January 6. (That was also the day all the Orthodox kids took off for Christmas when I was in school.)

I take down Christmas decorations during the first few days of January, but outside lights can stay up and lit until February. It's cold and dark, why not keep things bright and sparkly for a while longer? :)

Jules_345 said...

Whenever I can get my husband out there...hopefully before the kids go back on the 7th!

When my housemates get around to it.

For our tree, I imagine that will come down on New Years' Day. It's already shriveling up. :(

Today the whole shebang comes down.

Amber said...

Tree is New Year's Day if I'm in town, otherwise shortly after.

@karen - how ya feelin, champ? :)

@holiday where do u live?

Seachica said...

The tree comes down after New Years.

As early as possible. Sometimes on Christmas afternoon. In fact, I don't even put them up any more.

@Amber, I'm okay! I took Excedrin before the hangover hit and very shakily went and got food and now I'm fine. Not hungover or still drunk.

But I'm a waste of space at work. Can't concentrate on anything but refreshing CDAN. :)

When I was a kid, my dad accidentally put a blinker bulb in the baby Jesus plastic nativity set they stuck in the front yard (think late 70s), mother raised holy hell about it & dad picked that moment to be stubborn & refused to fix or have anything to do with it. He lasted until April with baby Jesus blinking the entire time, our house was forever known by that by all our friends.

The lights come off when i cant stand looking at them anymore. Mr liddy's solution is to unplug them. So one fine day in first week or so of jan, i take em down. No biggie. I put them away too. So not a big deal, but mr liddy acts like he has to dismantle the space shuttle! Lol

Karen said...

Angela, that is AWESOME.

@kats: I grew up in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. "The Christmas City."

When I was a kid we left our tree up until Valentines Day. I still laugh about that. Now we take it all down the first weekend in Jan so we can recycle the tree for mulch.

Tree is coming down on Monday unless Mr. B's "worst cold in the history of civilization" doesn't improve and I have to keep nursing him. Outside lights come down the same day.

I'm lazy.

Angela, LOVE IT!

We didn't put lights or decorations this year. Spent Christmas at the beach, and I wanted to come home to a clean house.

LottaColada said...

A few days after New Years, typically a weekend. The tree also comes down. I put up my decorations kind of late this year so I'm sad to take everything down =(

hotchacha said...

I took mine down yesterday. But then I have a disco ball in my living room that I use every day so it's always sparkly in here.

:-)

Before new years day. My grandmother always said it was bad luck to take the old into the new year. My mom kept the tradition and so do I.

Anna V. Xol said...

My tree is fake (and it lies too) so will be coming down whenever i feel like it next week. The lights and decorations will come down then too.

Will miss this time of yeat. :(

katsm0711 said...

By lights do u mean all decorations? If I get a concolar fir which smells like beautiful oranges and pine, I leave it as long as I can bc it smells so good. This year I had to get a small generic tree so it's going to the curb any day now. I didn't even get it an entire week before Xmas :(

Angela said...

Thanks guys, we still get a kick out of it & they've been together for 45 years so the Christmas"episode" didn't do lasting harm.

After Orthodox Christmas, usually the last of the holidays of the season.... My B Day too.

As a kid, I had a friend whose parents left the Christmas lights on the house all year long and only plugged them in during the holidays. Strange to see that in the middle of summer!
I also had a father-in-law who would bag the tree--lights, decorations, tinsel and all--and carry it up to the attic, then bring it back down and unveil it again every holiday. (A fake tree, obviously...)

Mama June said...

@Angela, that's awesome! :)

I took the tree down yesterday, kitty was having too much fun climbing to the middle and chasing her tail. I'll probably take the outside lights down this weekend.

Week after New Year's. It's really depressing to undecorate, though, so I leave a small string of white lights up in my living room through February. Just brightens up some depressing months.

hothotheat said...

Didn't put them up this year. Didn't decorate at all. Normally, tho', New Years eve (day).

auntliddy said...

Men and colds!!!!! They can get a spear in the eye and not complain anywhere near as much as when they have a cold!!!! Lol

Stacey Charter said...

wELL IT'S ALWAYS BEEN THE WEEKEND AFTER nEW YEARS BUT nOW SINCE @jAZZY'S GMOM SAYS THAT i MAY DO IT nEW yEARS EVE. (oops sorry for caps -at work-too lazy to retype) it was kind of a crappy year and I don't need to drag any of that shiznit into 2013 with me.

JJ said...

Mine usually stay up long past new years but everything has been taken down already.

