I guess all of those family outings didn't help Ben get his director nom after all.

Jennifer Lawrence 2nd nomination since 2011, good for her.

Quvenzhané Wallis is only 8 or 9 I believe.

I can't believe Silver Linings Playbook got so many noms. I'm surprised Kathryn Bigelow wasn't nominated for Zero Dark Thirty. None of it matters though. Lincoln is going to win most of them.

I thought ZDT was totally overrated. But Life of Pi was wonderful. Much better list than Peoples Choice

Henriette said...

Tarantino and Affleck weren't nominated. Bummer. Guess no more Daddy and Me days for Affleck anytime soon.

Frufra said...

BC nominated for best actor?? Isn't that one of the signs? Start stockpiling canned goods!

There are actually movies on this list I'd like to see. That makes me happy.

FSP said...

I can't believe they left off Liz and Dick for best picture.

Henriette said...

My favorite director, Paul Thomas Anderson, wasn't even nominated. Wow!

greenmountaingal said...

I haven't seen any of these movies, but I'm going to see Zero Dark Thirty tomorrow.

I'm not totally surprised by the nominations, but is Bradley Cooper worthy of a Best Actor nom?

I may get flamed for this, but is Helen Hunt really that good? I was surprised when she won years ago. I always think of her from Girls Just Wanna Have Fun.

I really want Joaquin to win. Besides the fact that he's my celebrity boyfriend, he is a fantastic actor and deserves an Oscar. Same with Leo.

Pip said...

I'd really like to see Beasts of the Southern Wild. I watched them announce the noms and was surprised at how skinny Emma Stone really is.

Karen said...

@FSP, me too. And LiLo for Best Actress.

Jessi said...

Ahh much better list than the Peoples Choice. Surprised to see Affleck not on Best Director. I think he deserved that to be quite honest.

What did Leo do to piss off the Academy so much? That boy can't catch a break.

And also happy to see Joaquin and Jennifer Lawrence make the cut.

Kelly said...

Have any of you seen Silver Linings Playbook?

Popnursing said...

I want Joaquin to win to see if he will place nice or say something totally outrageous after months of knocking the Oscars publicly.

greenmountaingal said...

I thought Marion Cotillard would've gotten a nom.

KPeony said...

@ frufra Ha! I had the same reaction. The end is coming indeed

I am pissed off that Samuel L. Jackson didn't get the nom from "Django". I went into the movie rooting for Leo, but SLJ totally stole that movie, IMO.

Yes!! All the movies I planned to see and never got around to it. I feel validated. ;-P

libby said...

Popnursing---Mo'Noique won after her 'fuck awards' campaign; I think Academy members like to reward it, to pretend they're above it all. IMO, ignoring an actor's protestations only provides a nice smokescreen for the nomination/ awards process for the Best Picture & Director awards.
jmo.

Too many snubs to list but I hope Hugh Jackman wins. Bravo to JLaw!

I'm still kind of pissed about the best director snubs. No Affleck or QT?

NO AFFLECK?!? But Joaquin, who totally trashed the Oscars gets nominated?

Elizabeth said...

Affleck got snubbed for Best Director. I'm surprised by that.

Hollyweird said...

Silver Linings Playbooks was amazing. I hate the douche but I have to say he was really good in it along with Jennifer Lawrence. And anytime the two were on screen together - magic.

FSP said...

It's a damn shame, karen.

figgy said...

I'm just SO glad to see Denzel Washington nominated for Flight!

He may be an asshole in real life, but so what? He was fantastic in that role, and that's all that matters.

...though Daniel Day Lewis has it wrapped up for Lincoln.

plrtz glrb said...

I haven't seen any of these movies. where's the nom for cabin in the woods?

Elizabeth said...

Yes, I saw Silver Linings Playbook and it's really good. I'm glad it got noms and yes Cooper did a great job. But Best Picture and Best Actor? They won't win. The nomination is enough. And if Cooper were to win an Oscar when Leo hasn't? That would be messed up. But yes, Silver Linings Playbook is a very sweet dramedy.

Mama June said...

@Reno-I heard silver linings playbook was *really* good, fwiw.

Joaquin was excellent in The Master, glad he got a nom.

Yay for Jennifer Lawrence, a former Kentucky girl!

I have a lot of movies to catch up on before the Oscars!

libby said...

On the bright side, Katy Perry was acting like she expected at least a nomination after her song was declared 'eligible' for Best Original Song---Remember she was insufferable about it? NOT nominated, thank GOD.

Elizabeth said...

How is Hitchcock getting nominated for best makeup? I don't think Anthony Hopkins looked anything like Hitchcock.

libby said...

