Chris Cornell Has Died

Chris Cornell, who gained fame as the lead singer of the bands Soundgarden and later Audioslave, has died at age 52, according to his representative, Brian Bumbery.

Cornell, who had been on tour, died Wednesday night in Detroit.

Sources confirm that Cornell died at MGM Grand Detroit following a show at the Fox Theatre. Detroit police say he died from an apparent suicide.

Police say Cornell's wife called a family friend and asked him to check on his well-being. The friend forced open the hotel room door and found Cornell on the bathroom floor, according to police. We're told Cornell was pronounced dead on the scene.

Bumbery called the death "sudden and unexpected" and said his wife and family were shocked by it. The statement said the family would be working closely with the medical examiner to determine the cause and asked for privacy.

Cornell was one of the leading voices of the 1990s grunge movement with Soundgarden, which emerged as one of the biggest bands out of Seattle's emerging music scene, joining the likes of Nirvana, Pearl Jam and Alice in Chains.

Formed in 1984 by Cornell, guitarist Kim Thayil and bassist Hiro Yamamoto, Soundgarden's third studio album, "Badmotorfinger," in 1991 spawned enormously popular singles "Jesus Christ Pose," ''Rusty Cage" and "Outshined" that received regular play on alternative rock radio stations.

Cornell also collaborated with members of what would become Pearl Jam to form Temple of the Dog, which produced a self-titled album in 1991 in tribute to friend Andrew Wood, former frontman for Mother Love Bone.

Three years later, Soundgarden broke through on mainstream radio with the album "Superunknown," which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and was nominated for a Grammy for Best Rock Record in 1995. It included hit singles "Spoonman," ''Fell on Black Days," ''Black Hole Sun," ''My Wave" and "The Day I Tried to Live."

Soundgarden disbanded in 1997 due to tensions in the band, and Cornell pursued a solo career. In 2001, he joined Audioslave, a supergroup that included former Rage Against the Machine members Tom Morello, Brad Wilk and Tim Commerford. The band released three albums in six years and also performed at a concert billed as Cuba's first outdoor rock concert by an American band, though some Cuban artists have disputed that claim.
Audioslave disbanded in 2007, but Cornell and Soundgarden reunited in 2012 and released the band's sixth studio album, "King Animal" in 2012.

The second I heard this news, I thought of this blind item and wondered if there's any connection here.

So saddened(and shocked).
His voice was astonishing/ and I loved all his music(including Audioslave.).Was also an extremely nice, humble man from what I heard. Way to soon.

OMG, that does sound like him!!! Thanks Mila. Soundgarden is one of my favorite bands of all time!! Wish he would have sought help instead of resorting to this. RIP.

Amazing voice. One of those you recognized the moment you heard the first note

I'm so sad about this. It's almost as devastating to me as when Glenn Frey died.

That blind makes me sad, and unfortunately, I believe it's probably all true. Looks like we are stuck with Eddie Vedder as the Betty White of grunge now.

RIP I hope that he didn't commit suicide like I've been hearing from rock radio reports this morning.

me too. but if you believe the BI from January was about him, it really makes me wonder if he just couldn't see a way out. BTW, ltns sandy <3

Saw soundgarden live back in the day, great voice and he will be missed.

Mila said...

^^definitely this.
The original BI said he didn't realized he was getting ripped off, but he must have found out between now and the beginning of the year. Plus, he had met someone else and Enty said it will "get ugly" and the current wife's family "wouldn't go quietly". He also may have felt tremendous guilt for wrongly accusing the former wife who seemed to stay quiet and classy throughout the ordeal. What a mess he made for himself when he got involved with the second wife.

Weird that wife is stating how there were no warning signs of being suicidal, but also states she talked to him during sound check & after the show. Then she calls asking a friend to check on him a few hours later to see if he was ok? If no red flags or warning signs, why send someone in to check on him? Doesn't add up...

Mila said...

Agree that this is odd. Can't help but wonder if the second wife and her shady family are somehow behind this....

