At my age, 69 doesn't sound ancient anymore

Death...

I remember him on AMC. His character was crazy! Loved that soap.

Another reason I long for the 80's.

Also, I just love Christine Baranski

His name was Cowles not Coles, ffs!

Oh man! RIP Billy Clyde Tuggle :-(

I remember when Billy Clyde arrived in Pine Valley. Epic storylines with Estelle & Benny Sago, Donna Beck & Chuck Tyler. Loved his scenes with Phoebe Tyler. Even tuned back in when he & Tad Martin fought & fell off the bridge to their alleged deaths (cuz no one is truly dead in Soap Opera Land!).

Damn, just damn. Such an iconic character.

Peace & happy memories to Christine Baranski. Thanks for sharing your husband with all of us AMC fans.

@Orvilla
I always watched AMC with my mom. Loved his character on the show. I was so mad when it was cancelled. At least GH is still limping along.

She is awesome. Always loved her in anything she's done.

Ah, RIP

This gives me the sads. I hate to hear this. I remember watching him on AMC when I was younger. Poor Christine Baranski.

@cornflower Yes! I loved that storyline with Tad Martin.

@AJ I watched GH briefly.I tuned in when robin found out she was HIV positive and Sonny was sleeping with the blonde. The one he married several times.

Days, AMC, and One Life to live were my jams. At my cousins, nannys, or great aunts it was Another World, Santa Barbara, and Y&R.

This has me thinking of soaps. Does anyone remember Generations?

RIP, Matthew. You were wonderful on All My Children

Bluezz said...

@Orvilla Yes! I remember Generations. Watched that one for awhile. Do you remember the Texas one? That Kin Shriner left GH for? I think it was an NBC soap trying to pull Dallas nighttime fans to daytime.

Orvilla Bedinbacher said...

@cornflower No, I never saw that one.

Love love love her. I hope she is surrounded - as much as one can be in the industry - with much much love and support.

Married 30 years and two beautiful daughters. That's how you have a successful marriage in Hollywood folks, fly that love under the radar - set on stealth mode.

Seriously saddened by this news. Love Christine's work. I recognized him immediately, even though I wasn't a soap watcher, my mother was though.

I remember him from The Cowboy Way! Sad for Christine. I love her.

Here's a great quote from Michael Fairman's interview with Matthew Cowles on 5/10/13:

"MF: Long time fans also remember your scenes with Benny Sago, then played by Vasili Bogazianos!  They were so tension-filled!

MATTHEW: This is true! And people do remember him.  My wife said to me, “You’re the star.”  And my wife, Christine Baranski, is a very successful actress!  I don’t make any comparisons.  She does The Good Wife, and she is terrific!  Oh my goodness, my wife is a good actress.  And … she makes beautiful babies!"

LOL! I can hear his voice as clear as day in that quote. Guess that's one of the reasons they had a successful 30-year marriage ~ truly supporting each other's careers.

Where's my @Sandyboo? Aren't you a soap fan?

I'll stop going down Memory Lane now. Just that Cowles' passing has hit me as hard as Anthony Herrera (James Stenbeck/ATWT) & Jeanne Cooper (Katherine Chancellor/Y&R). My lifelong love affair with these characters spans 40+ years. Geez, I must be old! :-(
Don't know how to make it clicky:

Billy Clyde Tuggle was one of the great soap opera characters ever. RIP.

sandybrook said...

And so was Benny Sago.

See us soap people become so attached to the characters we watch everyday, they are like our friends and when they die we ache because we "know" them

Thanks, I knew you'd understand, @Sandyboo

Seeing the name "Billy Clyde Tuggle" was like a ticket back in time. I hadn't thought of that storyline in years, but I instantly remembered all of the players.

No idea he was married to Christine Baranski. Like the poster above mentioned, some people in Hollywood CAN have a private life.

He was one of the scariest villains of daytime tv. RIP.

He was the bomb on AMC. I loved Santa Barbara and GH back in the good ol days

I can so remember watching him on All My Children. My mom would call him all kinds of names and none of them would be nice and then he would say or do something that would have us laughing out loud. The way he dresses was so outlandish also.
I had no idea he was married to Christine Baranski until awhile back I saw a picture of them together and I just knew his face immediately and when I checked I saw how long they had been married. I am truly saddened at his loss and I hope both her and their daughters have lots of support around them during this time. RIP

He doesn't look like he meant to marry a girl. Just saying that Mr. Roper would let him share an apartment with two girls easily.

Didn't know him, but I like his moustache.

RIP.

Rip. And sympathy to family

He guest starred on the re-boot of "All My Children" on Bravo, and you could tell he was reading the teleprompter exclusively. I wondered if he was ill, or just getting too old remember his lines. It was sad, because he was one of the BEST characters ever!

I was a regular viewer during the Billy/Donna/Benny Sago days. I loved how they reacted with Phoebe Tyler. I love Buffalo girl Christine Baranski, too, but I always thought they were such a random couple.

Rest in peace. And condolences, Ms Baranski. We love you!

I always loved his work. He was a terrific character actor. I will miss Matthew Cowles so much.

Damn he was so creepy good. I miss the summer days that started with Love of Life and ended with Dark Shadows. I think I saw the first episode of AMC. It's a dying genre. I'm hanging in there with B&B and Days.

I shocked myself by crying when I saw yesterday he had died! I loved Billy Clyde and was SO happy to see him on the AMC reboot. Just an incredible actor and a class act all around. And yeah, it's COWLES, Enty. I just want to punch you in the head for all that disrespect...

Aw. Billy Clyde Tuggle was responsible for the verb "to busticate" entering our family vernacular. I hope he didn't suffer. I also seem to recall that he and Baranski had recently separated.

At any rate, RIP Mr. Cowles.

Billy Clyde Tuttle scared the crap out of me when I was young, he raped the iconic Ruth Martin for gods sakes! RIP, he is proof that there are quality actors on daytime TV!

Rest in Peace.

The Golden Age of soap operas has gone. Now daytime tv is full of judge shows. UGH.

Sprink said...

Ah Meauxelle, thanks. You wrote my comment for me!

Aww. AMC will always remind me of my mom and nana (who'll now greet Billy Clyde in The Great Beyond).

I personally know him as Charlie the equipment manager in the hockey film Slapshot.
