Alicia Silverstone Hates Vaccines - Treats Son Like A Dog

Alicia Silverstone has had trouble finding successful work as an actress so became an author. In her latest book she tells the world that she is anti-vaccine. She admits there is no scientific evidence to back up her position but feels that anecdotal evidence is good enough for her and that no one should be vaccinating their children. Obviously, then from her insight into the anecdotal world she should have seen what happened to Jenny McCarthy after she made similar thoughts public. Alicia's book could have been changed when Kristin Cavallari got slammed for what she said about vaccines, but I guess Alicia decided to go through with it. Not a smart move. She makes a lot of ridiculous claims in her book and reading the her book reviews are a great way to spend a few hours of your day. Alicia says that her baby was potty trained by the age of six months because she would rush him to the backyard when he showed any signs of having to go. Does she not have a bathroom in the house? Why rush him outside? Apparently he must be part dog. In my opinion, that is the way you potty train a dog. Did her son want to go outside every time he had to go to the bathroom? At six months did he scoot himself over to a sliding glass door and bang on it? Is he still forced to use the backyard as his toilet? Alicia said that a vegan diet will guard against post partum depression. No scientific evidence but it is what she believes. She says that tampons will make you infertile and fill you with chemicals and pesticides because the cotton in them is not organic.

I'm not a huge fan of vaccinations, but who would look to her for medical advice?

She's clearly an unappreciated genius.

That was way harsh, Enty.

An actress giving child-rearing advice and opinions on scientific research, why that's just crazy! It's as though a probate lawyer started a blog aboot celebrities and their crazy doings! Madness! Next thing you know, George Clooney will be engaged.

End of days, people!!

Much of what she says sounds 'out there' - at least from the way Enty describes it, and presumably Enty has absolutely no bias and is describing her book verbatim.

That said 'elimination communication' is a fairly well known and well used technique and does not mean you're treating your child like a dog. Back in the day most children were potty trained by the age of 12/18 months. This leaving it until the child is ready business is very much a modern thing (disclaimer: my kids were trained by the age of 2.5 and i did not use EC)

She's still an ass.

Tampons ftw!

Her child must have been crawling/walking at an extremely early age, to be able to actually get to a toilet. Every child is different, but I find this extremely hard to believe.

If you think buyers/readers of her book suffered, imagine the poor ghost writer and editor who had to distill all her random thoughts into something on paper. Actors and actresses are not my go to sources for lifestyle advice.

Leekalicious said...

They're trained (using an actual flush toilet) when they're trained. Having human waste soaking into your aquifer isn't healthy either, Alicia. Encouraging a child to go to the can outdoors is only going to confuse them. Not vaccinating your child is dangerous, for the child and other people. They definitely need to work on the number and purity of the vaccines, but not stop giving them altogether. Diseases don't care if you're rich and famous or not.

Ok I did EC and baby e was potty trained by 16 months. I did NOT take him outside at all. I just held him over the potty when he had to go. Easy Peasy no big deal. He's my 3rd and the first I ever tried this with. I can say I was amazed at how simple it was. No going to the potty ever 40 minutes with a screaming child. We started this when he was 4 mo and it was an easy transition. No fear of the big porcelain poo eater.

Good point, Mark.

I just think about Alicia as Cher in Clueless and then all is right in the world.

One of my sisters or a friend gave me a Jenny McCarthy book when I was knocked up. Pregnancy and parenting books are the worst.

Potty training outside. Hmmm. Whatevs. I get a C-minus right now in potty training. I don't want to talk about.

More interestingly is Alicia Silverstone's lack of a career. What happened there? Any inside scoop.

Now off to read about Clooney. A day late, but hopefully not a dollar short.

Oh brother. Your baby isn't "potty-trained" if you take it to the bathroom everytime it starts going potty. YOU'RE trained. If you're anti-vaccine, just look at the recently eradicated diseases that are now popping up again in alarming numbers in populations where a large number have forgone vaccines.

Leekalicious said...

@Hey Dallas Alice!!

