Linda Perry Makes The Notebook Look Like An After School Dance

I have made no secret of my loathing for The Notebook and how it makes all people doing wooing in relationships look awful. Now, Linda Perry has gone beyond The Notebook and made everyone just that much further behind in the romance department. Yesterday Sara Gilbert shared with the world her engagement story to Linda Perry. Yeah, you will never top this. You could spend more money, but this worked out way to well for anyone to beat it. Every trick and surprise worked. That is rarely the case.

“We go to a park, we have food and we’re eating it, it’s really sweet and there’s this guy sitting playing guitar, like a street musician. He starts playing this song that we love … I’m like, ‘Oh, that’s so weird, this is so magical and amazing.’”

“So that ends, and she’s like, ‘Oh I’m gonna ask him to play this other song,’ but this other song is really obscure and this guy wouldn’t know it, but magically he knows it,” she continued. “And suddenly the people picnicking next to us pull out string instruments from under the blanket and walk over and they start playing ‘Love Song’ (by the Cure).”

Perry then displayed four t-shirts with one word each, “Will. You. Marry. Me.” The fifth shirt she presented had a question mark and then she pulled out the ring. Perry then told Gilbert to “turn around” and there stood their mothers and a couple of friends.

“So I think that’s it and it’s the most amazing proposal ever and then … this guy walks up and she’s like. ‘This is John Waite.’ And he starts playing ‘Missing You.’”

Playing The Cure is always awesome in my book.

ethorne said...

Aww too bad she said no.

VIPblonde said...

That is pretty epic!! Good on them! I sat next to them at a restaurant before they "announced" that they were a couple; they were really sweet with eachother!

Ok I'm a sucker for romantic, mushy stuff. That's so sweet, I had no idea Linda Perry was such a romantic.

camembert said...

Bully for romance.

(But ugh, how I hate the Cure.)

MontanaMarriott said...

Fuck, that even beats getting a humongous rock, which is my measure of love, lol.

LottaColada said...

Umm.... I still like the notebook's better since there was no actual marriage proposal or picnics or serenading or surprise guests involved.

Beta said...

I think it's sappy as fuck, but kudos for orchestrating it, im sure it wasn't easy!

Cathy said...

I'm confused about the t-shirts. Was Linda Perry wearing all five of them and peeled them off in layers? If she was just "displaying" them, then what was the point of them being t-shirts? Everything else sounds very sweet though.

Tempestuous Grape said...

I would have preferred The Caterpillar song, but still lovely!

EmEyeKay said...

So, so sweet, and very well thought out!

Dazed said...

I'm such a sucker for sappy romantic stories. @ethorne I hope that's a joke. That story needs a happy ending.

Tempestuous Grape said...

Hello @EmEyeKay :::waves:::

Leah said...

Is Linda Perry ill? She looks stick thin.

Staple611 said...

Yeah, the t-shirt thing confused me, too. I think it only makes sense if there were five separate people in t-shirts that showed up, right?

Unknown said...

Any person that involves The Cure in my marriage proposal gets a big fat YES

Lucas said...

Should I ever take the plunge again there is no way I'm going to do all this nonsense to ask. Most likely the gf and I would be hanging out in the kitchen in out pjs doing dishes when I'd ask. And I wouldn't buy a ring in advance because for any man to assume he knows his lady's taste is folly. We'd go pick something nice out together, since she'll have to wear it forever and all.

Unknown said...

Linda Perry knows what's up.

Ms Cool said...

Too much. Ugh. But then, I only get sappy romantic for Mr. Darcy.

Lucas said...

*our pjs. Yeesh.

Lucas said...

@Staples - I think the shirts were already layered so all she had to do was pull them off one at a time after they were on.

SusanB said...

@Lucas - where were you when I was single?

Mr. B proposed in the car in front of the jewelry store after I picked out my ring. It was still romantic.

Topper Madison said...

I can only assume this is what Sara was thinking: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6NXnxTNIWkc

Topper Madison said...

