Off Topic

Is there supposed to be a difference between jelly, jam and preserves? Where does Apple Butter fall into the mix? Does anyone under the age of 20 like marmalade?

Marmalade is huge in Europe.

While we're off topic, has Enty written anything about Shiagate? I can't find anything on this site, but considering that Shia has been the topic of a zillion blind items over the years, I'm a bit shocked that he hasn't been all over this new scandal.

Attention to Portlanders!
Any advice on the best areas to stay in a hotel in Portland? Going in March and want to stay in a good/fun neighborhood.

Also, do I need a car or is public transportation good enough?

Thank you in advance for offering me and my husband a free place to stay. ;-) Seriously though, I'd appreciate any advice about that.

Jelly is harder to spread than jam.

Marmalade still big in England. We don't do jelly here (that's a pudding) but my 7 year old who watches way to much Nickolodeon and Disney insists on asking for peanut butter and jelly on toast. She is told she won't ever get that because we are ENGLISH and she has to ask for jam.

I live off of tea, toast and jam some days with my Crohns. Marmalade is tasty on English muffins.

Jelly is made from sugar and fruit juice while Jam is made with crushed fruit & pulp.

Its just jam and marmalade here in the uk. Jelly is what we call your jello? I used to get really confused when i heard about peanut butter and jelly sandwiches when i was little!! :D

I'm going to take the crude route because I can...

You can't jelly your dick into someone's ass.

Shia is becoming the ultimate bad boy. I stilll find him massively attractive even though he' s into really rough sex. He must be a beast in the sheets, I'll pay for a night minus the blood of course.

On topic...great brunch spot on Hawthorne...its name? JAM!

Sugar said...

Awesome, thanks Megan. I've made a note to look later. I've never done an airbnb before but I may give it a try.

Downtown is also near to the Pearl district, right? I hear that is a good neighborhood too. Do you agree?

Yep, the jelly thing in the US is weird to the rest of the world.

Preserves can be savoury as well as sweet...and are usually somewhat whole whereas jam and marmalade aren't as chunky. I think? I smush my berries with a potato masher when I make jam.

Sugar said...

I also love chutney. Is that in sort of the same category?

discoflux said...

Sugar - I guess that with the right accoutrement, one could also feasible preserve their dick in someone's ass.

Rhysie - I love you back!!

I work in the Pearl! Its neat too..great stores, restaurants etc...its just industrial as it is the regentrified industrial area...smaller trees, more concrete...I feel it lacks the originality of the rest of the city, but a perfectly good area..stay closer to burnside if you choose the Pearl..more populated...its such a cool city..spring will be pretty with all the new green sprouting and flowers! FUN!

Jelly is gelatin here with Jell-O being the biggest brand of it.

Snapdragon said...

US, anyway, from my computer's dictionary:

Jelly = "a sweet, clear, semisolid, somewhat elastic spread or preserve made from fruit juice and sugar boiled to a thick consistency."

Preserves = like jelly, only chunkier: "food made with fruit preserved in sugar, such as jam or marmalade."

Ta da.

If you haven't tried it yet, you have to try jalapeno jelly, it is awesome.

I have a recipe for my favorite jelly that my Mom used to make, but I haven't tried it since she passed away, it's cinnamon apple jelly.

Dr. Oz says hot pepper jelly is good for you, good to have on your toast or whatever first thing in the morning, kickstarts the metabolism

It also tastes good with cream cheese on a cracker. It just looks prettier than jam.

Y'all never had a jelly roll?

Shia used to be cute and talented. Now hes douchey and full of himself. Nithing less hot imho.

I love pepper jelly. I just had to climb a shelf at Savemart to reach the medium (what's the point of mild pepper jelly?) this weekend.

My friends (married couple) owns a small little cafe caked Happy Sparrow Cafe in Portland...be sure to check it out for breakfast, it's delish!! Most people don't know what kolaches are but once they have them, they like them!

MissInfo said...

Darn auto-correct! I meant to say "called" and not caked. Whatever...Sugar knows what I mean! Lol

RowdyRodimus said...

@MissInfo Did you know the human brain is wired to understand words as long as the first 2 letters and last letter are correct? It's weird but there's no reason to correct a misspelled word when auto-correct does that. I actually read it as "called" and not "caked" because of the phrasing.

Not trying to be a dick or what the media would call "Grammar Shaming" lol I just think it's a really cool thing our brains do without us even trying.

Sugar said...

I will go to Jam and the Happy Sparrow Café and eat everything!

OK…a little weird. Enty watches Dog with a Blog on Disney! I was forced to watch it yesterday with my kids, and they had a whole bit on there about the difference btwn jelly, jam and preserves. Enty, you can't be fishing for topic ideas on the Disney Channel.

PotPourri said...

Jelly is liquefied sugar and fruit juice. Preserves are fruit with a little saucy stuff.

Sugar - get a car for sure. Although its a very mass transit friendly city , neighborhoods tend to be fairly spread out and March is still very rainy - bussing/train would take an hour to get from place to place and the waiting isn't tons of fun. Definitely do air bnb and stay somewhere close in SE/Downtown. Lots and lots to do! You'll have a blast. I've lived here since I was 7 and I still love it:)

I always stay at the Heathman. Best service, excellent food, great location. The Governor is OK, was there while filming Grimm awhile ago.. The Nines has a great top deck but pribably not so much this time of year.

Thanks guys! News I can use!
