TMZ Is Not A Fan Of Amber Alerts

TMZ has a post up right now which is complaining about an Amber Alert which was sent out last night at 10:54pm. I got it and I think everyone who has a smart phone in California got it.TMZ seems annoyed that it happened late at night. I'm sure the kids who were kidnapped would have preferred to not get kidnapped at all, but next time will try and get kidnapped during business hours. They were also upset that the alert buzzes your phone multiple times. You know, to get your attention because kids have been f**king kidnapped. TMZ then also posted a poll wondering if other people were also annoyed about the alert and told people how to turn it off. Seriously? Let me know when one of your loved ones goes missing and then you can tell everyone how to turn it back on and how you encourage people to ignore it and disable it. F**kers.

I understand the importance of Amber Alerts, they’ve helped save lives and the information does need to get out. HOWEVER, at 10:52PM when my phone started buzzing LOUDLY and REPEATEDLY, I was not on the freeway. I was in bed, sleeping. Had I been out, on a freeway, where the information might have been of some good, it would have been AGAINST THE LAW for me to pull me phone out and read the message. That’s why CALTRANS has CHANGEABLE MESSAGE SIGNS on the freeway, instead of in my bedroom.; 9:31 AM

Also, since the alert went to all smart phones, that means the message was sent to every person who has a smart phone, including children. It wasn't much fun to have to explain Amber Alerts to my kids.; 9:37 AM

ForSure said...: Add me to the camp that wonders why your young children have smart phones, but you're worried about them learning what an Amber Alert is. Unless you are with those kids 24/7 they are probably using those phones to learn all kinds of things you know nothing about. You can get simple text/call phones for children at Best Buy in the Pay as you Go aisle. The cheapest one is about $15 and the plan is $10 a month (or you can add it to your plan after paying for one month seperately).

Anyway, that alert is part of a new nationwide alert system that is a partnership between the wireless companies and the Federal Government. It is used for severe weather/emergency alerts, national security alerts, and Amber alerts. The alerts have a distinctive ringtone and will vibrate twice. If your phone is on silent, they will vibrate twice. They are supposed to wake you up, especially if you live in tornado country and your life is in danger.

Last night's alert was sent statewide because the suspect (who had killed the mother and one child, then burned down the house they lived in before taking the older 2 children) was reported to be seen in Northern California after driving from San Diego all day.

Elissa said...: I'm with Enty on this one. I've had a baby stolen, and I can only imagine what some family is going through right now knowing that that woman is dead and her children are missing and in danger. So thousands of people were woke up; that family will not sleep for a long, long time.

Amber Alerts are there and important and actually work so when it's a choice, I choose Amber Alerts every time. Roll your ass over and go back to sleep. If these alerts are really going out to millions of California residents at a time, the vast majority of whom are hundreds of miles away from the child, then some attention to sending the right message to the right people at the right time is warranted, even if for no other reason than to keep people from getting into a habit of ignoring these alerts entirely or going out of their way to disable them.

That said I already turn off my phone while I'm asleep so its all kind of moot anyway.; 3:56 PM

angie said...: @Lola, no. I like the suggestion made by someone earlier that the alerts should be like the emergency alerts. A sound that gets your attention but doesn't scare you, not as loud combined with the flashing light on your phone and having the option to turn it off.

And since the tone and tenor of many who feel they are in the right in this post is so unnecessarily judgmental and nasty, I'm going to quote another commenter from earlier (Karrots) who succinctly addressed the problem:

Your government installs a system that sends a message to your phone whether you want it or not?
