Iowa State Basketball Player Gets Proposed To

It is one thing to use a Jumbotron to ask someone to marry you. There are no voices and no one is really sure if it is real or staged. It takes some guts to stand up in front of 7,000 people and tell everyone how you feel about your girlfriend and then ask her to marry you in front of them.

These things always make me squirm a little, like watching ice skaters. What if the answer is no? Then they're both humiliated. Can't see the video but I'm assuming she said yes - good for them!

Yeah for some reason public proposals make me uncomfortable. Definatly not what I would want but I'm a private person.

@DBZee - I think that the right thing to do in that situation is to just say yes in the moment and then decline later in private to avoid public embarrassment.

ditto what Cathy, CamColty, DBZee said.

I think that in cases like this the couple has usually been discussing marriage and he knows she'll say yes. My BF knows what I would say. Otherwise, it's definitely gutsy.

7000 people at a women's college basketball game? I don't buy it.

I was at an N*SYNC concert back in Summer 2001 after I graduated high school. Someone on their crew publicly proposed to his girlfriend in front of the crowd at RFK Stadium in DC. It was obvious that she was uncomfortable since she didn't say yes right away, but the N*SYNC guys were excited and Joey Fatone was snapping pictures of them on a camera.

I bet she changed her answer later that night.

I'm not a fan of public proposals either. I agree that it can't be a complete surprise. The couple has to have gone ring shopping, talked seriously about getting engaged etc.

And, even if the couple has been talking about it, the guy better be certain that the girl likes being the certain of attention. I would hate to be put on the spot like that.

I've had a public proposal, and it was kinda overwhelming/confusing. It's tough to process what just happened when you have people staring at you and swarming you.

Hopefully she was able to keep her head in the game after this. Congrats to those two young'uns!

when i think romantic I don't think basketball shorts and potato on top of your head

but whatever works for them!

I feel the same way about restaurant proposals. You are giving the ring to the wait staff and then what if she says no? I'm sure the whole staff is waiting on pins and needles to know what the answer was.

I actually would have loved a public proposal from my fiance since I knew I would say yes if it happened. He's a much more private person than I am, though, so it turned out to be on a beach where no one could see us.

I said yes anyway. :)

Very easily true.
Google the Lady Vols for an example.

Ditto what Betsy said.

I think it depends on the person and the couple. When I was proposed to, it was after I'd all ready picked out the ring and we knew it. I just wanted the whole down on one knee (in private) thing. I thought their proposal was adorable. And: Go Cyclones!!!

Haha this happened to me when I was serving a table. Felt bad for the guy.

Two thoughts, those are some terrible shorts the players have to wear. And she better give the ring right back because I'm sure there are rules against playing with jewelry.

Wait, three thoughts...look how happy her teammates are for her. That is awesome.

I knew I was getting proposed to when I was engaged the first time, but he surprised me because the ring came back early from being sized and he took me to castle rock ( where I lived at the time) and had written in the snow for me to see. So you can still surprise someone :)

Poor guy! Being rejected in public must be so humiliating! It makes you wonder how long it takes some of these guys to work up the courage to propose again.

I think that a public proposal is just a big statement from a large personality with big feelings for someone. They want to share their happiness with everyone. I think it's charming.

That's one thing that makes me well up, because it's such a special moment.
