Teen Mom Leah Messer Says Her Daughter Has Muscular Dystrophy

Anyone who has watched Teen Mom, and everyone who read this knows I do has always wondered what exactly was wrong with Leah Messer's daughter Aliannah. We watched her struggle while her twin sister progressed normally. In an interview with In Touch, Leah says her daughter has Muscular Dystrophy and will be confined at some point to a wheelchair for the rest of her life.

"We were scared because we didn’t know what her future was going to look like, but we always pushed for answers."

Leah says that as Ali gains more weight her body won't be able to carry the weight and she will have to be in a wheelchair. I think it's great that she finally opened up and shared the reason for the slower progress compared to her sister and hopefully that annual Labor Day telethon will finally come up with a cure for the disease.

Poor baby. Makes it worse she has a piece of shit for a mother.

With all the experts they took that child to, you'd think muscular dystrophy would be something they would have been able to diagnose way back. Surprised it took this long.

I have a delayed darling born about a year after Ali. I wish more celebrities were upfront and vocal about kids with special needs. I fell in love with Colin Farrell all over again after he told the world about his son with Angelman Syndrome.

It was probably just one of the last things the doctors suspected. Males are the ones predominately effected by MD. The reason being is that the genetic mutation that causes MD is located on the X chromosome. Since females have 2 Xs, the body deactivates the mutated one and expresses the normal one. It still makes females carriers of the disorder, but they are rarely effected by it with mild to no symptoms. In other words - this is a rare case.

Thanks, Jerri. Learned something new today.

Wow, Jerri, that was incredibly informative. Thank you.

You're welcome. A good friend of mine lost one of her sons to MD (he had the most severe type).

Leah is selfish and stupid. I could never sit there and deem my son's future as "not looking so damn bright." It is disgraceful of her to talk about her child that way, you can speak life or death with your tongue. (I'm not normally so serious, but as a mom and a Christian - it hit a major chord with me)

I also wondered that took her two seasons to realize something was wrong. Her daughter's legs were severely turned. It was like Leah was surprised to realize that.

I actually watched part of last night's episode (got suckered in while flipping through the channels) and Leah did say this was a super rare form of MD.

But you could tell in the conversation she was having with her "friend" that she doesn't really WANT to parent a child with special needs. I try not to be too judgey when it's a situation I've never been in, but seriously...show some love.

Leah has a daughter with her new husband; her ex-husband is also getting married, and his fiance is knocked up. Teen Mom is a puppy mill.

@Cornbread, I have not yet seen last night's episode but do have it taped. I have, however, have seen all the TMs she has been on since the beginning. She has always showed more love and attention to the special needs child than the other one. That has always bothered me. If you have more than one child, show them love equally. She is always holding and doting on the one with MD while the other one just kind of walks around.

What is wrong with you people. I have not seen one instance of leah being a bad mom. Just because she sucked as a wife to corey doesn't mean she carried over that attitude to her daughters. Also @cornbread your completely wrong. Leah looked more scared than unsympathetic about her daughters future. What parent isn't scared of what the future holds for their special needs child. Shame on all of you.

Please don't judge a special needs parent unless you are one.

None of us choose the life we end up with, and none of us choose to raise special needs children.

@skimp...exactly. A shitty spouse does not equal a shitty parent. She was a bad wife to Corey but she is a good mom to those girls. I still don't agree with her getting married and knocked up so soon but it is her life. Having kids and getting married young seems like the norm where they lived anyway.

The telethons don't air anymore.

I think Leah is an awesome mom and Corey an awesome dad. They're mature beyond their years. They co-parent better than most parents twice their age.

As someone who was born with special needs I think I am qualified to say this. Leah's attitude toward her daughter with MD will only end in disaster and foster deep seeded resentment her other daughter. She shouldn't be talking about how her daughter won't have a good life or coddle her all the time because that will only set her up for failure, and make her sister resent her because she gets all the attention. She will need some extra TLC because the world in general is an evil, judgmental place, but she should encourage BOTH her daughters to reach for the stars

@saintsfan

My dad had neck pain for months. The docs thought it was Mysitina Gravis, then a vertebra sprain. Then after a muscle biopsy, it found Lou Gehrig's disease. Sometimes it takes months or years of missed diagnosis for find MD. And when it happens the family is devastated.

The only good thing is that my dad only suffered 6 months before the Lord called him home in 2000.

Let's just all say a prayer that at least she isn't Jenelle. OR Amber.

You said it Skimpymist! I think so many people attack these teen moms because they had sex. They NEVER attack the often negletful and or abusive teen dads on the show.