We have a new kitten who has been hell on the tree and decorations and I actually considered taking them down before the 25th. Next year she will hopefully be more mellow.

katsm0711 said...

Lol @jj I got 2 kittens a month ago! First I said no tinsel, then as I learned I'm supposed to start the kittens in a small room, then slowly introduce them to the rest of the house, I was lucky and the room happens to be my upstairs, with the tree and decorations downstairs. After all the decorations r gone then the kitties can go downstairs. Are u havig trouble keeping urs from clawing furniture? My last cat was declawed (not by me) and old and mellow so im kinda shocked at how much more work kittens are!

I will take down all my inside decorations and tree next weekend -hubby likes to be as close to Epiphany as possible; and I must admit it that I'm from Northern Vermont and have no problems leaving the outside house lights up all year long! We just plug them in after Thanksgiving. I do have Santa and the reindeer come in but the lights outlining the house? Year round baby! Don't judge me please...

Usually the weekend after New Year's. I might start taking some of it down this weekend though. Just kind of depends on my mood.

califblondy said...

OMG Angela, that's hilarious.

I might take them down this weekend or I might not.

Ari said...

I think I'm going to do it tomorrow

May Flower said...

We don't have a tree or decorations inside the house.

Our outside lights stay up until the last day of the National Western Stock show. It's a tradition (not one we made up).

Unknown said...

You mean you're supposed to take 'em down?

MC said...

Most decorations come down New Year's Eve for me. I may leave a strand or two of indoor lights up a bit longer just because I enjoy them, but all outdoor lights and all other decorations come down NYE day.

Jan 7th, the day after Little Christmas.

New Year's Day.

Pogue Mahone said...

We keep them up until New Year's Eve.

Janet296 said...

Lol...what Christmas lights?

Comma Chaser said...

We take everything down on the epiphany, which I believe is January 7th. Wifey is a Catholic, so I defer to her traditions if/when she wants them.

Unknown said...

I didn't put any up...

Lelaina Pierce said...

I'll be home in five minutes so that's when my decorations are coming down. Except my cards. Those can stay up through New Years.

Angela said...

Robert, your friends and I could have commiserated.

my goal is before Easter.

There was a lot of talk about putting up lights this year, but no one in my ADD family could actually focus on getting it done, so we have none to take down.

I love it when people keep their outdoor christmas lights going into January and February, we get such long winters and they are so pretty and cheery to see. People generally don't take them down until Spring though around here, it's too cold and there is way too much snow in the way of a ladder.
I have a fake white tree and this time of year is the busiest usually for me work wise so I just put a plastic bag over the entire tree and transport it down to the basement after Little Christmas is over.

CanadianMiss said...

Not until after Ukrainian Christmas. Even then, we usually just unplug them until it thaws. Half of them are frozen in place/under snow.
We are on our second year of not taking down lights circling the top of the living room walls. My husband and kids prefer to have those turned on than the ceiling light. Maybe this year I'll take them down...

Eeekalicious said...

I really enjoy Christmas now (since I parted from my ex). I get a real tree now bc there are lots of tree farms in this area that depend on Christmas.

I leave it up until it starts to dry out, usually three weeks or so. I take it out back and cut it up for the fire-pit.

J said...

Little Christmas, Jan 6th and put up on the 7th Dec. it's sorta the tradition in Ireland.

White lilly said...

We put it up December 6th and down January 6th. Catholic traditions, although I'm not catholic, lol

Henriette said...

I don't. I just turn them off for the rest of the year.

I live in a duplex - my neighbor puts them up for us and takes them down.

But my other answer is when people start stealing bulbs around March or so?

Bit dams said...

when the kids go to their dads. th elves come and all the decorations come down. so, sometime between tomorrow and 1/7. i'm ready now. i've been planning the take down.

Mango said...

@ Angela - Great story!

I hate putting up decorations so didn't even bother this year. When I was a kid and the 'rents were alive the decorations and tree had to stay up at least until after Three Kings Day (Epiphany).

Within 6 days of NYD

Whenever I have time and it is safe. Piles of snow knocking my extension ladder over is Griswold Action I wish to avoid. The tree is done by New Years, I set it aside as a mid-summer's bonfire delight. Nice and explosive around Independence Day!

Funny you should ask ... ours just died all by themselves whilst we were out sunning ourselves and drinking wine in the garden (so very hot here!). But traditionally, I take ours down on 5 January, which I'm led to believe is the Twelfth Night and the appropriate time. Aw fuggit, the tree will stay up, sans pretty lights, until then.

My husband is Orthodox so after January 7th.