Also, is Love Song really that obscure??

VIPblonde said...

@Leah Sara is vegan; perhaps Linda is too. Vegan often gets mistaken for ill

Discobitch said...

Just as well it wasn't a proposal for you then eh? Pity the poor person who wants to do that :/

Discobitch said...

Going by today's youth (beliebers 1d fans etc) then maybe :(

Seachica said...

Lucas, for the very first time, you've said something that dents my e-crush a tiny bit. Go for the romantic proposal. A woman wants a special story to share for the rest of her life.

You're right on about the ring, though. My fiance gave me the stone in a bare bones setting, and then -- after proposing -- said we'd design a setting that I love for the permanent ring. It worked beautifully, and I constantly get compliments on the ring. FWIW, he also gets huge compliments -- from women and men -- on the romantic way he proposed.

Ah hell, here's the link to our proposal story. Because it's *still* friggin romantic, and I love sharing it. My proposal story

EmEyeKay said...

Hi @T-Grape! Miss you! *waves back*

Amy in MI said...

Lmao Montana. That is the measure of love! Haha

Ms Cool said...

@Seachica - that was indeed a very romantic and sweet proposal. Best I have heard. Congratulations!

Hazeldazel said...

awwwwww that was a cute story and so romantic. Even when you know the answer will be and always was "yes" it's nice to go the extra mile for the gesture.

And it totally gets you laid.

Unknown said...

@seachica: that ring idea is awesome! I think I might drop that into a conversation at some point since I want the ring that I want, dammit, but I fear that the emperor likes things very traditional (ie have a ring so that the proposal can be an unexpected surprise)

Lucas said...

@Seachica - AWWWWWWWW. That was sweet! And not too over-the-top. I'm a lil misty-eyed over here.

MadLyb said...

I don't like sappy, either, but that was pretty cool. She had me at "The Cure". It helps that I'm a Linda Perry fan.

@seachica- that was adorable..congrats!

saycheese said...

omg @ Seachica LOVE your story!!! so sweet that your guy went to all that effort. now I want to go put a lock on that bridge with my hubby too :)

VIPblonde said...

@Seachica That's awesome! Congrats on the proposal, and on finding eachother :)

ownedbyphilo said...

@Seachica that was brilliant. I find big romantic gestures a bit cringy but that was lovely and lump in throatish. When is the wedding???

(I'm a nosy newbie)

Maja With a J said...

I would have died from embarrasment but that's just me...*L* Still happy for these two, they seem like a good couple.

Maja With a J said...

How DO you spell that word??? I have been looking at it for so long now that nothing looks right. *sigh*

Sherry said...

MM: LOL!

OMG I love John Waite! I loved the Babies.

What a sweet story. The Opster didn't do anything super romantic but he asked ME and that's what I wanted.

Speaking of marriages..EmEyeKay when do you get married again?

Livia said...

I'm with Lucas on the marriage proposal thing. Hubby and I talked pros and cons of getting married at length before agreeing to do it, and then went together to get a ring (he got a tool belt).

I think "big gesture" proposals are great for people who are into it, but for us, it would have seemed weird. I wasn't going to get married without discussing the big things - where are we going to live? What are our long term plans and goals? Are they compatible? Do we want kids? If so, how will we raise them? Etc.

After that, it's not really a surprise that we're getting married, so a surprise proposal would just seem forced.

I'm more of a small gesture person, though, so I wouldn't like a big public display of anything anyway.

Izzie said...

@seachica, *loved* your story! When (not if!) I go to Paris, I'm going to look for your sweet little lock of love. :)

Alicia said...

Seachica - what a great guy you have! You made the pregnant lady cry!! Congrats!

Btw I also love this post.. The Cure.. Amazing. It's sappy and I effing love it.

O'Really said...

That's how you propose...LIKE A BOSS. Between Linda and Mr Seachica it sure got dusty up in here.

LottaColada said...

