The Lamest Boycott Ever

Stevie Wonder has gone on record to say that he will not perform in Florida or any other state that has Stand Your Ground laws after the verdict in the George Zimmerman trial. Although, the law was not used in the George Zimmerman trial by the defense, it was the reason police did not arrest him until weeks after the shooting and it was used in the jury instructions. When Stevie says something like this, I believe him. He won't play Florida. I'm not sure if he realizes there are 23 other states with similar laws. Apparently Jay-Z and Kanye have also decided to boycott performing in Florida. For Jay-Z there is just one little problem. He is set to play in Florida next month with Justin Timberlake and will make millions of dollars from the concert. So, boycott shmoycott, he will play. He also has said that he will take the boycott on a case by case basis. So, if the check is large enough, then the boycott will not stand in his way. Presumably Kanye will do the same thing. What is the point of announcing a boycott if you don't actually boycott?

Meh. Honestly, with all the crazy shit that happens in Florida, isn't avoiding that state just good life advice?

Key west and Orlando I love. I can without the rest of the state.

remember when he made that occupy wall street t-shirt? sold it for profit?

celebs use these causes to get attention and try and bond with fans, but they are pretty transparent.

I wish they'd boycott performing in my state.

That was J-Z or P Diddy not Stevie W with the stupid TShirt stunt.

Jay Z will make an angry statement from the stage, all will cheer, and he will go home and cash the very big check financed in part by people who support Stand Your Ground.

Jay z is- surprise, surprise-a f*cking hypocrite. Disgusting!

Good! I really hope people stay away from us (Florida). It would be nice to not have to wait forever to get seated at a restaurant or have major traffic problems for once! Boycott us all you want, I promise it doesn't make me sad

@cathy I'm with you. Lets add Cleveland to that list while we are at it. (And I grew up there)

Stevie still performs? As for the others, I wish they would all go away anyhow! Truth is none of them could stand to be out of the limelight, remember when they were all going to move out of the country when GW was elected?

You know at height of apartheid, springsteen, van zandt and many others would not play in south africa. Made a song and video about it- aint gonna play in sun city, with proceeds to african charity. THAT, jay zero, is how you boycott, you teo faced liar.

Their concert is in the (heavily Democratic) south Florida Miami area, so boycotting there doesn't send a message accomplishing nothing.

NomNom83 said...

Yeah, I get the idea of taking a stand, but I'm not sure that "denying" your fans in FL a live show really proves anything. For starters, it won't get the law changed. Fundraising for progressive candidates, keeping the issue alive, those are *something* to get into the hearts and minds of voters. But a boycott? Too broad, too vague, too hasty.

Wen said...

They are just jumping on the bandwagon to promote their concerts. Let's face, they don't give 2 shits about anyone but themselves. POSERS!

I thought Enty was a lawyer. Stand your ground is part of the self defense law in FL.

Now! said...

@AuntLiddy I agree with you that the Sun City boycott was very effective (although Freddie Mercury of Queen, mentioned in another post, was one of the one who broke it). @NamNam, I agree that fundraising and supporting anti Stand Your Ground candidates is probably the most effective way of getting the law changed.

In general, I wish that some of the energy being spent on mourning Trayvon Martin was being spent on helping the millions of young African-American men who are still alive and could benefit from mentoring, educational opportunities, etc.

Some of the celebrities marching for Trayvon probably do this already - Denzel Washington has a long committment to Boys Clubs, for example. Not sure if Jay Z does.

@Nutty - word. Be a part of the solution, don't just wallow around in the problem.

Stevie still plays and he's AMAZING. I'd highly recommending catching a show of his in one of the other states in which he'll still play.

First of all I really can't see many performers boycotting Miami. It just isn't going to happen.

Second, does anyone really care that Stevie is boycotting? Not enough people to make any real difference. He might be a legend, but money talks as JayZ and Kanye well know.

I have seen somewhere a bigger list of boycotters and the only one who really matters is justin timberlake (and the rolling stones, if oldness lets them move out of their country). The rest are smug idiots (delete that word loved by people "on the pot" and read "assholes" or something), has-beens and who-is-that.
Steve Wonder has the same political/business sight than eyesight. If he is still touring, this is ludicrous publicity for non-crackers to buy his forgotten shit to support him.

I'm not sure what fake week-day enty is smoking when he/she says:
"Although, the law was not used in the George Zimmerman trial by the defense, it was the reason police did not arrest him until weeks after the shooting and it was used in the jury instructions."

It was the basis of the entire defense strategy from the beginning. And, as we all know, it worked.

moving onto jz, I was shocked to see him at the protest as he seems to be only about the $$. remember when he trademarked the 'occupy wall street' term to put on t shirts?

greenmountaingal said...

1. Zimmerman did not invoke Stand Your Ground for his defense. He used a straight self-defense defense. So this outrage over a law that wasn't part of the trial makes no sense. I'd also venture to add that these celebrities boycotting Florida neither watched the trial nor totally understand the law. They are responding to information fed to them by the media.

2. How does Stevie Wonder even know where he is? Yes, I went there. Slam me all you want about it, but it's true.

Good, three less idiots in Florida

Topper Madison said...

Wow. What's with all the Stevie hate? Seriously.

Sasha said...

It's all about the money. Where are the rallies for gang shootings and drug violence? Would JayZ attend one of those? I think not.

What I wonder is why did the family of TM release a photo of him at age 12 to the media instead of the ones he had on twitter and facebook showing his actual age 17? Would he really want to be viewed as a 12yr old forever? I doubt it.

