"Defying Gravity."
It reminds me of changing EVERYthing in my life--a life that I had worked many many years to build--to move from a major city back to my rural hometown and marry my childhood friend/now husband and work with him in his small business. It was hard to admit that the life I had built wasn't working for me anyway, and it's taken three years to adjust to this slower small town life. And friends did not understand at all. But worth it.

Played during the funeral of a childhood friend when I was a teenager - she had CF and lived a lot longer than anyone expected. She died within days of her husband who also had CF.
"What's the Matter Here?" by 10,000 Maniacs. Not because of anything that happened to me, but the subject of the song is totally heartbreaking (an outsider's view of an abusive home and the victimized child). It's such a peppy song but ugh. Such a subject.

@Pink Picklegoo, I don't listen to much new country music because my car radio doesn't work so well after pulling my antennae out (it was broken and wouldn't go back in, so I had to yank it or leave it to fly around). Lady Antebellum, Luke Bryan, Josh Turner, Jake Owen, and Little Big Town are probably good to start on for current country.
For older country, you can't go wrong with Johnny Cash and Patsy Cline.
If you're looking for something a little off mainstream, I love the now defunct band Cross Canadian Ragweed. The frontman from that band, Cody Canada, is now in a band called The Departed. My husband isn't really into country, but he likes them as much as I do. They're more like Southern Rock.

That song was playing at a BBQ he had with his gorgeous fiancé right after they bought a beautiful house with this great pool and patio. His fiancé was singing it and he was watching her with so much love.
It's how I like to remember him.

It's the most peppy song about heartbreaking depression, and was popular when I was hopelessly, desperately unhappy with no power to fix it at all. That song perfectly illustrated hopelessness but also the knowledge that some time in the future, you'll pull out of it.
Over You - Miranda Lambert. Blake Sheldon wrote it for his brother who died but couldn't sing it because it was way too emotional so Miranda did it for him. Came out just before my brother died and it just really hits home.

I used to dance to this song at a popular club while I was in college, with this guy who was a pre-med major. He was extremely popular and well-loved.
He was later killed in a horrible accident while interning at a hospital. A mental patient attacked a nurse and he intervened, and died in the process.
The mental patient was released not too much later (he was fine when he took his meds, the powers that be said). He promptly went to a grocery store and killed some poor woman.
The song rarely comes on anymore, but when it does, I immediately change it. Can't stand to hear it.

After being diagnosed with cancer, and recovering, sometimes the mind wanders into very dark places.. this was the love letter song to my Husband and babies, to be played at my funeral.
"Silly Love Song" it came on someone's boom box during Senior Trip, and at first the guy was kinda shy that he had it, but the whole bus was singing it at the top of our lungs! Such a sweet time with cherished friends!
"How to save a life" OMG! kills me every time! about 9 years ago listing to Kidd in the Morning out of Dallas, he used this song as background music, while having a profile piece on a sick child for his Kids' Kids.. by the time I pulled into my driveway, total ugly cry! Body shaking ugly cry. Thankfully the child ended up being okay, but to this day, I can barely handle that song. (My middle son at the time, had a very scary illness/surgery and it really hit me hard, and close)
"Celebration" by Kool and the Gang, had that song playing when Hubby and I walked into our wedding reception!

Ave Maria and You'll Never Walk Alone (Jerry Lewis sang it at the end of the telethon). They both remind me of my grandma. We always stayed up all night to watch the telethon together. I can't stand to hear the song since she died in 1989.
Ave Maria was played at her funeral. It was her favorite song. I can still picture her standing in her kitchen, cooking, and singing the song.
It's not to hard to jerk tears out of my eyes. The worst lately is Lee Brice's "I Drive Your Truck." I really don't listen to much country, but after hearing this story on Fresh Air, I find myself wanting to hear it when I run across it on the radio. It makes me teary every time.

A Theme From A Summer Place and Do You Want to Know a Secret by the Beatles are two of my favorite pick me up songs though (they both were part of my wedding). It can't always be sad tune time.
