Off Topic

Wednesday is the one day a year I force down a vegetable. My mom has me convinced if I don't eat black eye peas that I will have a bad year. Once you start something it is tough to stop. It's why skipping a day of showering can be a slippery step.

Everybody should eat a plate of black eyed peas on NYD! It is good luck I had good fortune for the most part this year because I went out of my way in 1/1/13.

I for one can attest to the fact that eating black eyed peas does not guarantee you happiness in the coming year. I still do it though. Love, Debbie Downer.

sandybrook said...

Ahh Sugar I feel bad for u :(

You need to eat blackeyed peas for luck and pair it with collards for money otherwise your missing opportunity.

Sugar said...

Aww, thanks Sandy. It's okay. Life throws curve balls and I just dodge them the best I can!
Let's go under the bleachers and get through 2014 together. sexy winky face

Is Enty Southern?? I was raised on the absolute certainty that you HAD to have to have black-eyed peas and collard greens on NYD, or you'd be cursed for sure. My SoCal husband thinks I'm crazy, but I ain't taking any chances.

I always serve my peas in the form of Hoppin' John. He'll eat that, but I have to pitch a fit to get him to take a bite of collards. For almost 30 years, it's been the same fight....

Happy New year, everyone! I don't comment much, but y'all make me smile.

Kelly said...

Love my black eyed peas.

Kelly said...

@Tammy same with my Yankee hubby, Lol. Happy New Year to you too!

Violet said...

Is a black eyed pea a vegetable even? I thought it was some lentilly bean type thing?
No such tradition here - a lump of coal at midnight if you've remained sober enough to stay awake (and that's in Scotland anyway).

chopchop said...

Does it work if you listen to Black Eyed Peas? That's a sacrifice….

Orvilla Bedinbacher said...

Yeah, I ate black eyed peas for the New Year and my g-ma gave me some for my wallet. I was doing awesome until this month...
YAY! 2014 has got to be better.

I soak dried peas overnight and then after changing the water to reduce gas emissions, cook with smoked meat, dried onion flake, hot pepper flake and garlic then cook til creamy. BUT
If you want, make a soup with black eyed peas and collards as ingredients. Get that luck on a technicality!

BEP is a legume. The trick is to cook them with lots of smoked pork. What it the vegetable you eat?

dezzie disaster said...

Our tradition is eat sauerkraut on New Years day, it's supposed to bring you money in the new year...

sandybrook said...

Oh that's good to know I can eat a hot dog and sauerkraut for lunch and fish and hoppin' John for dinner and skip the stinking greens and put broccolu on the posts like I was supposed to do.

sandybrook said...

*broccoli* plate spelchek :(

Sherry said...

Yes, Steampunk. Peas are coin and greens are dollars.

My mom has it ingrained in my head:Pork for health, cabbage for money, and black-eyed peas for luck. 32 years later and I'm still doing it. And since my hubby dislikes most of that stuff, I'm adding banana creme pie for dessert since that's his favorite. Gotta make up some points I guess, haha!

Sherry said...

SandyBoo, if I may appropriate the new moniker, if you hate greens you may be a super taster. Personally I adore, nay, crave greens. Gawd I love 'em.

BEP are also awesome. I cook with a touch of baking soda to ease the farties. Then again that sometimes suffices for entertainment up at Blanc Debris. It's pretty remote here.

Steampunk Jazz said...

@Sherry, I've been raised on this so I must have twisted it. Being southern of Scot heritage it was peas for luck, collards for cash a
( and this is where I think it twisted) cornbread for coins. :-D .

I'm Pennsylvania Dutch, and our tradition is pork and sauerkraut. Hubby is southern, so his is black-eyed peas and greens. Our compromise meal for New Year's Day is rosemary dijon roast pork, butter-fried cabbage, and black-eyed peas with shallots and bacon. Oh, and of course you have to burn a real bayberry candle while the year changes! And you can't take out the garbage or do laundry on New Year's Day.

yuck all this food sounds nasty (no offense) I am looking forward to my chinese food take-out tomorrow...

DixieTheNoble82 said...

Both the bean and the musical group are fucking wretched!

sandybrook said...

ribs and sauerkraut cooked in the same pot is an awesome meal.
@Sherry my mother's family was from Teneessee and Alabama and they ate greens and turnips and horrid stuff like that all the time. Lots of it smelled and looked bad. I like my greens in salad and that is only various lettuces and spinach .

auntliddy said...

