Your Turn

Paper or plastic? If it is paper do you need handles? Do you bring your own bag? How often do you forget it?

In Austin there is a plastic bag ban in stores, so it is always bring your own or paper.

Paper! "Support the pulp paper industry!" as my husband always says. But then he's a forester and timber consultant :-)

Bring my own reusable bags to Whole Foods and Trader Joe's, get plastic everywhere else. I have a dog, so I use them everytime I walk him :)

Paper or reusable majority of the time but I sometimes take plastic if I forget since we have a pooch.

I have the cloth bags, but when I forget them I choose plastic so I can use them as waste basket liners.

In San Francisco, there's a ban on plastic bags w/r/t to grocery stores. The city recently introduced a 10-cent per paper bag charge, which wouldn't bother me except that extra charge goes to the store, not to any recycling program (or even the city's general fund). In any event, I've been using reusable canvas bags for last couple years for groceries.

When I get paper bags, I reuse them as receptacles for recyclables.

Plastic as you need the handles when you're walking to the store and back to carry, plus then we re-use it for the kitchen garbage can under the sink! Some stores charge us for plastic bags here though so we're careful to only go to the ones that don't as we refuse to pay for bags!

Plastic because I use them to clean up after my dog. I always forget the canvas bags I bought.

Paper IF I forget or am not in my car but I have back up there and I typically bring my own cloth bags without fail.

Plastic ban here in Portland. Even the dollar store uses paper now! But I have a zillion reusable Trader Joes and Fred Meyer bags .. Many of times I forget so I have to by a new one ( or three ) hence the zillion bags. Someday I'll remember to store them in the car trunk.

TracySwingKid said...

Reusable bags every time.

FSP said...

Don't know. My servants do my shopping.

BTW I HATE those plastic bags and my mum in law wraps everything in them. Then she can't remember what it is in the freezer and it just gets tossed. No biggie cuz it's usually just the heel of an old loaf of bread.

I'm like Laura, here in Austin the bag ban is in effect. I take my own to regular grocery store but get the paper ones with handles at whole foods, they make great trash bags when cooking because I can sit them on the floor right under my feet and they stand up. I am weary of meat going in my reusable bags have to figure something out.

I live in Portland, home of bag shaming. :b

I have a gazillion bags in my trunk and carry my favorite straw shopping tote everywhere. One the rare occasions I do forget, it's always paper bags b/c I can upend the shredder into them and put them in the recycling bin. The waste company doesn't allow plastic bags in the recycling and my anxiety beagle NEVER poops on walks, so plastic bags don't get used much around here.

LottaColada said...

I have reusable bags but get plastic in certain places. Some stores like Target even have a can where you can recycle unwanted plastic bags and I bring them back.

Ms Cool said...

Both and we reuse the crap out of them.

AuntJess said...

Plastic. I have 2 cats that crap like grown men. The bags are the best size to help scoop the poop.

Turkish Taffy said...

Plastic, but I don't drive. Paper would break by the time I could carry it home.

EmEyeKay said...

Reusable bags, for a long time now. There are always some in the car.

No plastic allowed in Seattle!

@Izzie, I keep meaning to tell you that I DID see Peace Thor. Thanks for sharing! :)

I always use my own re-usable bags. We've had charges for plastic bags for years now and I refuse to pay for them.

Ha on bag shaming!!!

I am the queen of my local Publix with my totes(12) which fold and zip into their own case for storage in the car. They are color coded, used in the basket, and the trick is to have an extra one for the bagger to start with. Several customers took phone pix of my system. Great idea for a small business:)

For plastic, google how to plarn.

Cloth and if I forget I buy another from the store as penance. I drive a car to work so this is one way I can control my footprint a little.

I would love to see an all out plastic ban here. No need to keep giving them out in 2013. Same with Styrofoam.

Anna V. Xol said...

I try to bring my big tote but if i don't plastic and double bagged. Need the handles to cross the streets with two toddlers. Not only do i need to keep the babies from running into traffic but crawling around when your bag snaps to look for your stuff gets you banned from the bus. I swear I was not groping that homeless man, my vitamins fell near his feet!

SusanB said...

Plastic - although I do reuse some of them. I just can't remember to bring my own.

*snickers at Aunt Jess' cats*

portlandjewel said...

I live in Portland too. I have probably 15 reusable bags of varying sizes. I am pretty good about remembering my bags and making sure I have some in the car at all times. I'm crazy green though so its been many years, in the beginning I always forgot them in the house after emptying... Also: quicktip! Remember to wash your reusable bagsregularlly! They are full of bacteria!:)

Izzie said...

@Agent- I want to see a pic of your system! I'm totally type A like that, too.

Your last word looked like "plam" on my laptop so I googled "plam." o_O I could not figure out what that had to do with plastic bags. (Warning: first Google listing is an urban dictionary entry.)

Comma Chaser said...

Skewer toward reusable. That is, the ones that the cats haven't shredded yet.

Gayeld said...

@Alicia. I store them in the trunk of the car or the back of the van and still forget them more often than I use them.

When I do forget, it's Dealer's Choice. I can use either.

seaward said...

When I shop at Aldi, I don't use any bags. I just throw everything in the trunk. No big deal.
If I'm shopping at Meijer, I get plastic because their paper bags are so thin and worthless. I reuse them for bathroom trashcan liners, and cat/dog poop. My husband packs his lunch in them, too. We get a good amount of use out of them.

chumsley said...

Even though I think it's a good thing, I'm still feeling some growing pains because I'm not used to the ban yet.

But what's more irritating than my inability to keep reusable bags in my car is that our legislature thinks that trying to get rid of Austin's bag ban is a good use of their time. Because spending time on that issue is way more important than education or the budget. SMH

@Agent I do the same. Black for meat products, green for veg and fruit, blue for frozen and red for miscellaneous items.
It is easy once you know how.