@seachica, awwwww soooo sweet and not sappy! I'm another who will look out for your lock *when* I make it there (fingers crossed!)

Meanie Rhysie said...

Seachica: Omg, I'm all teary-eyed here! Awesome story! Congrats to you and Mr. Sea!

Meanie Rhysie said...

@Sherry. Omg, I looooved The Babys!

Robert said...

@Maja: Double "r," double "s." (If that's the word you meant.)

Seachica said...

Awww, I'm so glad people liked my proposal story! I was a little afraid I was being over-indulgent. The wedding is coming up on July 15th. It's going to be small -- just close family and friends. If the weather holds out the wedding will be on a dock outdoors.

Let's here some more proposal stories! We'll counteract the Lindsay and other trainwreck stories with our own happy tales.

EmEyeKay said...

@Sherry: we still haven't set a date yet. He's kinda hounding me but there's so much going on right now, I'm not ready to start planning a wedding. I couldn't sleep last night because I was trying to think of what I really wanted to do and nothing jumps out at me. We are moving in together in June though, he's going to join us on the beach. Hey, how did your interview go?

@Seachica, I remember reading your story when you posted it last year and it made me smile :)

Aint nothing obscure about The Cure's Lovesong. Ms. Gilbert, how sheltered are you?

crila16 said...

@Seachica...that's a beautiful story. I had watched an episode a few weeks ago on HWOBH (don't tell my boyfriend where I saw it...he thinks the show turns brains to mush) and I told him about the bridge with the lock and key. He said he was going to take me to Paris to see it.

Anyway...I wish you the best of luck with your future nuptuals.

lazyday603 said...

Where was Robert Smith in full fright wig, pale skin & lipstick? She missed a trick. Save that for the 10th anniversary.

Seachica said...

@EmEyeKay - starting to look at wedding venues was what helped me figure out what I wanted. We saw some beautiful traditional places in Atlanta, but it made me realize that I was completely turned off by the big wedding idea. We came back home determined to do something small and low-key in a park or on a lake.

Olive said...

I love good stories about romance but this seems like too much.
It makes me think of that episode of Friends where Rachel and Ross fake being married and throughout the episode they keep editing what their fake wedding was like.
Anyway---congrats to them!

Best proposal ever Seachica!

EmEyeKay said...

@Seachica, I think we're going the same route. I live on a beautiful beach with Vashon Island across the Sound. We both want a small wedding and I think it would work well. A friend of ours is officiating.

Man, I really need to start the planning! Good luck with your details!

Sherry said...

Em: The interview went amazingly well thank you for asking.

Good luck on planning your wedding darling I'm sure the absolutely perfect. Is the little one I'm sorry the short one going to be part of the ceremony?

Seachica: excellent story and congratulations!!

CharRicho said...

Damnit Linda! Sara is supposed to leave you and be with me!!!! How can I compete with that?!

(I seriously had a dream last night about meeting and hooking up with Sara Gilbert. Spooky)

Sherry said...

Meanie : we are two peas girl. We definitely have the same tastes.

EmEyeKay said...

@Sher, that's great to hear!

Yes, The Short One will be part of the ceremony! I've been messaging back and forth with The Future Mr. Kay since this morning and it's official, we'll marry on my beach. A sunset ceremony would be perfect. We have the most beautiful sunsets, I constantly post sunset photos on my FB.

smash said...

Congrats seachica and em! Sorry I have been so MIA! I miss you girls and your weddings will be perfect!

Lucas, my husband proposed on our driveway. It honestly was lackluster. He had a ring that he had contacted a friend of mine to help him choose between some he had picked. We later had to get a different ring when we could find a band to match it. With the proposal being so low key though I wouldn't have taken him seriously without the ring. He is a very shy guy and no frills so I'm not knocking him, just saying it doesn't make for a good story at all. He did sell his motorcycle to buy my ring though, and that is love right there, and for him it's romance.

smash said...

