Don't Drink In Front Of Britney

TMZ actually had an article  found interesting and didn't mention a sports figure or a Kardashian. I know, who would have thunk. Two things stood out. Apparently for now at least the "boyfriend" is back in the picture. Maybe he worked out something that will keep him around until she heads to Vegas for the first time and then they can convince Britney that it's over. The second thing that was interesting which I have personally done many times but wasn't sure other people did is the drink before they get there game.

Britney went to dinner with friends. Britney was a little late but her friends were way early. They all met at a bar in the place and drank as many drinks as they could and then when Britney got there they never touched a drop and didn't let Britney see them touch a drop of anything stronger than sweet ice tea.

After dinner and when Britney left the group went back to the bar and went back to drinking. When I know I'm going out with someone who has drinking issues they need to address but haven't or are in recovery I have been known to get to a place early and have a few cocktails and then not touch a drop once they arrive. I find it easier. You might ask why the cocktails are even needed and it has been my experience that people who have drinking problems but aren't ready to address them might be a more difficult table companion than is normal and that a drink beforehand gets you prepared for the inevitable meltdown when they have their first several drinks.

Did Britney ever really have a huge drinking problem or is this about continuing to control Britney? (probably can't drink on all those sedating pills)

If she's an addict and fragile, her friends are doing exactly the right thing.

Yes, good for her friends.

The article says she had a major drinking problem that was N issue in her custodial hearing.

I'm just glad she has friends.

I'm glad she has some friends. And I'm glad they give a shit about her enough not to enable her. Bless that kids heart...

Dunno if y'all saw Robin Williams recently on The Daily Show, but he told the story of a fairly recent relapse after 20 years of sobriety. He saw an airplane-sized bottle of Jack Daniels in a store and told himself, "Oh, a little won't hurt."

He said the SECOND the booze touched his lips, he went wild, blackout drunk again.
He thought he was okay after 20 years sober, and was WRONG. Brit barely has what, 3 years sober? DON'T TEMPT. She is a mother, ffs.

*I should say Robin W BECAME an immediate blackout drunk all over again, after allowing himself that tiny bottle. I didn't literally mean that one taste made him black out.

Either way, I think that these were good friends trying to not even temp Brit Brit, knowing she has alcohol issues.

they did the right thing, Brit probably can't mix booze with her meds...

This makes me pretty happy. She has awesome friends. Glad they care so much about her.

OAN: I love how Enty always posts the WORST pic he can find lol

I agree -- good for her friends. At least they are spending some time with her instead of avoiding her entirely.

@Libby: I heard RW discuss it on the Daily Show and it was... I dunno... humbling? I'm not an addict or alcoholic so it's hard for me to completely empathize beyond the "idea" of it, but here I was tuning in for the LOLs and it was really striking to hear him discuss it in a humorous but very honest way. I imagine there were a lot of viewers nodding their heads in agreement and I have to respect Williams' openness about it. Especially admitting how little it took after TWO DECADES of sobriety to hurl him right back into it.

All that to say, if Britney's friends want to drink, I guess that's how you can do it and support your friend's sobriety.

I always though Robin Williams had a coke problem. Maybe it's because he's always high energy. I didn't know he was an alcoholic.

This post actually makes me happy. Britney not only has friends, but friends that care about her enough to not drink around her. Go Brit!

yeah bi-polar people are advised not to drink at all (1) because of the medication but also (2) it can trigger a mood swing or bout of depression.

Booze definitely fucks with mood stabilisers, antidepressants, anti psychotics and anti anxiety meds. Not a good combo. Also, alcohol is a depressant. Also, it's rad.

Libby that reminds me of the Simpsons ep where Barney straightens out and then drinks some champagne. Even though it's non alcoholic, he goes right off tap.

*sings* "that's what friends are for...."

I'm glad they didn't drink in front of her but don't you think she could guess they had been drinking. Why couldn't they wait until she had left?

The fact that Britney has friends that don't seem paid for makes me really, really happy. We know she had some kind of substance issue and I think it's smart for anyone who is in recovery to not be around any kind of substance at all. Even though they were in a bar, it's really considerate of them to not drink in front of her. I know a lot of people wouldn't be that thoughtful.

Sounds like she has good people around her finally. I don't drink in front of my recovering friends either. It's the right thing to do.

Among other things, the story underscores how normal and routine substance abuse is in our culture. It's just *those* people who can't drink a bottle of booze and do lines and shoot up while popping opiates and amphetamines. The rest have no problem!

@Barton Fink
Yeah, I was thinking the same thing. It sounds like the "friends" have drinking issues more than Brit Brit. How many cocktails does one need? Sounds like drunks who can't be with a dry friend.

I have a colleague who is bipolar and drinks. Her life is an ongoing freak show with bizarre relationships and high drama everywhere, which she loves to tell our ivory tower about. If she didn't have tenure, I think the college would have fired her a while back.

I love this site and Enty, but the grammar and paragraph-long sentences are making blinds and stories impossible to understand.

That said, I have several friends in recovery and I would NEVER drink in front of them whether or not they say it is ok. I know how it is when I am giving up caffeine and I see someone drinking coffee.
