Blind Item #8

An actress on that HBO show that everyone loves has always been a little eccentric. She might be a little fired if what she says is true. She says she slept with the boyfriend of the boss at a Christmas party.

(not everybody loves it. some people hate the show and its creator. i am compelled to post this disclaimer each & every time the subject arises, sorry)

That is a valid disclaimer@KNU...

I've never watched thew show..and by y'alls reaction,I probably never will.

I like the show@KWU and @ planetJ . I it's got some brilliant moments and great overall chemistry, but I definitely see how it's not everyone's cup o tea.
Adam Driver is a raw, instinctive actor. I love watching him. Super bright, as well, and it informs all his work IMHO. Raises the bar a bit...

I watched the first episode of Girls just to see WTF is was all about. No more. I hated all the characters and if that's what young people are like in real life, then we are in trouble.

I'm a fan of the show, and I like Lena!

I agree @Tricia :)

Never seen it but I know I would hate it.

Whoever bought this site must be getting paid to support Girls. Every time it is mentioned it is described as a hit or show everyone loves. Not a hit and loved only by small group of viewers probably less than 500,000 who watch it but it has support of HBO (who only want a little critic love and probably another project from Apatow that someone might actually watch.)

Plumbs said...

It has been on for 4 seasons and wins awards. That is a hit these days.

texasrose said...

I guess that is one definition of hit so you're right. Not 'show that everyone loves' though.

sorry but come ON haters. i've seen one episode of the show and it reps real life for young women in the city (i live in a different city but that show overlaps so much more w my experience than any other). just bc it refuses to sugarcoat modern life and sexuality, older, out-of-touch (i'm guessing) suburbanites have a need to blast it as offensive? k this will sting a little, but it'll be quick: you are not lena's audience. move along.

I know someone who watches the show and she said this season is weird because so far Lena hasn't directed/written a single episode like she always did in past seasons. my friend thinks something is up and it has to do with Lena. But what do I know. Lena's voice is shrill as hell and I feel there's nothing interesting about turning your life's trials and tribulations into a TV show. I prefer original storytelling, not turning your diary into entertainment. Plus she seems so full of herself.

as a 25 year old gay male who is speaking for his 27 year old female friend, yes, I know a little something about my generation and its reality. Thanks.

jack said...

also, I don't think the criticisms of the show stem from sugarcoating as you say. ive seen many episodes with friends - I can say the writing is great. intelligent but there is this attitude of self-involvement and YES, there's tons of privilege and first world problems. you kind of want to like hannah (lena) but she's such a terrifying hybrid of insecurity and arrogance I just cant. she reps to me all the insufferable white 20-somethings who ambush urban places looking for life's lessons. what the hell is original about that concept? also Ive thought about this a lot - when Girls ends what the hell is lena gonna do? her whole spiel is exploring the life of twentysomething millenials. what is she gonna do next, a thirtysomethings show? please.

I'm a 26 yr old female.
I hate that show.

If that's reality for anyone, boy do I feel sorry for them. What a sad and disgusting way to live. Call me a prude, old, repressed or whatever you like, I don't care. Better than being damaged goods and trash. No wonder this country is circling the drain.

jack said...

and to add, not to be mean but to be realistic....lena matches herself in the show with love interests that are above her 'pay grade'.....and you just know it has to do with her perception of herself.

Bex said...

wow, glad i left the repression of the suburbs behind long ago. sorry to disappoint jack, but a) i wasn't addressing you specifically, and b) you as any kind of young man do not experience my reality. igloo, your ageist perspective doesn't have relevance or give you a right to evaluate me. maybe you wanna go back to watching fox news where it's more comfortable for closed-minded, judgmental people. the paranoid tone of statements like yours fits nicely among those with too much time and not enough empathy on their hands. enjoy(?) your chosen existential angst and fear-mongering, i'll be over here engaging with actual reality and appreciating the many shades of gray it offers. i realize you're only familiar w a very specific subset of 50 of them anyway.

Ay said...

Lol at you making this a suburb vs city thing. This show speaks to a very small subset of people. Just enough to keep it on tv for a bit. I bet the average person has no idea this show exists.

Bex said...

ok this will be my final comment since i have an actual full-time job in publishing to do and real contributions to make to the rest of the world. tenn, no, i don't know how ridiculous it must sound to you to hear a genuine but unpopular perspective from a young woman. i realize we're not supposed to be anything but purity, sweetness and light, but we're pretty much over being stigmatized and silenced. enlighten me re: how ridiculous it is to stand up for my rights. and ay, nothing you say above convinces me that you are at all living on earth among sane human beings. quite the opposite, really. thx to all for your irrelevant non-contributions to the serious debate re: women's rights! this is why we won't stop or shut up, ever.

Does everyone really love Lena Dunham?? Hmm.. I was thinking
Rachel McAdams / True Detective, It's on HBO.

Apart from the eccentric part, you always use that discription about her. Doesn't sound like something she would do as well, but who knows.

I actually enjoy the show from time to time. It's embarrasing to admit and equal embarrasing to watch. I can't imagine showcasing my youth in all its angst. Because, really WTF did I know in my 20's. Watching my son now navigate his makes me really take a hard look at my own. I was just figuring my shit out. But, damn it was a good time.

Any one who uses terms like "Nazi" or "Fox News" to buttress their point of view is lazy, presumptuous, deeply angry and not worth listening to no matter how eloquent they appear.

Nope, .."Thirtysomething" is already taken- it was a t.v. show on ABC---same shite, different day...

Girls is an awful show. I look forward to Lena Dunham's future obscurity.

I agree with "Yes" about it being Lena Headley and Game of Thrones. She's always been eccentric.

"I feel there’s nothing interesting about turning your life’s trials and tribulations into a TV show."

Well she's rich, so there's that.

That was EXACTLY what I thought when I tried to sit through it!

I love when people say "this is my last comment because I'm very busy and important in real life with my job doing x, but here's my overbloated opinion because what I have to say and shove down your throat is the most important thing happening today." So refreshing.

texasrose said...

I guess as soon as the clue listed show that everyone loves that it couldn't be Girls. GOT and Headley fit but possibly Dormer also.

I've watched a bit. No objections to the sexual content, just that the characters seemed whiny to me. I may be unfair, though.

Fritanga said...

What awards has Girls won? I know it's always nominated for Emmys, Golden Globes, etc (God knows why - it sucks), but have never heard of any wins.

Fritnga said...

And by pandering to that "modern life" (which, let's face it, consists of whiny entitled white hipsters), Girls will never be considered a great or ground-breaking series. It's not universal - it's extremely specific, and to its detriment. In 25 years it will seem as quaint as hippies or disco dancers or grunge.

Fritnga said...

Yup, your status as an entitled white woman with a job is really embattled right now. You really need someone to stand up for you, you're so oppressed. Thank God Dunham is out there pulling for you, naked and whiny and constantly complaining that no one recognizes her genius. You girls have it rough.

Elle said...

I tried watching Girls once and found it to be exhausting!!!! I don't have a bias toward sugar coated, suburban-oriented shows. I wanted to like the show, but it bored me.

rox said...

am I the only one who realizes girls is a satire of those whiny entitled hipsters? it's very good as a satire.