Kelly said...

I've read they're not really trained at that young a age, it's just the parent being hyper aware of the baby's pee and poop. Physically a kid can't control their bowels until 18-24 months.

Good morning Leeky :-)

I let my son semi-dictate the rate at which he was potty trained. He's my first, and only (IVF miracle baby), and it was a relatively stress-free process.

Dallas Alice said...

And he gets all of the recommended vaccines. My pedi has been very respectful of my desire to space them out. Five shots at one visit? NO.

As someone who has Crohn's disease, I have to take meds that weaken my immune system. I must rely on herd immunity to keep from getting sick. Reading about people who refuse to vaccinate their kids is infuriating to me. They are putting their own kids at risk as well as people like myself.

Disclaimer* all my kids are vaccinated! Just wanted to throw that out there...

I had read that years ago about the toxic tampons. So that wasn't new info. E was poo trained by a year (he couldn't say it but would walk up to the toilet and hit it when he'd have to go) he just still pee'd in his diaper. I'm not saying Cher isn't crazy (hello she fed her kid like a baby bird) I'm saying that EC isn't making your kid poo like a dog boy.

I'm very happy for your miracle Dallas.
I wonder if she taught him to cock his leg?
Surely the loo is easier, well it was whilst I was being potty trained by my 2 year old daaughter. She was a very thorough teacher. Very reward oriented. I got Loads of "good girl mummy"

All my gorgeous children are vaccinated. I don't want them to catch something horrible from someone, I also don't want them to pass anything on.
Each to his/her own, but live with circumstances either way

Thank you skippy :-)

My mom got toxic shock years ago from tampons, never used them since. She did not want me using them because of it. Iritated my male gym teacher in high school. The swimming unit was a month long, of course I got my monthly. One of the female gym teachers gave me a couple tampons, my mom called them & chewed them out for it. I got out of swimming for a week.

Yeah, I think she'll change her tune if/when one of her kids comes down with something that was eradicated decades ago, due to vaccinations. You know, like measles or polio. Let's hear her thoughts then.

And FWIW, this past fall, I had to get the chicken pox vaccine, as I'd never had it. Getting these illnesses as an adult can be deadly.

skippy said...

Shelly I read that as she chewed them. Glad I read again.

Wait, if the baby was potty trained at 6 months, was he crawling to the loo and than hoisting himself up ?!? Or was he an early walker ? Or us it that, mommy's been potty trained rather than the baby ???

She's an idiot. And vaccines are a matter of public health and safety, not "to each his own". Vaccine research and development has some of the most stringent testing and regulation there is to have. I have had it up to here with anti-science people. The plural of anecdote is not data, people!

Enty is NOT being unnecessarily harsh.

I thought TSS was from not swapping them out frequently enough? Never have had a problem. The TSS warnings are all over the packaging.

Oopsy_Daisy said...

Elimination Communication is just being able to recognize when your child has to go. To her, knowing those signs could mean that he was "trained," but the reality is that until he is actively engaged in it he isn't. My 2 year old is trained, but still needs help with the cleaning part. I say she is totally trained, my husband says otherwise.

Thanks Charlie and AJ, best 3 days in a long time :-D

@dallas . congrats on your miracle baby!! spacing out the immunizations is the best way imo. you def need them but all @ once? no. spacing them out yes. and having a pedi who supports that is a comfort... good for you. what's your baby's name?

Sherry said...

I think all kids potty train and wean when they are ready. It's a developmental thing and everyone does it at a different pace. I was potty trained at 14 months but it took me 3 yrs to learn to ride a bike.

I gotta say though with all the different methods and theories and all, that I am glad I don't have chirrens. The information overload would be daunting.

Our pedi is WONDERFUL!! She is about my age and has a few kids of her own. She's also had infertility issues, so she is really understanding of where I'm coming from. She's one in a million.

Tampons cause infertility? Tell that to my four kids.

JSierra said...

I bet he just crawled around outside and pooped while he crawled which made her think he was potty trained.

Anonymous said...

