestnuts, drained, chopped
assorted crackers, chips, or vegetable dippers
Preparation:

In slow cooker, combine spinach and cream cheese. Add green onions, garlic powder, pepper, and paprika. Cover and cook for 2 hours, stirring once or twice, until very hot. Reserve 1/4 cup of shredded cheese for topping. Stir in the remaininng cheese and chopped water chestnuts. Sprinkle reserved cheese over top. Serve with chips, crackers, or vegetables for dipping.

You guys are awesome :D Here's my recipe contribution, Slow Cooker Chicken Tortilla Soup, so good and super easy.

Slow Cooker Tortilla Soup

1 pound shredded, cooked chicken
1 (15 ounce) can whole peeled tomatoes, mashed
1 (10 ounce) can taco sauce
1 medium onion, chopped
1 (4 ounce) can chopped green chile
peppers
2 cloves garlic, minced
2 cups water
1 (14.5 ounce) can chicken broth
1 teaspoon cumin
1 teaspoon chili powder
1 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon black pepper
1 bay leaf
1 (10 ounce) package frozen corn
1 tablespoon chopped cilantro
1 can black beans, rinsed and drained
1 bag of salad topper tortilla strips
vegetable oil


Directions:

Place chicken, tomatoes, enchilada sauce, onion, green chiles, and garlic into a slow cooker. Pour in water and chicken broth, and season with cumin, chili powder, salt, pepper, and bay leaf. Stir in corn, beans, and cilantro. Cover, and cook on Low setting for 6 to 8 hours or on High setting for 3 to 4 hours.

To serve, sprinkle tortilla strips over soup. Add shredded mozzarella.

Hey Frufra and Katsm0711 - It's the simplest recipe with the longest prep time ever! There's a lot of pressure on me to supervise a 4 hour boil - I can't leave the house! Do I set an alarm at 1/2 hour intervals so I can check the water level?

Way to go Cathy! My contribution, that I'm making right now btw:

Hot Cocoa Cupcakes

1 1/8 cup all purpose flour
2 hot cocoa packets (this measures out to approx 1/2 cup)
1 1/4 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp salt
3/4 cup white sugar
1 egg
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
3/4 cup buttermilk
1/2 cup butter melted

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. In a bowl, whisk egg and sugar until smooth. Add in your buttermilk, butter and vanilla and mix until smooth. Sift your dry ingredients together and add to the wet mixture, mixing until well combined. Line a muffin tin with liners and scoop batter into each cup. Bake for 16-20 minutes.

I made them with marshmallow buttercream and they're too sweet, so this time I'm trying fresh whipped cream. But they really do taste like hot cocoa, as apposed to a chocolate cupcake!

Not talking about something doesn't usually help, but whatever... I'm not trying to offend any of you or go against your thread but some of us do have to talk about it.

People are probably buying the assault rifles because they think that gun control laws are going to come down? Why someone would need an automatic weapon, other than soldiers and police, I don't know...

By the way, I do have guns in my home properly stored. I'm repeating myself, but not everybody reads every thread. I wish people who have guns at home would re-examine their cabinets to make sure they are secure enough. If you have a troubled family member, maybe remove them from the home permanently or until the family member is stable.

If anyone is interested, I found an interesting set of charts. They are from The National Post site in Canada. That is actually a conservative-type paper, so they would be for less govt regulation if anything.

The first charts are a breakdown of 2015 murders of Infants, Children and Teens to Age 18 (19th year). The number one cause at 62.8 percent is firearms.

The second chart shows the relationship between Households with guns and Child Death caused by Firearms from 1981 thru 2010.

A gun in the house increases the probability of suicide by 50%. Most people don't use their guns for protection, they use them to shoot people they are mad at, or themselves. Successful use of a gun (other than by law enforcement) for one's own protection very rarely happens.

I have an awesome recipe for a broccoli and cheese type quiche dish. It is a HUGE smash at pot luck parties and BBQ's. It's fattening, but delicious.

