I hardly did any work yesterday... it's called "It's Monday and I'm hungover."

I call BS. The US don't even care about proper football (ducks for cover).

About 2pm PST, half of my office mysteriously came down with illnesses. The better one was the admin who said his shoes were too tight and had to go home to change them. Curiously it took him about 3 hours before he came back, even though we can see his apartment building from our parking lot.

We have a pretty good shot at beating Portugal. Klingsmann is changing up his offense and it looks to be doing okay and with just this win, he's already taken us further than Arena or Bradley ever did. We won't beat Germany though. They're just way too strong and they all play together on Bayern, as it is. Shoot for second in the group and see what happens in the round of 32.

I'll tell what ELSE didn't happen: Book Club voting. Shaking my head AND tsking. Seven, I expect more from you, and everyone else.

smh tsk tsk

Did you know... "soccer" was a term invented and used by the Brits, who then abandoned its use when Americans used it too much? It's true!

They're playing the games on the TV in the cafe downstairs, which I am forced, er, privileged to listen to (both games and cheering/shouting) while I work, since it's an open atrium building. LUCKY ME.

The US played Ghana? Who won? I once met the Prince of Ghana. He was really nice.

I voted ....

TalksTooMuch said...

That's right, you did, sandy! And I was ridiculously excited because you and Orvilla are new voters too!

WHOOOHOOOOOOO!!!! I couldn't watch last night nd I just watched it now. Even though I knew the score and THOUGHT I cared more about Ghana bc they have players from the club I follow, I was crying so hard at our second goal. It's so strange that I don't know many of the players but they mean so much to me bc they're my people! There's just something abut team USA. I wish more of our guys played in Europe, because that's where you learn the skills that make you great but our team is so underrated. I expect us to go farther then last WC which was unfair but you can't complain.

@TTM.. i submit to the committee and look forward to reading something outside my norm.. although I'm still not finished with Reza Aslan's Zealot

I was listening to NPR yesterday in the car, they were interviewing a Ghana NYC transplant who assured the listeners Ghana would deliver a 3/nil victory

I was really surprised at the US win! Ghana has defeated US every single time sometimes up to 5/nil (I might have to YouTube that game -- I've never seen any game with that many points; even combined)

And thank you Enty for a World Cup post!!!!

Hell I'm not getting anything done any of the days, working from home and being hooked on the entire World Cup! HOOKED, I tell ya.

And I really wanted Algeria to win just now, dang it...

This next game will rock, though--Brazil vs. Mexico!!!

Uh my bad TTM:( I watched the GoT finale and nearly launched a dog across the room while screaming at the tv. So, for the rest of the night I was ranting like a lunatic. I will read whatever is decided on.

TTM I'll pretend to read whatever is decided on like I always do.

What does it mean to the American educational system when more people know who Honey Boo Boo is than can find Ghana on a map?

aemish said...

Crap. Now I know there's another GoT episode I have to watch. This is truly a poor habit I've obtained. I don't give a shit about medieval reenactments. Wtf?

What does it mean to the American educational system that Vermont's governor signed into law mandating GMO labeling by 2016 and Monsanto alongside the GMA will fight it to its death despite the clear and present will of the people

Yes, awesome, aemish, always good to have another type of book suggested!

TalksTooMuch said...

You know we're just gonna spend the whole time on the social post, but you know, form and all that

TalksTooMuch said...

Derek, please tell me that's not an actual book? Ol Wonky Books, aka WorstRefundGapEVER has a book on looking hot...?

TalksTooMuch said...

Maybe it means that Ghana needs to be on TV more? And have a catch phrase as hilarious as a 5 year old saying "a dolla make me holla honey boo boo child"?

I can't imagine why it could possibly be hard for the US to beat Ghana, or why anyone is surprised that they did.

I mean, think of the $$$ the US can throw at its team. Vs, Ghana, which is, well, Ghana.

figgy said...

Plus, I get much more excited when one of these little countries wins. It means so much to them and their national pride.

Ghana is rather difficult to find on a map (Togo, Ivory Coast and others are in such a small place compared to the rest of Africa), the real proof of American knowledge of world geography would be placing Russia, Australia, Egypt, Germany or the US on a map. And most Americans wouldn't be able to find any of those.

timebob said...

@Figgy Ghana knocked the US out of the World Cup in 2006 & 2010 so yeah it was a big deal to some.

I work with all Europeans of all different countries. So it is a national holiday where I work.

I like to watch it every 4 years it is fun to see everybody get so excited about it. The only down side was so many people were streaming the games online that our firm had to block all sports or sport related websites. We literally gummed up our whole network watching.

So now I watch on my little kindle at work. Yeah wifi!

aemish said...

Kindle? My mom has one of those.. I was tempted to buy one after two ipads met their end and we bought some samsung tablet for our daughter which didn't measure up so wound up having to buy a third..

what is up with kindle? good?

Not much going on on the field either, in this game or any other soccer match.

TTM I would love it if Book Club books were under 250 pages....I'm so slack these days when it comes to reading and I always have 4-5 books on the go at any one time.....but I'm ALL about the social post!!

How goes your travel,Becks??

BeckyMae said...

Pretty good thanks love! Was thinking of starting a little picture blog if people are interested....we will be going to some nice places! Just had four days with Mr Mae's 15 yr old daughter who lives here....had some amazing sushi, tiro pita, souvlaki and went to a restaurant that serves food they ate in Ancient Greece!

This Brazil vs Mexico game is making me tense!! Someone score already!!

timebob said...

@aemish I have the HD Kindle was about $159 I think wifi only. I like it. I have the ipad2 but it is too heavy to lug around. The little kindle i don't mind leaving in my desk with apple i would be afraid it would get stolen. I can just put it on the corner of my desk and nobody notices it.

I get the same apps as Apple also, for the money it is worth it.

trogdor said...

@D Brown - It means that Ghana is a stable country and poses no threat. However, should America decide they need a good ol' slice of apple pie and sum' FREEDOM, most of us will figure out where Ghana is. :)

I loved that one of our own, Dempsey made the first goal so quickly. He has been well worth the money the Sounders paid to acquire him.

I love that the US seems to be getting on board, just a bit, with the World Cup.

Legacy of 1994.

That said, football/futbol/soccer still (generally) bores the bejeezus out of me. Watching the big games or highlights is the only way to go for the beginner...

The Enquirer said...

Where does Enty work anyway? I always assumed he worked for one of the tabloids.

aemish said...

thanks @timebob.. I'll keep that in mind

Alita said...

Hehehe Violet - except when it comes to World Anything the Yanks seem to get on it. Like that Baseball World Stores that everyone else from around the world can participate in and ... oh ... awkward.

You got any room in that bunker?

Alita said...

Wow figgy ... That was so incredibly patronising! Gold star!

It's lovely you'd rather give the World Cup away to a county "which is, well, Ghana." But actually you don't get to make that call. US did win but they sure weren't favourites - think about it. Ghana has a freaking awesome soccer team - historically, not just this year.

Seriously ... America isn't the best at the world at everything. True story!

Alita said...

Kermit - there is a tv programme called CNNN where they walk around America asking people to label places on a map - a small island of Australia (Tasmania) gets labeled 'South Korea.' Is pretty funny - but there are ignorant morons everywhere, and I suspect that they are often found while looking for a vox pop type deal (esp visible after its edited).
