"I Don't Like Goodbyes. NBC Does." - Jay Leno Tapes Final Show

After 22 years and one previously attempted exit, NBC has finally shown Jay Leno the door. When he first ascended to the Tonight Show throne he did so in a very messy fashion and when he originally left in 2009 that was also messy. This time it was more of a spill as Jay admitted last week that it wasn't his decision to leave and he was being pushed out but that he won't be back. Last night he teared up a bit but I felt like he just did the whole last week of shows thing so who do you ask the second time you do it? I actually thought Sandra Bullock on Wednesday was the best last week guest he had. Jay will probably end up on some network like Fox and competing against everyone else. Conan just hopes it's not TBS but I think Jay is a network or nothing kind of guy.

Good riddance Jay please stay away….

I hope someone is paying you troll because if you're doing this for free and broadcasting to the world how fucking pathetic and stupid you are for absolutely nothing youre a complete idiot.

Anyone watch Kimmel last night? Matt Damon is a good sport

Meanie Rhysie said...

G'morn, Bruce! How are you this fine day?

sandybrook said...

Anyway TV is a cruel business and getting old on it isn't a good thing. He went out at the top of his field and probably wont be gone for long. He knew the writing was on the wall the first time they replaced him.

TalksTooMuch said...

LOL I still love Brucie

Good riddance indeed.

Henriette said...

NBC was so scared Leno wouldn't go they dismantled his set and moved The Tonight Show back to New York. Johnny Carson was much classier when he left his one and ONLY departure.

TalksTooMuch said...

Jeebus, sandybrook, what's the matter? Are you having a bad morning??

Kourtney Kardashian said...

Kim did a great job last night!

Lighten up sandy. If ya don't like it, scroll past and ignore. No ones forcing you to read every single comment.

Bruce Jenner said...

I'm so proud of Kimmy's performance last night!

Henriette said...

Leno said the dumbest thing about his show being "union." Excuse me, all NBC shows are "union." It's not like it's Walmart. He sounded like he had saved the car business in Detroit.

urban chaos said...

Kim needs to stop wearing white- she's fooling exactly no one! And they no talent 'singing' made my dog howl.

sandybrook said...

Im not reading every single comment when I first started typing that the troll's comment was the only one there. And if there's 12 comments and 10 are the troll's you have a lot of scrolling to do.

Meanie Rhysie said...

Your true colors showing, @sandybrooke, and it ain't pretty.

Henriette said...

I felt really bad for Billy Crystal because this was his second "goodbye" to Jay. At least Bette Midler only had to do it once for Johnny Carson.

Meanie Rhysie said...

*are showing

sandybrook said...

and good morning @TTM. Maybe this was a bit fun over the weekend but its quite tiresome now, Rhysie. Today is only 2/7.

Hi Bruce and Kourt! So proud of Joje! I <3 my family!

Bruce Jenner said...

I've always liked Billy Crystal. Forget Paris is one of my favorite movies.

Bruce Jenner said...

Hi Kourtney and Khloe!

@Henriette, I've got to disagree with you on this one. Lots of media production these days is non-union; Jay was trying to tell the people he payed (high) union wages and followed union rules about hours, job protection, etc.. In this economy, unions need any positive press they can get.

TalksTooMuch said...

Morning, sandy, you just seem really angry. But it's Friday! Let's have a good end of the week

Haven't watched for years, but it was time for Jay to go. Enough with the references to the O.J. trial, which was, what? 20 years ago. Even Jay's set was out of date.

Johnny Carson was the same at the end - his jokes about celebrities no one under 30 could identify (Rudy Vallee was a perennial) and those terrible faded gold-and-avocado curtains he used to come through. And the golf swing. A generation gone by.

I know I've plugged this book before, but let me plug it again: Henry Bushkin's story of his life with Johnny Carson is excellent. And very, very sad.

I'm not really angry @TTM it IS Friday after all. Eventually it will be 5 o'clock somewhere.

obviously PMK hired the trolls to protest KFF, or Enty had to come up with a cleaver way to post about them everyday.

loopymommy said...

Did anyone else think that Billy Crystal's "monologue" was awkward? He stood in front of the camera rather than sit with Jay, even though the majority of his speech was addressing Jay personally. Why talk to the camera when the person you're addressing is right behind you? Weird. Very impersonal.

Henriette said...

@NuttyFlavor
Yeah, there are lot of non-union jobs, but all of NBC's shows are union such as Late Night and SNL. Leno was not doing anything special, that was NBC before AND after him.

Unknown said...

Somewhere in America - or maybe not even in America - is the 19-year-old comedian who will be pushing Fallon out of the Tonight Show chair in 2034.

Perhaps this future Tonight Show host will not be white and male.

Henriette said...

@NuttyFlavor
Leno got a lot of flack for making that union comment too.

@loopymommy
I think Billy Crystal was just afraid he would have to do it again. Amazingly, I didn't get a lot of warmth from Crystal towards Leno.

ViciousVivian said...

ITA that the trolls must be on somebody's payroll. Nobody has this much time to waste for free.

Good riddance.

Now! said...