1 lb of cottage cheese
3 eggs
1 tbsp of flour
4 tbsp of butter (melted)
1 package of frozen chopped broccoli (or spinach or asparagus)
1 package of the whole swiss cheese slices (ones that you would use in a sandwich) and cut it up into course pieces with your fingers. I can't remember off the top of my head how many ounces or lbs it is...but it's quite a bit...yum.

Mix it all together and put into a casserole dish. Cook at 350 for 45 min to 1 hour and then remove. Let it sit so it can cool and fully harden.

YUUUMMMY....everyone asks for this recipe. I've never told a soul. You are all my first. Shhhhhh

Easy Vegan Vegetable Curry

2 tablespoons vegetable oil
3 potatoes, peeled and cubed
1 yellow onion, diced
3 cloves garlic, minced
2 teaspoons ground cumin
1 teaspoons cayenne pepper
4 teaspoons curry powder
2-3 teaspoons garam masala
1 (1 inch) piece fresh ginger root, peeled and grated or minced (Freeze for easier grating)
2 teaspoons salt
1 (14.5 ounce) can diced tomatoes
1/2 can (15 ounce) garbanzo (chickpeas) beans, rinsed and drained
1 package frozen steam-in-bag broccoli, cauliflower, carrot mix
1/2 package frozen green peas
1 (14 ounce) can coconut milk

Directions
1. Place potatoes into a large pot and cover with salted water. Bring to a boil over high heat, then reduce heat to medium-low, cover, and simmer until just tender, about 15 minutes. Drain and allow to steam dry for a minute or two.

2. Meanwhile, heat the vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Stir in the onion and garlic; cook and stir until the onion has softened and turned translucent, about 5 minutes. Season with cumin, cayenne pepper, curry powder, garam masala, ginger, and salt; cook for 2 minutes more. Microwave steam-in-bag broccoli, cauliflower, carrot mix as per instructions. Add the tomatoes, garbanzo beans, potatoes, 1/2 bag frozen peas and bag of steamed veggies when they are done. Pour in the coconut milk, and bring to a simmer. Simmer 10 minutes before serving.

Obviously I cheat by using frozen veggies but the flavor is not compromised, promise. You can, of course, use fresh, but you will have to cook longer.

You might want to have an extra can of coconut milk on hand just in case the curry seems a bit dry. Also, a package of naan bread would be good!

Adjust cayenne to your palate, although 1 tsp for a pot of food this large is not terribly hot, however if you are heat sensitive you might want to start out with half a teaspoon.

When purchasing ginger, break off just what you need. A friend of mine thought she had to buy those huge branches. No! Just break off what you will need for your recipe. I usually buy a piece about the size of a finger at a time and wrap what I don't use and put it in the freezer.

Lastly, I buy most of my spices at the Spanish markets. The prices are way lower than supermarkets!

Just want to throw in my favorite Christmas recipe - I give it as presents to family, neighbor, work, etc.

ENGLISH TOFFEE

1 pound butter (NOT margarine, margarine will NOT work!)
2 cups sugar
2 cups slivered almonds
3 7 or 8 ounce Hershey bars.

Chop 1 1/2 Hershey bars up into small pieces.

Melt butter in large, heavy saucepan. Add sugar and almonds. Bring to a boil, stirring almost constantly, until candy thermometer reaches 300 degrees. (Takes about 10 minutes). Mixture will be a golden color. Pour mixture into buttered 13 X 10 (or whatever is about that size) jelly roll pan - use spoon to spread out. Sprinkle Hershey bar pieces over, let melt 2-3 minutes, and spread over candy mixture. Chill.

Chop up other 1 1/2 Hershey bars. Flip candy over - will be hard and usually in one piece. Sprinkle cut up Hershey bars over candy and put under broiler for a few minutes. I usually put broiler on around 400 degrees and do it 2-3 minutes, until chocolate is softened. Spread chocolate over candy with knife and chill.