I think my family shoukd be a whole lot nicer to me. They shld adore me. Starting yesterday!!

Steampunk Jazz said...

Your alive enough to give this year the finger. As it totters out, shovel those peas! Chew those collards! Come Tuesday, that tomorrow won't be "Another day.." But a whole ' nother year.
Wave your field vegetable and make this New year yours.
Tara or bust!!!

Steampunk Jazz said...

Auntliddy I adore you now, yesterday AND tomorrow. :-)

Steampunk Jazz said...

All Northeners are included in this Y'all Make This Year Your Bitch. Just insert Northernism's where appropriate :-D ie. Shovel your brat, chew your kraut! Just...( ala spellchzech)
Carpet Diem!

I have never eaten a black eyed pea, but I hide veggies in most of the food I make as the hubs and kiddos are anti-greens. No scurvy on my watch!

Unknown said...

@TTM I just noticed you have a baked-good blog. So sweet ; )
I am never a baker (a smoker) but luv it xo

TalksTooMuch said...

Thanks! I should totally hook you up with my sis in TO, I send care packages alla time, lol. But shhhhhhh, skimpymist has a thing aboot outside blogs being mentioned, she is totally gonna kick my bum

Hammer_Girl said...

Maybe it's a Southern thing, but on New Years Day don't wash clothes (you'll wash all your luck away) and don't sweep the floors(sweep all the luck out the door). Any excuse that gets me out of woman work is worth sharing.

TalksTooMuch said...

Oooh, just thought of a tradition, I used to always say that whomever I spent NYE with I would know I would be spending the rest of the year with. That's what happened with the hubs and I!

califblondy said...

I've never had BEP even though my Father is from the south and loves them with fried okra and corn bread.

Personally, I think tacos make a woman lucky.

bellaluna said...

You use the leftover ham from Christmas, add water and onion and garlic, and black eyed peas (I prefer the fresh or frozen; dried ones you have to soak overnight and rinse.

The eyes in the peas are supposed to look forward to the New Year and bring you luck. Make collard greens and/or spinach, and that signifies wealth.

Then make cornbread from scratch in a wrought iron pan, just because it's so awesome!

Yeah, it's a family tradition. ;)

bellaluna said...

TTM - Hubs and I got engaged 13 years ago on NYE on the beach where we had our first date, and got married there 6 months later!

bellaluna said...

Sandybrook - Don't buy canned, go for the frozen or fresh. Much better.

Zeeky_Boogy_Doog said...

I'd rather eat black-eyed peas than listen to them!

Hammer_Girl - In that case I should wash ALL the clothes on NYD! All my luck is bad luck. Anybody know where I can rent a tornado? I'm gonna need something way stronger than a broom... :D

Hammer_Girl said...

I got a kid who could have it demo'd for you in under an hour, just give her some M&M's and a juice box.
However, I can't promise the walls will be standing when she leaves.

anon said...

I'm from NY and I had never even heard about the BEP thing before I met my hubby (TX/VA) so I get them for him and I eat one like a pill - I hate legumes!

Alita said...

Mystified - just had to Google this eating of specific foods for NY concept. Never heard of it before, not from the US or any other country. So I gather you guys are hoarding the NY luck to yourselves ... gnash! Explains a lot about some unlucky things in 2013 though ...

OKay said...

Not eating blackeyed peas or collard greens, not no way, not no how. I will happily eat sauerkraut, however!

Sherry said...

Maybe I twisted it but also Southern Scot with some Northern Irish on Dads side. NC girl like Reno and I think Meanie is also in NC.

PotPourri said...

Throw in some jalapenos and they totally will go down decently.

Bubbles said...

Alita, so you're not from the US or any other country? So are you an extraterrestrial? If so please submit photo to enty so he can end the mystery once and for all.

And on a serious note, this is so cool that so many people know about this tradition. I had no idea it was an American thing, I thought it was either just a Black oe southern tradition.

Have my BEP's soaking, but use smoked turkey necks or wings. Today it's wings. Need to start chopping my onions, peppers, etc so I can put everything in the crockpot before I hit the town tonight, which in my case is a private party a Paris.

Bon Nouvelle Annee a Tous!
