Worst food poisoning you ever had. Have you eaten that type of food since?

Does alcohol poisoning count?

Kraft Mac 'n Cheese--in the five years or so that followed, I maybe had it twice.

The one and only time I ever visited a Carl's Jr. I blame Wonky McValtrax.

White fucking Castle, Port Huron, MI, 1981. I didn't really want it, but it was the only thing open. I ended up so sick. I still gag when I see the logo still.

I got food poisoning from some grocery outlet frozen hamburger just after I had gotten off antibiotics for bronchitis. It was so bad I developed IBS that lasted for two awesome years. Straightened it out with probiotics.

Chinese food and no, never again..

Bad clams in Venice, and I had to travel by train on a crazyt day of travel in Italy, Easter.

And yes, I still eat clams, love them.

ninotchka said...

Fried eggs. Took a couple of bites and 30 seconds later I was violently ill and then sick as a dog for a few days. After that, in a cake or something - fine. On their own I wouldn't touch eggs for more than ten years.

Then there was the Southern Comfort episode but that wasn't exactly poisoning. Or food.

Michael H said...

Never eat frozen hamburger--but I already knew that from working in a meat room when I was a kid. They use the worst grey meat for it. The butchers called it the "shit grind"...

Unknown said...

Taco bell, and of course I went back, different location though lol

sandybrook said...

@Rhysie you are supposed to wind up sitting on a toilet after eating 10 or 12 White Castle bombs. BUT you aren't supposed to eat there until after closing time and nothing else is open.

Bacon Bits - 1982. Not once since.

Had it twice.

Once on fried chicken at a Disney World resort restaurant in 1997

Second time was after...holy cow fried chicken at Disney World resort restaurant in 2004...

I seriously didn't think about the similarity until just now.

I was violently ill once after eating pumpkin pie. It's hard to know whether it was food poisoning, a stomach bug or just a plain old reaction to the violent crime against decent food stuffs that is pumpkin pie.

Meanie Rhysie said...

First and last time, Sandybrook!! That stuff is nasty! And, to get sick after eating it: insult to injury!

I don't understand the appeal of that crap. I'd rather eat can cat food. I'm serious. lol

Worst actual food poisoning: cheap sushi. Still love sushi, just pay for quality now

Worst what I initially thought was food poisoning: Burst appendix. Really glad I don't have a second one of those

@ninotchka: 20 + years later and I still can't stand the smell of Southern Comfort

About 20 years ago or so, I got food poisoning from under cooked grilled chicken. I've eaten chicken since and have had no problems, but I'm crazy paranoid when I cook chicken at home. I usually dry it out!

Im still not sure till this day if it was food poisoning or the flu but its when I was consulting and in the process of packing allmyself to get to the airport and fly home. I was puking so much I couldnt pack anymore and very weak also... Long story short, couldnt fly and stayed in the hotel bed all weekend long

Pizza from a place in the East Village. Ended up with E. Coli. Luckily, I lost a lot of weight. Unluckily, I couldn't even keep water down.

Sloppy Joe's at a campground we were staying it. I was the only one that got sick, but I was sick enough for all of us. Won't ever eat them again.

@charlie I have a similar inability to stomach Malibu after an 'incident' as a student some years back. In fact all things coconut have had to go on the back burner.

All inclusive resort in Mexico. .. don't know what I ate but I told my husband go to the front and see if there is a doctor. ..I was literally that violently ill

Lil P said...

Whippy and by that I mean soft serve ice cream was at an all inclusive resort & went off site. Didn't even occur to me that dairy would be processed differently than back home. ( you do remember only drink bottled water!). Had to fly back in 2 days and thought the agony was never going to end. How could I manage to get on a plane and hog and destroy the toilet I was worried but luckily it stopped just in time. Now I will not eat anything of the sort while I am away.

Carrot Soup in Antigua. So sick. So unbelievably sick. Fevered and hallucinating. Remained sick for weeks after too. I ate carrot soup again, but I will never go back to Antigua.

Time Magazine calls the White Castle slider the "Most Influential Burger Of All Time" @Rhysie :)
(Because they are the first fast food empire)

Manhattan Clam Chowder from Union Square Cafe in 1998. NEVER eaten that soup or at the Union Square Cafe ever again. And I was an NYC local.

Swordfish, viciously sick. But yes I still eat it.

The Manor in North Jersey. My secretary had been raving about the place, so I went with a group of ladies from work one Saturday night for the $25 buffet. All the lobster you can eat, right? Well, they leave that lobster out on a table for hours and it's friggin' LUKEWARM. Get the picture? Plus massive amounts of anisette shots. I spent Sunday morning praying to Saint Theresa because I knew God was busy working. By Monday, when I went back to work I was still sicker than a dog. My boss took one look at me and asked if the dog died.

Turkish Taffy said...