I think Adele has the song Oscar wrapped up for Skyfall

Jolene Jolene said...

@Reno--I saw Silver Linings, and it really was incredible. I LOVED it. Very funny but not trying too hard. And I hate to say it, but Bradley Cooper was fantastic. So was Jennifer Lawrence, but I thought BC was the standout.

I can't believe such few noms for Django. THE D IS SILENT! I loved that movie too, but I'm a sucker for Tarantino. I'm not shocked that Waltz was the only one with an acting nom, but no director for Quentin?? This was probably my favorite Tarantino movie after Pulp Fiction. The guy's a lunatic, but he's a genius.

Just for fun here's my guesses: best supporting male actor: Christopher Wilkins Django Unchained, female best supporting: anne goaway, best male lead: Daniel Day lewis, Lincoln, best director: Steven Spielberg best picture: Lincoln best actress: naomi watts.

JenX said...

James Spader was robbed! lincoln is going to clean up, and he gave the best performance in it.

goheels83 said...

Lmao FSP.

Jolene Jolene said...

Anna Namiss--Agree 100%. Lincoln, unfortunately, will win a lot. They just love Spielberg. The only one I'd actually be happy about with those is Christopher Waltz. He was SICK in Django. That guy steals every single scene he's in....

JSierra said...

Shiiiite that was hard for me to read, mainly because I still cannot open my eyes. Thank you flu.

From all that I have read on here about the Coop it really irks me that he got a best actor nom. And I literally just watched Kathy Lee say she was so excited for him. *Sigh*

I haven't finished watching Life of Pi yet, but what I have seen was pretty great.

I have never even heard of Beasts of the Southern Wild or Amour.

All about Eve said...

@FSP, they don't have refined taste like us

All about Eve said...

@JenX, he was so funny!

lakeuniongirl said...

I really hope Sally Field wins best supporting actress and not Anne Hathaway. Actually, I hope anyone who is not A.H. wins. Yuck.

All about Eve said...

I loved Lincoln so I'm glad it received a lot of nominations. Bradley Cooper is going to be insufferable now that he got a nod. Life of Pi seems like a nice movie and I'm actually rooting for Jessica Chastain to get the Oscar, I've watched her in a couple of movies and she's very talented.

Turkish Taffy said...

Affleck to Academy; "Argo f*** yourself!!!"

L'auteur said...

I think I am the only one who didn't love Lincoln. Yes, I loved DDL in the role, but the film didn't do it for me. And I couldn't stop thinking, "That's Sally Field!" when she was on the screen...That said, go see Beasts of the Southern Wild if you can. It's an amazingly different film and great, great acting.

Silver Linings is also a good movie and very true to life regarding bipolar...

Count Jerkula said...

I thought Lincoln was good, but wasn't really impressed w/ Sally or Tommy Lee. If it wins Best Picture, it just shows it was a weak year.

Daniel Day Lewis could get Best Actor and I'd have no complaints though.

LottaColada said...

@Anna Namiss

"anne GOaway" hahaha I love it

crila16 said...

I'm so happy to see Robert DeNiro being nominated. He's done such crap movies for years and years, and he's so talented. It's so great to see him also in a movie that's being nominated for best movie too.

Kloie said...

Ben Affleck for Senator? :-\

DontRainOnMyPrada said...

I've only seen Les Miserables and I hope both Hugh and Anne win. I will probably cry when/if they do, since I pretty much cried through the entire movie. I was actually most moved by Anne's performance, though. I guess she's said some unfortunate things in interviews lately, but I wish she wasn't getting so much hate.

parissucksliterally said...

VERY sad to see Affleck snubbed for Best Director. He did an incredible job.

Jazzy said...

Everyone I know who saw Silver Linings thought it was good on the side of meh and that JLaw was the best part. B Coop, really?! Haven't enjoyed him since Alias.

I guess Clooney has enough power to get himself nominated, but not enough for people to like Affleck. He won't be seen with his kids again 'til the next film.

I didn't see Les Mis yet (I know, I'm a bad musical theater kid) but I did see The Master and Amy Adams was great. She keeps losing to her co-stars too. I think they want to give it to her, but it'll prob go Hathaway. Like someone mentioned earlier, Anne may fall prey to the supporting actress curse and won't be in a good film ever again. She may be talking about it forever, but no one will care by next year.

The Academy won't nominate Leo because he's never had any formal training and won't kiss their ass. He won't get nominated until some of the old, bitchy purists die.

Quentin and Kathryn Bigelow didn't get nominated because hateful bitches (Spike and James Cameron) poisoned the well.

Jazzy said...

