If the journalist "overheard" something, researched it, found it, you can not edit that, but you may have the chance to make your own statement.

Please have the decency not to reveal this. It's not okay, even though the person is no longer 8. He or she clearly still worries over whatever it is and does not want it revealed. He or she believes, probably correctly, that he or she will be judged detrimentally by his or her 8 year old conduct. So don't reveal.

My first thought is it involved in the death of a child (sibling or friend) like in Bridge to Terabithia. Can you imagine how traumatic that would be to an 8 year old, and why someone wouldn't want to talk about it even decades later? Leave her and secret be.
well, most people who give interviews just don´t really care to discuss this prior to the interview mostly because it is also in their interest to get press coverage. And basically tabloids are in general not really keeping boundaries at all.
and yes, articles and copyrights are the authors/magazine rights, but only after publishing them.

as there are rules about who is protected as "source" for information - to ensure the safety and protection from eventual blasts against them so there are rules about your content you share, because of the same reason of you being protected.
but again, with tabloids it really does not matter, since they publish all sorts of stuff and fictions anyway, without bothering themselves about anything. to be later resolved in court. eventually...

If this person is worried about reporters asking her about her "secret", it isn't really a secret then since it must be common knowledge, at least in media circles. So whatever her "secret" is, it's probably only a big deal to her and not likely to be scandalous (abuse/drugs etc). But even if it is no big deal, I can see there might be things people just do not want to talk about in public.
Wouldn't Paulina be a model first? Charlize doesn't fit the rating by FAR.
What would be brought up? If it was sexual violence, then who gets interviewed about their parents or relatives? Offspring of celebrities. If it's domestic abuse, it has to be someone related to a popular person who might be asked about.

Sorry... you're wrong on many counts here. I'm a former print journalist. In rare, very rare, instances a very well-known person can use their clout to pre-approve an interview before it is published, or get the questions beforehand but this is not the norm at all. Any journalist or publication who grants final approval to the subject is scorned and loses all credibility. They are an extension of the PR machine if they do that. I never did it.
Movie junket interviews are an entirely different beast. The entertainment reporters (most of them are not journalists) censor themselves and ask questions they know will not offend. Otherwise, the studio will not turn over the tape of the interview.
When negotiating for an interview, a lot can be asked of you beforehand with regard to what topics to avoid, or what things they would like included. I always had a very specific angle for my interviews and would share this when asking for an interview. If they wanted to participate on those terms, great. If not, oh well.
One more thing, you said that a lot of subjects never ask beforehand about the questions, approvals etc because they just want the publicity. They may not ask what the questions are, but every single person i have ever interviewed (hundreds) want a lot of details on the article before they agree to participate. They ask themselves or they have their reps do it.
What is the topic?
Where is it being published?
Will it be syndicated?
Who else is being interviewed for the article?
How many words?
Then there is some joking around when they ask if they are going to be slammed in the article - it is presented as a joke, but they are serious. They are trying to figure out if you're going to do a hatchet job on them.
Also, what you were writing about rights... rights are in place whether the article is published or not. If a piece is commissioned, generally the publisher owns the article and decides whether to syndicate it and so forth. If the writer negotiates to own the rights and syndicate it to a particular publication, then exclusivity windows are negotiated. Writers try hard to keep ownership of their work, but the trend seems to be publishers owning the article outright, and the writer cannot syndicate it. In this climate of fewer and fewer print publications, and more and more writers, writers have almost zero negotiating power.

I was going to say the same as @Unknown 5.39pm, but shorter: it is unusual for an interviewer to agree to post-edits by the interviewee. Common to enter with a general framework of what the focus of the interview is, but that's it - after that, it's almost always up to the interviewee to be verbally dextrous!
I think an obvious example of someone with a very interesting/horrendous youth is Drew Barrymore, and she manages interviews well. IIRC she's drawn interviews back onto her desired topic effectively. And good on her, she's in control of what she discusses.

Any celeb that doesn't insist on final say on interviews, has beyond shitty PR and management. I worked, briefly, with some famous folks and they parsed my every word, and basically told me nothing, and I was there to help them.

Lots of celebrities don't insist on "final say". However, there is a lot of discussion before the interview. If the interviewer makes the subject look bad, the publicist & mgmt will ensure the journalist will never get an interview with any of their other clients. I've interviewed some fairly well-known people and it wasn't really an issue with me. But I was also known for a particular style & angle with my articles, so maybe that helped.
