Off Topic

If you don't have marshmallows for your sweet potatoes you might as well shut down your whole Thanksgiving dinner.

I don't like sweet potatoes - period. They can stay away from my Thanksgiving table for all I care.

My former mother in law made a sweetpotato casserole to die for. She put marshmellows in them too. Sinfully delicious Iis all I can say.

No place for sweet potatoes on my Thanksgiving table save them for Christmas and baked ham.

Sweet potatoes are best prepared mashed with garlic, butter, old bay, salt & pepper. I digress...

So - just did my holiday food shopping only to be greeted with a declined card (damn you Atlantic City & your hotel deposit holds!!) at the register.

Red faced, I apologized and was about to do the walk of shame out and empty handed. Instead, my cashier pulled out his wallet and swiped his own card and my groceries were paid for. He did it so quick that I couldn't even tell him thanks but no thanks.

Normally I go about my day bitching to myself about how much people suck anymore but not today. My complaints are silenced by Steve.

May Steve and all of you in CDAN land have a wonderful Thanksgiving.

No marshmellowed sweet potatoes here -- do not forbid Green Bean Casserole or the canned cranberry with the ridges.

I don't like anything on my sweet potatoes but a little bit of butter. No brown sugar or marshmallows. They are tasty the way they are!

@Dixie That is wonderful! How sweet of him.

I am attempting and failing at pie crust AGAIN.

OFF-off topic! but I thought the blog of this former paparazzi was pretty interesting. I mentioned it yesterday on here but was blown off as usual. Here a post about Miley:

Dixie - That is so awesome! What a great person to randomly pay for your food, especially a cashier as they're not exactly swimming in gold coins ala Scrooge McDuck. Pay it forward.

I live in Canada and I have never ever eaten marshmallows on a sweet potato dish. In fact I don't think I've ever even seen them. We eat sweet potatoes, but as a savory side dish, not a dessert.

Dixie - awesome story. :)

I wasn't introduced to the marshmallow and sweet potato thing until I was an adult--and I'd felt I'd been missing out on something my entire life.

I love it. Don't judge me. (It's really more like a dessert than a savory dish.)

Dixie! I am misty with emotion. How lovely.

That was nice, Dixie. Happy Thanksgiving to you!

Dixie, that is a wonderful story--yay Steve.

@Sian no offense but I literally shivered reading sweet mashed potatoes and sausages. It sounds dreadful darling like it wouldn't go together.

That is a great Holliday story. Have fun in AC.

No marshmallows! I have a recipe for pureeded sweet potatoes butter, maple syrup(the real stuff) and 1 diced jalapeno pepper. Yum!

Yay Steve! I've never heard / eaten most of the what's been mentioned here, not even so much as a green bean casserole, which to be honest sounds like the last thing I'd wanna put in a casserole. It's probably because I'm in Canada. I like sweet potatoes cut into wedges then tossed with olive oil and grilled.

How come no post about Nigella Lawson being a mental coke head? Letting her assistants spend 300k pounds on credit cards so they would keep it from her hubby, etc. Doesn't support the victim profile, so we pretend it didn't happen?

The trashing her husband took was disgusting. The "yoke up" is on the second page of Dealing With a Coke Whore 101. First page has 3 letters on it: RUN!

I love wrapping sweet potatoes in foil (with a bit of butter and cinnamon), popping them in the crock pot and letting them cook about 10 hours. Oh my God, so good...

On topic, I found out the other day my nieces don't like cranberry sauce so I needed to think of an alternative for them. (This is the first Thanksgiving since my Mom passed away so I'm making the dinner)

So I grabbed a few apples and pears, peeled and cut them into chunks. Added the juice from the pineapple I'm using for the ham, about 1/2 cup of sugar, 1/4 cup brown sugar and about 3 or 4 tablespoons of cinnamon and then let it boil for about 15 minutes and then let it simmer for about an hour. Threw the stuff in a bowl and then mashed them with a potato masher. It tastes just like an apple pie then you get the pineapple flavor. Pretty freaking good for something I just threw together with stuff I had here.

That sounds awesome, Rowdy! Sorry to hear about your mom.

Where is this about Nigella? It feels like we're starting in the middle of a conversation.

Ms. Cool: I wouldn't take it personally

Ugh, no. Marshmallows are gross, gooey crap bombs. Yams should be steamed and then baked in a sweet glaze with lots of butter.

BTW, french fried sweet potatoes are quite yummy. But you have to fry them in tallow, like proper fries.

Hi-gella is in the Daily Mail

Yams with marshmallows is such an American thing. It sounds horrible! Although I do agree that a nice glaze is lovely.

Momster said...

I love sweet potatoes in any shape or form.

I'll have to try the slpw cooker method, Rowdy. But tomorrow, I'm using it for the stuffing.

PugsterMom said...

No no no. No marshmallows.

audrey said...

I bake my yams and/or sweet potatoes in the oven. Add a little butter when they are done and they are amazing. Sometimes if I am not cooking for a lot of people I add a sweet potato (the yellow one) in with my regular potatoes.

Rutabega's anyone? My Mom loves them and it's *her staple -- yuck -- just yuck.

Yuck. Weird. To me, that sounds as appetising as a gherkin and caper cheesecake.

Unknown said...

Sweet potato like those weird grose carrot-like vegetables that taste like pumpkin when cooked?

Fuckn disgusting let alone with marshmallows/ WHAT-IN-THE-NAME-OF -FUCK - IS - WRONG -WITH - YOU??????????

As a vegan (or vagan if gay), sweet potato fucking rocks. But not w marshmallows, chocolate crackles or any other kind of revolting combo.

Yams with marshmallows isn't an American thing, it's a white American thing. You won't find too many yam dishes served with sweet potatoes in the hood.