Wen said...

Reusable and plastic. I reuse the plastic for garbage and the kitty box.

plastic, and I use them for picking up my dog's poop on my walks, and for disposing dirty diapers.

In San Francisco, we banned plastic bags and charge 10 cents for paper. I usually end up buying a paper bag, because I don't travel with a burlap bag. My GF is really good at remembering to bring a reusable bag. Plastic bags really are a third world scurge we don't need in the USA in the 21st century.

Canvas.

Alicia said...

@portlandjewel- thanks for the tip! I rarely wash my bags but I'm throwin them in heavy laundry rotation now! :-)
@gayeld lol @ dealers choice - I use that phrase all the time when I bartend - someone orders a whiskey and I ask " well gut rot, top shelf 12 year aged or is it just dealers choice today? "

Reese said...

I use my own cloth bags (have since college), and wash them in hot water every week.

jbeebs said...

Plastic ban is in effect in my city too. Has been for years. I use canvas or paper when I forget. The back of my SUV is so cluttered with reusable bags. I do miss the plastic.

KPeony said...

Plastic for dog poop. My dog poops at least three times on each walk. No idea how she makes so much since she's not a big eater.

TotallyDistracted said...

I have carried my own bags to stores for years. The only place I don't is clothes shopping.

Anna V. Xol said...

Wow. There is a word for everything.

Baka Neko said...

Plastic because I find them easy to clean up the cat boxes with.

Gayeld said...

@Alicia. LOL! How many take you up on it? One of my college roommates was a cocktail waitress and it used to amaze us how stupid guys could get depending on what she wore to work that day (we also tracked outfits to calculate what earned her the best tips. Skin=Good. Too much skin=Bad.)

@Izzie, hahahaha sounds like something Amanda Bynes might be into.

Plastic I resuse for dog walks, picking up cigarette butts, etc...

Bring my own canvas jobs. Sometimes if i firget i ger plastic for trash liners, and i recycke the plastic bags as well. Very rarely get paper, they dont look very cimposty at all.

Plastic, perfect for dumping kitty litter.

Don't take the bags at all anymore, just put the groceries in my basket and then transfer them to the car. I do it so much, it's becoming a running joke at Target with this one guy who usually checks me out. Every time he sees me, he always says "no bags!" before I say it.

I too use the current bags I have for trash can liners.

LLBean Boat & Tote canvas bags with the zipper tops. I have at least 4 different sizes and they last forever. They also fit perfectly into those baskets on the back of my bike. I also have a few raggedy reusables on standby at work and a really crusty one in my laptop bag. Yeah, those things need to be washed or replaced. Nasty.

in australia, they haven't banned the plastic bag yet - which is good because i use them for the rubbish bin.

but a lot of people use the ubitiquious green bag - it can be other colours. they are hilarious and everywhere, including all over the place as rubbish, just like plastic bags. junkies use them as handbags. not just for shopping anymore, kansas.

i have a deluxe granny trolley which also fits a case of beer. my boyfriend refuses to use that though

The hipsters would run me out of Bondi if I didn't turn up with suitable Eco brushed calico, colour approved, reusable shopping bags.

Plastic bags, because I use them for garbage, dog poo, and various other things. I wouldn't mind of they were banned, however.

Reusable bags, but I'll get plastic once in a while because I reuse them for my garbage.

Plastic. They double as trash bags for the bathroom, and are used when scooping kitty litter. I also occasionally bring one into my car for trash.

GeauxTigahs said...

100% agree! I grew up in a small town with a paper mill. I remember when they started switching from paper to plastic. We always had to say paper!!!! Now look what they've done. Should have left it alone.

dbfreak said...

I must have 20 reusable Publix canvas bags because I forgot the ones I had already bought for a couple of big weekly shopping trips. You can pack so much more into just a few of those bags than you can in plastic bags. And I only take one trip from the car to the house with groceries - it's much harder to carry 10 plastic bags vs 3 - 4 canvas bags at one time :)
That being said, for a trip for just a few items, I get plastic - I use them for scooping cat litter and as liners for my small garbage cans.

LaLa said...

I get half and half for the same reason!!

Nothanksdarlin said...

Reusable. Almost always. I made a vow to myself that if I forgot my bags I had to carry my stuff out individually with no bags. Do that a few times and you stop forgetting. I'm more lax now that I have the babies. We reuse the plastic bags to collect the pulp from the juicer (easy clean up) and the bathroom trash bags

astrogirl said...

Do they still have that members only veggie co-op on King St zeldafitzgerald? Been thinking I should join if its still there

I use my Eco Bag when I remember it and try to do paper otherwise.

Plastic, and I could never live anywhere where there's a plastic bag ban. First off, I use plastic bags for my trash so I can fill one up per day and dump each bag (tied up, natch) into the outdoor trash bin at the end of the day. That way the trash doesn't stink up my kitchen like how it used to when I used to buy trash bags. Secondly, I find plastic bags a whole lot easier to deal with than any other kind. I tried using reusable cloth bags exactly once, and when I found that the baggers always stuffed those bags until they couldn't hold anything else and realized I could barely even hold onto one bag because of it (I have chronic nerve pain issues on my arms), that was the last time I ever attempted that. BTW, I don't use all the plastic bags I get; I find that I usually stick with Walmart's or Walgreens' bags for my trash because they're sturdy enough, and every other bag I deposit into the recycling bin (except if it's been used to carry milk, which I just throw away). And thankfully my municipality is one that uses an advanced enough recycling program to where they CAN and DO recycle plastic bags.