This case was about the dirty politics of Angela Corey, the crafty social engineering of the family attorneys- Crump and co. and the biggest racist idiots of them all, Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson. Throw in the media falling for their craftily woven, hole filled story and voila out comes this disastrous case.

Sasha said...

JayZ should take Timberlake and Stevie to Cuba with him on his next vacation and stay there!

How about Jay Z, Beyonce, Kanye and Stevie all just stay home and adore one another.

MrX22 said...

Fuck em if they boycott. Who gives a shit?!!

Justanothercommentor said...

Couldn't agree more. Sharpton and Jackson will continue to stir unrest and controversy when it comes to these types of issues, otherwise they would be out of a job.

Seachica said...

Jay-hyphen-Z will always go wherever the money is. If his fans are outraged, he will pretend to be outraged and boycott. But if his fans are in Florida, he will pretend to use his stage there as an opportunity to express his outrage. And then he'll sell t-shirts for profit, because that's his outrage too.

Meli said...

They really should google the Stand Your Ground Law and see which states actually use it before they boycott.

PS No more tours in California!

Yeah ummm since none of the cunts above this post have done shit to boycott or protest anything, I feel like all of your responses are shit.

Case in point...

What the fuck have you done T.E.? Ever in your shitty life? What should they have done with the shirt? Given it away for free? Is that what you need? Free shit? Who ever made that tshirt shouldn't get paid. And the store they sold it in shouldn't pay it's rent so you can have a tshirt for free? Get the fuck outta here? Why are you all so stupid?

Single Man...they're not stupid, they have COLLEGE EDUMACATIONZ! They are EDUCATED, you see, so they are brilliant, better than you and their opinions and thoughts are the only way! Jeez, don't you pay attention around here? Lol :)

Nobody in FL will care. Too many blacks as it is here, hopefully all the Tryavons and Shaneequas will move to Detroit, a shining example of black-run success. S. Africa is ruined, a formerly First World country that is now a dangerous, violent shit hole, like every other place on the planet with a black majority and black rule. So of COURSE we should emulate them and the actions that led them to their current sorry state! Educated geniuses and their solutions...lol. How about y'all move to S Africa and see how long you last? Better yet, you go live there and send the whites here. They know what's up, and you will too once you live in the "Rainbow Nation". Lol....assholes.

Yeah, you don't have to be blind to see that walk don't go with that talk. He wants cheap applause from the moron horde for his stupid boycott but he doesn't want to lose any $ over it.

Does anyone stop and wonder why is SYG suddenly so unpopular? It's just the Zimmerman trial and hysterical twits who do and say, without questioning, whatever their TV tells them. SYG was a possible defense for Zim that he didn't pursue at trial. Ergo, since Zim=evil, SYG=evil. Moron logic. Actually, SYG should be examined in the context of whether it is a good law objectively, not whether it is a good law because durrh Zimmerman. Maybe SYG protects women and blacks more, much more, than it hinders. Could that be possible?
Here's a fun fact: Obama (who now for political reasons wants to denigrate SYG) supported Illinois SYG statute when he was a state legislator there.

Hey Single Man, I've protested, boycotted, designed and sold t-shirts for the profit of charities and organizations, and I totally agree with T.E. Cruz. It's a bit obvious why you're still single.

The big "boycott Florida" movement is a joke. They need to perform (and rake in money) more than we need to see them perform. I wouldn't pay to see any of them anyway.

Stand your ground isn't a bad law if Grandpa kills a burglar in the middle of the night, or if a woman beaten half senseless by her husband fights back and kills him. But all that is moot because this law was not used in the Zimmerman trial, it was pure self defense.

We're all in favor of "innocent unless proven guilty" until there is a verdict we don't like. The prosecution simply did not prove their case against Zimmerman, for lack of witnesses and lack of evidence. Only two people know what happened that night, and one of them is dead.

While a tragedy, the Martin murder is certainly not unique, similar things happen every day. This case has been hyper-publicized by the media, and you even begin to wonder if it's being used to keep us upset so we don't notice the crumbling infrastructure, high costs of gasoline, unemployment, bankruptcies and foreclosures. Whatever. It's over, done. Nothing anyone can do will bring Martin back. Let's move on.

Re: stand your ground- you have to ask yourself, doni want a society where a man can get out of his car to confront you because of what he THINKS youre doing, get into a fight and kill you, or you know a more normal and safe society. Id like to see alot of this energy focused on conflict resolution skills so gun ISNT go to when someone feels " dissed"-which is nonesense anyway- and teens can talk ghings out instead if shooting.

Florida is America's wang, and staying away from FL is basically as good as it gets. Boycotting something means you don't use/attend/perform it/there, so Jay Z shows his true colors. It's like he's trying so HARD to get people to think he's aware, but he's just a fucking sell out.

brakewater said...

Largest percentage of shooting/killings (non-suicide) are done by blacks. Since blacks, ergo, are able to use SYG laws, SYG laws benefit blacks the most. Therefore, boycotting SYG = hurting black. logic, bitches. Google FBI stats yourself if you don't believe me.

And please, boycott Texas and Castle Doctrine laws next.

Please give me the statistics on how SYG benefited blacks over any other race...don't worry I'll wait. ..the majority of murders that you are referring to happen amongst young inner city youth that probably do not/ can not become a registered gun owner. It just gives power to those that do, which is oddly in favor of the gun toting majority that reside in the state.