Damnit all! I am in tears before my coffee! Amazing man you have there!

EGB said...

I could read wedding/proposal stories all the live long day, Sea, your's was just lovely! And the only way Sara's could've been better is if the Cure song were Love Cats, and then there were real cats wearing the five t-shirts, as they meandered about, like cats are apt to do...
Em and Sea, please keep us updated on your plans, I live vicariously through so many of you, and Sherry I will keep my fingers crossed for a good turnout from the interview!

EmEyeKay said...

hey @Smash, was just wondering where you've been. Hi, and thank you!

Funny how a sleepless night and this thread today can spur one on... The Future Mr. Kay has agreed to a sunset wedding on the beach. Yay! I'm getting kinda excited!

Now we just have to choose a day. Preferably with a low tide :)

califblondy said...

Good plan on the ring. It's fun choosing it as a couple.

Such a wonderful story @Seachica!! You made me all teary-eyed :) Congrats on your upcoming nuptials and your new adventures!

TSA said...

Thanks for sharing your proposal story, Seachica! Loved it! Linda's proposal was sweet, but your fiance did it right. That was awesome! Congratulations on your upcoming nuptials. I shared your story with my hubby which reminded us of his proposal to me. It was planned, which was fine with me...nice romantic dinner, then a walk outside, then the proposal. What we didn't plan was the random fireworks that went off in the distance directly behind us (this was in August). Timed perfectly. Like a blessing from God!

OKay said...

Aw, I want Linda Perry to propose to me! (DH would totally be down with that...L) I got proposed to while we were in, let's just say, an altered state of consciousness. Four years later we actually got around to it.
Me: I think we should probably get married now.

Him: Okay, but I've got exams for the next two weeks so it will have to be after that.

So three weeks later, we got married!

Seachica said...

@Em - what a wonderful idea! Vashon is my favorite island around here, and I'm picturing a gorgeous sunset. If you don't mind....another suggestion. Get married on a weekday. Mr Sea and I are getting married on a Monday, and that was the best decision we made. Vendors have been eager to discount their rates, because there's so little work during the week. We've gotten our first choice for every thing at a good rate, and our wedding has become a long weekend celebration (baseball game Sat, rehearsal dinner Sun, wedding Mon).

AKM said...

I love Sara SO MUCH. It's not enough that she was Darlene Conner, but she's Sara freakin' Gilbert. Not a fan of Linda's, but I kinda am now, and incorporating The Cure into this makes it that much better.

(Did anyone read The Rest of the Story about "Missing You"? I think it's hilarious that they know "Missing You" is a breakup song and they love it anyway. Usually, that bugs me to no end, but they're in on the joke, so it's cool.)

I either want an "everyday" kind of proposal like Lucas mentioned, or via Jumbotron at Rupp or Busch. Or just, you know, *A* proposal. Sheesh...

Oh, Seachica. You and Dan are adorable, and funny as hell as writers, too. AND...you've made me believe again, IYKWIM. Thanks for something so lovely on a grey and gloomy day.

Just read about another great proposal...Mike McCarthy provides big assist as Green Bay Packers fan proposes to girlfriend on vacation (that's the headline). Guy spots Green Bay coach on the beach. Asks for a photo, then asks the coach to take photo of them. Coach sees the guy take a knee, says "This is so cool!" Snapped like 30 photos for them. So Sweet!

@seachica. Lovely story <3 , loved perrys too. My proposal story would be more to entys taste. We're sitting on the sofa and out of the blue he says October . I'm like what?? Hes all yeah how do u fancy October for getting married. That's it ! Lovely story for the grandchildren :/ I did say yes though. It was amazing to me he proposed at all. I assumed he meant it when he'd always said he wouldn't get married. So the fact he changed his mind for us was as romantic as it could get for me. I got a beautiful ring which we/I chose. Haven't managed to get married yet though as his job we t tits up and I ended up sick from work for 3 mths. Not to worry. Il get that dress on someday :)