@Henriette, it could be that the majority agrees with you. I can just say that as a small business owner, it's always a balance between trying to pay the bills and make a (tiny, in my case) profit and make sure that the people who work for you are being taken care of. Lots of business owners focus on the former and downplay the latter. Jay, on other hand, has taken a pay cut in order avoid layoffs among his team. Granted, he's making tons of money and probably doesn't need more....but when was the last time you saw the head of Citibank doing the same thing? I give him credit for trying to take care of his people. I understand that NBC in general does the same thing...but the hegemony of the broadcast networks is dying, and lots of low-paid, non-union work is emerging in its place.

Steampunk Jazz said...

Hopefully, Jay will now be able to enjoy his millions but I doubt it. He strikes me as a guy who needs a job as a reason to get up in the morning. I hope he finds a new purpose.

sandybrook said...

Steampunk he's coming to do comedy shows in Florida over the weekend already. West coast side.

Henriette said...

@NuttyFlavor
I understand your points, but Leno is taking credit for something he has no part in. That's like me saying, "I always hired union and proud of it." Yet A)I don't own the company B)I have nothing to do with the contracts or the workers being hired C)I did not pay the workers.
Now Leno did pay for his writers during their strike, but that was after he saw Conan and Jon Stewart doing it.

Henriette said...

Oh and Letterman paid for his writers during the strike too.

loopymommy said...

@Henriette, I also hope he never has to do it again. Not fun to watch.

I was watching the Wendy Williams rebroadcast on BET, but I clicked over and saw the Charlie Sheen bit. He could barely open his eyes. It was so uncomfortable. How does this jackass keep getting work?!

Well, Jay Leno is number 1 in the ratings, so why NBC would get rid of him other than his age is beyond me. Late night talk shows are not my thang, but he clearly was great at it. Why does everybody hate on him?!?!

Anyway, I do love Jimmy Fallon when I catch him. I'm sure his show will rock. And, it's cool that it's moving to NYC. Maybe I'll go up there and watch a show live. Although, I prefer Wendy Williams. What can I say, I'm a sucker for gossip.

Henriette said...

@loopymom
I know. It all looked painful.

Paint Chips said...

I love Wendy too, Susan.

I never watched Jay, I'm sure partly because Howard is usually hating on him. I'm excited to see Seth Meyer's show and will probably watch Kimmel's show now and then.

Susan said...

I like Jimmy Kimmel, too.

Honestly, the only time I really watch these programs is when I'm down the shore in the summer at my in-laws house. They are always watching late night. And they're pushing 70. LOL.

There are so many choices for this kind of show now. I would take Fallon or Kimmel over Jon Stewart right now. He's too smug for his own good.

Kim Kardashian said...

Did everyone love me on Leno last night?

Steampunk Jazz said...

That should be a leg slapper.. Do you think the TS writers will let him use their material? I doubt he has written a joke solo in a long time, let alone a whole act.

Kimba said...

Jay is as exciting as watching Paint Chips dry......sorry @ , too easy!
I stopped watching the late night shows ten+ years ago when he and Dave's egos couldn't get thru the doors - I'm more of a Letterman fan, loosely - I was a kid with Carson and Dave/Leno are both older than me and never had much relevance to their humour. Definitely time for both to beat it. I'll check out Fallon & Meyers - finally comedians in my age bracket - good move on network parts.

KhloeK said...

Keeks! You were so inspiring!

Kim Kardashian said...

Thanks, Kokes!

Rob Kardashian said...

You did a great job, Kim.

Look for Jay to have a new show on CNN , now being run by Jeff Zucker (?), formerly of NBC - the brainiac behind putting Leno on every weeknight during primetime & man behind booting Cohan to reinstall Leno. Since Zucker is in the process of destroying CNN by making it an "entertainment channel," I'm sure a Jay Leno show will fit right in.

surfer said...

I'm glad he's gone, finally (hopefully?).

I have no idea how he managed to stay #1 - I don't know anyone who watches him, but clearly, he appealed to a certain demographic.

Lotta - I caught the end of Kimmel - that was pretty funny.

Sillygurl said...

That was way harsh Tai.

AKM said...

@sandybrook - I'm tired of it, too. Like you said, there's too much to scroll past. I didn't want to say anything because, hey, don't feed the troll, but I'm not sorry that you did.

NBC has had shows film in Mexico - Non-union.
Dracula [just cancelled] was filmed in Eastern Europe - Non-union

lazyday603 said...

Did CNN ever replace Larry King? Leno has reached that geezer age & could probably keep that gig until he dies.

it took forever said...

I LOVE Jay leno, he got a lot of shit thrown at him and still came out on top! #1 in this cutthroat showbiz is a hella achievement. Sorry to see you go Jay.

Lisa said...

Jimmy Fallon irritates the hell out of me so I won't be watching him at all.

Henriette said...

@BeccaParker
Those are shows that air on NBC and brought by NBC, except for Dracula which was a collaboration. The Tonight Show, Late Night, SNL, and all those news shows are produced by NBC, so they are union. NBC does not have to be union for the shows it buys.

Sandy said...

Don't let the studio door hit you on your way out, Leno. This exit is at least 8 or 9 years overdue. He's a total dick too, so buh-bye, unfunny, irrelevant Leno - have fun playing with your totally undeserved gajillions, guy.

danielabonchic said...

Totally agree with you, I want them gone too. Why do I have to do all this scrolling, past these stupid trolls, past personal comments not related to the blind, etc? It's annoying.