And I will never do buffet or salad bars again. At this point in my life, I don't even eat out anymore. I stopped after I saw the sandwich guy in my neighborhood on his break picking his toejam. Seriously.

Count Jerkula said...

Sour/skunked beer from a dirty tap. I had hallucinations better than any acid I ever took. Totally shit myself while puking in the bath tub. Why was I puking in the bath tub? Because I was sitting on the toilet when the urge to puke came on, and I wasn't putting my face near that horror emanating from the bowl. From about 11:30 at night to 6:30 in the morning I was waking up every 45 minutes to puke or poop or both. Never got tap beer in that joint again.

Bunky Burgers at O'Hare airport.

I was with my high school Spanish Club on our way back to Michigan from Mexico. 16 of us were sick, but didn't want to tell our parents because we all thought we had alcohol poisoning from partying crazy hard our last night. It took us two weeks to figure it out and get to the doctor.

I ate Alice Springs chicken at an Outback about 10 years ago. Exorcist looking bile. I have never been back to one since.

Sarah said...

One Christmas in the 80s my gay uncle did the cooking and instead of traditional fare served lots of trendy hors d'oeuvres.
The Swedish meatballs were the belle of the ball, which was unfortunate, as they sent everyone running for the loo within an hour.
The whole family was in, so there weren't enough bathrooms to accommodate everyone, I think I ran outside to vomit in the snow.
I have no interest in eating meatballs ever again.

Not sure if it was oysters or something else but after a weekend of eating 4 dozen the size of hamburgers, I had some horrid lower g.I. issue that lasted months! Adore oysters still.

Worst was first night in Paris where I had some pasta that had me vomiting all night long much to the chagrin of our hosts. Was sick.in bed for the next 4 days and literally.missed all the beauty of the city.

Seven of Eleven said...

@Sass, I have never eaten at Outback (blooming onion? Gross!) but I have made Alice Springs chicken with this recipe. It does look horrible, but everyone said it was better than the restaurant's version. Mushrooms, bacon, mustard, yum! (I halved the amount of cheese, though. Chicken shouldn't be slippery.)

Egg salad sandwich from 7-11. I know, I'm an idiot. VIOLENT vomiting, diarreah and a massive headache that felt like the top of my head was gonna blow off. NEVER AGAIN!!!

That would be the time I discovered I'm allergic to olives ... throat swelled up; body was covered in the worst hive-type spots that appeared out of nowhere; body was pulsating; was covered in sweat and couldn't talk ... thankfully someone - who was allergic to mushrooms - found me writhring around a corridor at work, recognised the symptoms and called an ambulance. And no, I've never touched them again. But the irony is, we have an income-generating olive grove here at home! LOL ...

Sass71 said...

Thank you @Seven, I will try that!

Guess I'm lucky that I've never had food poisoning. Either luck or I have an iron stomach.

Gyros from a Coney Island place in Ann Arbor, had to go to the hospital. Delirious and totally gross.

Aside from that, after a bender in college I can't even smell Gin without wanting to hurl.

Trader Joe's frozen pizza. Still can't even walk into the store.

I've just had regular food poisoning from eating rotten/expired food( vomiting and diarrhrea) but my cousin had it really bad from the food at a Chinese wedding; he had it so bad he had to go to the hospital and be on IV fluids!

A now closed middle eastern place. I went for dinner on a Saturday night. Middle of the night, throwing up wishing for death. Sunday, even worse, but nothing left in. I went to work on Sunday, and looked like death. My employees actually sent me home. They thought I was going to die on them. I had a minor ear infection at the time that decided to spread to my sinus, then throat, then lungs. Then kidneys. I couldn't eat or drink. Fever spiked to 105f. By Tuesday, I was in the hospital. I actually don't remember going. Just remember going to bed on Monday night, and bits and pieces til Thursday.

Hot wings in Burbank - since then I've only had them when I make them myself.

Also had a bad bout with a McDLT back in high school. The hot side was hot, but the cold side was not so cold. Only eat McNuggets (I know) or an Egg McMuffin if I have no choice other than McDonalds.

Tequila and I had a rough patch in college. Now I can only have the occasional margarita, and only with the good stuff (no Cuervo). Can't really even stand the smell.

La Minette Grincheuse said...

Oh yes, I also got mono from an unwashed fork at a fancy restaurant at the Bellagio in Vegas. Lovely memories...

Zeeky_Boogy_Doog said...

Never had food poisoning! :D

No, that's not exactly true... I have severe IBS, which means everything I eat turns into food poisoning.

A couple years ago, I FINALLY!!! got it mostly under control, but it took so many hard drugs that I'm fairly certain I personally kept the economy of Afghanistan afloat for the past 20 years.

Seachica said...

Tzimmes at a fancy Passover dinner. And no - not only won't I eat tzimmes; I won't eat it's main ingredient (cooked carrots)

Zeeky_Boogy_Doog said...