Break up candy into pieces. Makes around 3 1/2 pounds.

Sometimes I use chocolate chips instead of Hershey bars. Keeps well in the fridge.

Love Actually is my annual gift wrapping movie accompanied by chocolate coated scorched almonds. Mmmmm!

And some tips for delicious chocolate chip cookies - brown the butter, wrap the cookie around a teaspoon portion of Nutella. Also, I used Lindt Sea Salt chocolate blocks chopped up. You're welcome!

@Jessica it's not that people say "eww" I don't want to talk about it, it's that they come to a mind numbing celebrity gossip site to get their mind off of these subjects for a second but than see it pop there as well and that's when the "eww" is appropriate. This is an example of why Dlisted will always be my number one favorite gossip site, no unnecessary argument starting subjects, just pure unnecessary celebrity snark. But I do love the comment section here more than anywhere else. Gawker actually has a story and a commenter gave the break down. *WARNING, I'M NOT AN EXPERT*near as I could tell an assault rifle is a continuous fire, self-feed (bullets) weapon. Semi requires one trigger fire but several bullets can come out. Again I'm not an expert and this is second hand info.

@stewmcg, a lot of what has been reported is still unconfirmed, but just wanted to say if he did have Aspergers, the kids have a lot of trouble with social interaction and can seem really strange to someone unaware of the condition. Children with Aspergers as a whole are not violent.

Just wanted to point out your cousins kids observations could come from someone just being different. I really hope people don't shy away from people with Aspergers because of this tragedy.

Glad this group didn't fall for this loaded topic. The DM has been so manipulative with their coverage of the tragedy, too. They did it with the nurse in the UK, too. While it's fun to gossip and speculate on celebrity rumors, it is damaging to do so with real, proven events, particularly where speculation and innuendo add more fuel to an already volatile and painful situation. Glad to read about recipes or gossip.

BUCKEYES

I buy a few packages of those mini cupcake paper cups but that's optional (good idea if you're giving them away as gifts).

2 cups smooth peanut butter
1 cup softened butter
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
4 cups confectioners sugar, sifted
4 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips
1 tablespoon vegetable oil.

Directions
1. In a large bowl, mix together the peanut butter, butter, vanilla and confectioners' sugar. The dough will look dry. Roll into 1 inch balls and place on a waxed paper-lined cookie sheet. It's sticky work, so you can dust your hands periodically with powdered sugar.
2. Press a toothpick into the top of each ball (to be used later as the handle for dipping) and chill in freezer until firm, about 60 minutes.
3. Melt chocolate chips in a double boiler or in a bowl set over a pan of barely simmering water. Stir frequently until smooth. Add a tablespoon of vegetable oil.
4. Dip frozen peanut butter balls in chocolate holding onto the toothpick. Leave a small portion of peanut butter showing at the top to make them look like Buckeyes. Put back on the cookie sheet (or into little cupcake cups) and refrigerate until serving.

Don't eat too many as you're making them or you WILL get sick, lol!

These all sound so delicious! Here's mine:

Rocky Road Squares


1⁄2 cup margarine
1 1⁄2 cups graham cracker crumbs
1 can sweetened condensed milk
1 cup semisweet choco. chips
1 1/3 cups flaked coconut
1 cup chopped walnuts

In 9"x 13" pan or 8" x 8"pan, melt margarine. Sprinkle crumbs over margarine in pan.
Press evenly in pan. Add chips, followed by coconut then nuts. Pour the condensed milk evenly over all.

To make them rocky road, add miniature marshmallows. Bake in
350° oven for 25 to 30 minutes or until lightly browned. Drizzle with melted chocolate when you remove from oven. Cool then cut into squares.

That said, I saved the Buckeye recipe. One question: Is it legal to make them if you're not in Ohio? LOL, and om nom nom nom!