Exactly this. Personally no vaccination then no school and clubs etc

The thing that really makes you not listen to her is when she is talking tampons and infertility she calls her vagina her hoo ha and chichi. She ain't no science person.

If you are a celebrity and are not getting the special, special attention that you deserve, just write a book and say outrageous things. This will surely get you booked on talk shows. Then wait and make the rounds again and say you were misunderstood. Write another book to clear things up.

She's a$$ and she is just playing everyone

auntliddy said...

I read excerpt from her book. To be fair, she stresses over and over that this works fir her and every mom shld do what THEY think is right. She basically says no meds till you exhaust natural remedies. Some of it makes sense. However, this potty training method is the mom being trained, my kids and grandchildren are vaccinated and so shld everyone else. It is hippy dippy but a mother or father cannot possibly take any ONE persons advice, and esp someone rekatively untrained. And for all moms whi feel they are failing the potty wars, i always say, no one goes down the aisle with pampers and a bottle. They will get it eventually. You're doing great!

Anonymous said...

In primitive cultures babies are carried all the time and apparently the mothers apparently can feel when the child is about to go to the bathroom and know when to put them down. The human race has been around a lot longer than pampers or potties.

Krissie said...

Hmm. Hundreds of years ago people who had contagious diseases with no cure would be shipped off to deserted islands so they couldn't infect anyone else. Maybe this is what we ought to do today with idiots like Alicia who refuses to vaccinate their kids and are perfectly content with letting innocent people contract diseases that should be long-dead.

Has she come out in favor of Naked Yoga Breastfeeding yet?

Nothing good showing, but probably NSFW and disturbing as fuck. Surprised Hilaria didn't get in on this.

Cassiopeia said...

I am huge pro breast feeding as well as a yogi...I still find this disturbing.
It might be less so, and even cute,if she had on pants and if her ankles weren't bound to a tree branch.

IceQueen said...

Amish. Measles. Outbreak. They don't usually vaccinate, so I want to hear her opinion when her child gets a disease that could have been prevented.

IceQueen said...

You're not going to make a Gisele joke over this? I'm disappointed. She was breast feeding, AND getting her hair/makeup done, while a manicurist worked on her hands.

riotgrrrl said...

She may be pretty cray cray but I'm with her on the tampon debate. If you soak one in booze and insert it you can get drunk very fast. The vajayjay, and the cervix in particular are very absorbent.

Count Jerkula said...

@Allis: I looked at that when I first saw the pic. I think it is a tattoo and an ankle bracelet. If she was tied to the branch, and the baby wasn't there, it would be a hot picture.

NaughtyNurse said...

That's alright. Let people like her not vaccinate their kids. It's called thinning the herd. Natural selection.

OKay said...

Ugh. I cannot wait until this whole attachment/child-led rearing fad (and yes, that's all it is) passes. Then it'll be on to the next stupid thing. I'm raising my kids to be independent, self-reliant, properly immunized people. I'd appreciate it if everyone else would do the same, but at the very least could you not write a whole book detailing your lunacy that other lunatics might pick up and use as a guideline for life?

Henriette said...

Just another idiot.

Aoife said...

Children are little petri dishes. If it exists a child will catch it and pass it on all the time smiling that smile that melts you inside.

People like Silverstone are idiots and should be called out on their bullsh*t. Here in NYC there are outbreaks of measles and mumps. These are diseases that were eradicated in the United States until these jerks came along with their nonsense. I guess they won't be happy until polio comes back.

The thing that gets me is they assume their little precious bundles of joy will never be affected which is stupid since once you and your child leave the house you have no control over who or what you're exposed to. This is why not vaccinating a child is so dangerous.

My bundle of joy is going to be 27 this year and I remember reading that the MMR vaccine (measles, mumps, rubella) was considered dangerous by some when she was young. She got the shot.

I also believe talk is cheap. I can't imagine that she and the others who spout this nonsense haven't vaccinated their children. The best schools will not accept a child that hasn't been vaccinated. #justsaying

Rant over.