Lincoln will win because it's Spielberg, which is unfortunate because it was a really good year.

AuntJess said...

Yes please let Hugh get this. But I still think the academy is shit. Kathryn was robbed. So was Ben.

Kelly Simmons said...

I agree that James Spader was robbed; that SLP was "on the meh side of good" and that Jennifer Lawrence was the best thing in it.

Shocked to see David Russell's name and not Kathryn Bigelow's. Maybe it's because I think -- How can you not reward a person who stopped production and started over with a new script when Bin Laden was killed? Just the idea of doing that, of scrambling, is amazing to me.

Ok rant over.

Presto said...

There definitely should have been more Django noms. Every lead in that movie was awesome, except maybe Jamie Foxx.

Jason Blue Eyes said...

Looks like it'll be a night of thirds: Third Oscar for Spielberg, third for Day Lewis and possibly a third for De Niro.

Composer John Williams might win his 6th Oscar.

And Lindsay might win $0.50 from a scratch ticket that night.

AnonPLS said...

I am so happy that Joaquin Phoenix was nominated! He was brilliant in The Master and he deserves to win. Such an amazing actor

marine said...

I have! The cast is really good so I'm not surprised they're all nominated...good movie!

Frufra said...

JenX, are you the same JenX who does a piece on KOSU once a week? If so, kudos - I always love it.

If not, hello anyway :-).

libby said...

JBE---LOL!!!

Sis said...

Interesting take on the Leo information...I thought he was robbed of being nominated for an Oscar for the Howard Hughes movie he did a while back.

Anonymous said...

I loved all the acting in silver linings
shocked no director nods for qt an bigelow
Jack black robbed for supporting actor!

Argo was just ok to me

now that life of pi I loved

Kelly said...

Thanks for all the reviews you guys!

Anonymous said...

AFFLECK and TARANTINO both robbed of a nomination !

Anonymous said...

By the way, did anyone see that movie Flight, that Denzel Washington got nominated for ? Did he deserve that nomination ?

Eeekalicious said...

@Turkish Taffy

HAHAHAHA Good one!

Unknown said...

I loooooved the Silver Linings Playbook. And I truly think BC deserved that nom but I sure as hell didn't think he was gonna get it. John Hawkes was snubbed, jmo. Love that Emmanuelle Riva was nominated and not Marion C. Cannot believe The Intouchbles was not nominated for Best Foreign Language Film. Best film of 2012. I follow these things too much. I'm an Oscar bitch.

Unknown said...

p.s. I'm also pissed about the Affleck and PTA snub in Directing. They deserved it.

lilo723 said...

I really hope Anne Hathaway doesn't win. She was good in the role, but it will give her a bigger ego than she already has.

emily_h said...

I saw Les Mis and was shocked by how short Anne's part was after all the fawning over her. And maybe it's cause I'm sick of her, but I really didn't think she was all that. One big emotional scene, who cares. The only other person I saw in her category was Jackie Weaver (who I loved in SLP) so not sure who else I should root for.

Henriette said...

@jenx
James Spader was robbed! lincoln is going to clean up, and he gave the best performance in it.
___________________________________
Totally! James Spader was the best, and Lincoln will get the most wins.

I saw Silver Linings Playbook and think it's just a good rom/com. Nothing that warrants the director beating out Paul Thomas Anderson for The Master or Affleck for Argo. I thought De Niro and Jennifer Lawrence were the best in it and Coop didn't bother me per usual.

ecua said...

Affleck must really have pissed some people off in Hollywood. DiCaprio, too.

Sarah said...

Yeah, Emma is so skinny and blonde now, it sort of detracts from her appeal. She was so cute in that way that was unique before

Sarah said...

Leo banged every VIctoria's Secret Angel ever. The Academy thinks that's reward enough!

Sarah said...

Fo sho

Sarah said...

Love Marion, but she won too recently. They like to make you want it a bit

Sarah said...

I think with Ben winning an Oscar for screenplay right out of the gate, it was hard to live up to that potential for a while with so any other endeavors (see: getting crazy ass).
I think he's back out of the Gigli zone, but perhaps his transparency at wanting it so bad make them withhold it.

Lelaina Pierce said...

I've only seen Argo and Lincoln and while I think Daniel Day Lewis is amazing, I honestly enjoyed Argo much, much more. I cannot believe Affleck was snubbed for this. I guess I need to watch the other films.

tamarind said...

The Master! Good luck JP>

Russell said...

@Jazzy - you do realize that Leo has 3 previous Oscar nominations, do you? Supporting Actor for What's Eating Gilbert Grape, Actor for The Aviator and Blood Diamond.