Stepforded - Sometimes that happens, you become allergic to things the more you're around them. Like beekeepers, the more they get stung, the more sensitive they get to it over time.

A friend of mine grew up in Arizona, US desert, and has completely different allergies than people around here; hers are all things found in AZ.

Carne Adovada that I (under)cooked myself. Ended up in the hospital. And all that red chile sauce really burns when it comes back up. Haven't gone near it since.

Not technically food poisoning but I got norovirus after visiting my mother in hospital.

I was extraordinarily grateful the the people who designed my bathroom put the sink so close to the toilet. : (

Sushi in Myrtle Beach. Was in a van and had to stop every five minutes to vomit. Took me 15 years to eat sushi again.

Ethiopian food! I really thought my life was ending for 2 days. And I have eaten it again because my SO is Ethiopian, I have no choice LOL

They are supposed to be the best burger place in Los Angeles, but the last two times I got food poisoning was from an In N Out Burger. After the first time, I swore I would never eat there again. But about a year later I was craving their fries (which are the best I've ever eaten), so I decided to give them another try. Bad idea! I got food poisoning again. I guarantee I will never go back. But I don't have problems eating burgers at other places.

Count Jerkula said...

Not food poisoning, but I was in the kitchen of a Turkish restaurant, and the cook gave me a pinch of meat and said to try it. I asked what it was and he said it was raw beef or lamb, I forget. He said you eat it raw, and the spices cook it in your stomach. He was a nice guy, and I didn't want to insult him by refusing, so I ate it. It didn't taste bad, but was the first thing I ate since breakfast, about 10hrs before. It was about the worst heartburn I ever had.

Anonymous said...

@Count, LOL! Skunky beer cleanse!

@Violet, same Malibu aversion here, for the same reason. When I was buying the bottle I had to ask for help because it was on a higher shelf. I wish I'd just walked away...

I was 18 and in a new city and going thru hell as it was. Ate pizza from a fast food Italian chain that I hope goes out of business, absolutely hate them. I got botulism because they used expired spoiled tomato sauce in the pizza. It took me years before I could eat pizza again, and then it was because I made it myself. Very rarely did I order pizza to my house, even though I didn't get food provisioning again. The one good thing about being diagnosed with celiac disease a few years ago is that I never can eat in a restaurant again. If it's not made by me or my mom I don't eat it.
I wouldn't wish food poisoning on even Blohan. It was a nightmare, and traumatized me for years. I'm almost 40 and I still remember how terrifying it was like it was yesterday.

Janet296 said...

There are two types of people in the world...those who have had food poison and those who haven't. I was 17 years old. It was a bit late so I stopped at this convenient store that was also a deli. I was buy a BBQ sandwich when the guy at the register gave me the sandwich for free. I ate it and it tasted fine. About two hours later I had projectile vomiting. I threw up 15 times! My mother ran in to see what was wrong and witnessed me throwing up. I drank some water before my mother got the chance to tell me not to do it. I then threw up 15 more times. No, I have had a BBQ sandwich ever since that night. That was 27 years ago.

I got salmonella from what I thought was chicken fingers but that shit must have been undercooked or mishandled in some way because I've never been sicker. Puked almost every ten minutes, had to sleep by the toilet because I was too weak to move. I seriously thought that I was going to die. And fuck no I'd never eat that shit again.

Krissie said...

I got massive food poisoning from the disgusting "pizza" at Chuck E Cheese when I was six. I was so sick I refused to eat pizza for over a year, even if it was from a place other than Chuck E Cheese.

I haven't had food poisoning since then but I'm sure it's only a matter of time since I do eat out about once a week.

Spoiled, sun-rotted Mayo as a child. I haven't gone near it since. Blue cheese. Tried it once; got super sick. Can't even stand the remote smell. Will. not. Take a bite of food that has touched it briefly. The perfume of it invokes gag reflexes. That'd be it.

Las Vegas, the Aladdin Hotel. A turkey sandwich with mayo. Must have been the mayo. Thought i was dying.

It took a few years before i would touch mayo again

i got it at my rehearsal dinner for my wedding from a salad. so did my grandmother and aunt. mine was way worse because i had a couple of glasses of red wine that night. i was in the hospital spewing until two hours before the ceremony began.

the er doctors saved my wedding! they put the two ivs i needed up to the ceiling so i could rush out of there. i froze my butt off in the warm july california sun because of the ivs, but i made it to my wedding. i survived the day (no food or cake but i did rally for a shot with my husband!!!) and so did my grandmother's dress.

still hate that place but i still eat salad.

Bad Chinese food :-(

I thought they cooked it fresh on a Monday, but apparently at this place I went to, they recycle what didn't get sold on Saturday for Monday and Tuesday, then cook a new batch up mid-week. To keep it looking fresh and glossy they pile all the food up with MSG and food colouring.

Never again :-(