It will be very interesting to see how the estate situation shakes out. He has the child from the previous marriage who will be entitled to a cut. His wife and her family will show their true colors when the estate is settled..... I hope his daughter's Mom gets her a good lawyer. I suspect she'll need it :(

Seattle's 98.9 is doing a good tribute if you want to stream it. http://live.989rocks.com/listen/

Just to clarify, I'm not saying I believe the family had anything to do with his death. I just wonder that if this blind item is indeed even about him, did the possible family issues cause distress in his life?

Breaking/Death ruled "Suicide by hanging":(((((

And yet he was so stoked about Detroit and the upcoming shows--- this is crazy. Maybe he fell off the wagon after the sold out show and ? The wife allegedly had his friend go to room to check on him so, she had concerns.
So very sad and mysterious

That blind is clearly him. A couple of small red herrings (no mention of Soundgarden, the blind band mentioned is Audioslave, etc.) but so much adds up.

Definitely sheds some light on a potential motive for suicide.

Awful. RIP

autoerotic asphyxiation

Tricia13 said...

Could well be.. didn't even think of that---like Hutchence.

Most of the stories seem to indicate he wasn't depressed, no note, looking forward to next show. It has to be a possibility.

CityGirl said...

That's what I was thinking too as by all accounts he did not appear to be suicidal or even depressed. He also seemed to have been a really good guy. Sad for his family and friends.

I loved everything he did. So sad. He will be missed.

I was shocked to wake up to this. What a voice. Loved him. All these guys are going from 90s. I want to know what the blind was that relates to him referred to on Twitter. Always wanted him to play Judas in Jesus Christ Superstar revival too. So sad.

Missy said...

It struck me as odd too all the calls from wife. To me, they were either fighting or she was keeping tabs on him for fear of him cheating or maybe he was using & to keep him straight. But he just posted a really loving tribute to her & her mother for Mother's Day. And a columnist who went to the show last night said she saw something was wrong. That he was staggering at times & seemed weak. Maybe using again. Toxicology will tell. Can't imagine the hutchence thing. Something was afoot. What a loss. Eddie V, stay healthy. We love you!

Missy said...

That blind is definitely him. But then writing how devoted he was to wife in that Sunday tweet doesn't sound like he was leaving her. With two little kids. Just so sad. Fell On Black Days

Boilerplate Mother's Day greetings on social media don't make a happy marriage.

What i don't understand was didn't he have a security detail with him? If so, where were they? Why did the wife have to call "a family friend" to check on him? Doesn't make sense

Plus I read today that the friend who checked on him has said he gave him the extra meds. Why was he doing that? (A) why was Chris not in charge of his own meds? Could he not be trusted not to od? (Which would be a sign of being suicidal imo) & (B) why was someone deliberately giving him more than the specified dosage to begin with? This whole thing seems suspect to me rbh

Bono's sang Running to Stand Still for his Cornell tribute - that's a heroin reference.

The twitter feed of mil could make a person think she was married to Cornell. Oppressive comes to mind . Makes it easy to see why suicide seemed like a good option if the BI is to be believed .
Still a terrible choice especially for his THREE kids.
And if it's autoerotic how many kinds of stooopit do have to be to do that alone?????

noewun said...

The level of obsession the MIL has for him is really creepy IMO

I say this with all due respect and out of total love: Susan Silver is a psychotic douche nozzle who deservers her own suite in hell where I hope her skin is eaten slowly by rabid maggots with bad breath.

But I meant it in a good way.

If anyone ever doubts what a nice guy Chris is – the fact that he doesn't trash her or wipe her off the face of the earth is proof. I, luckily, am not a nice guy and if I go to hell – the only request I have (other than air conditioning) is that I'm allowed to watch Susan get gang-raped repeatedly by the whole Nazi regeme for eternity. Or maybe that's my idea of heaven – I'll get back to ya on that.

I have always tried not to gossip, honestly, but I'll speak up to defend or correct something if I know otherwise. Thus, anything Susan Silver ever did to anyone is their own issue and not mine. My issue is that she tried to steal credit (and money) from several bands and forced others to do things they never wanted to do. She's the type to offer you drugs, try and screw you in the dressing room, and when you refuse – she cries rape and says you're a junkie. That's Susan.

After he grew a brain and they split, Chris turned his whole life around and deserves nothing but success. HIS success. Chris is a great guy, awesome talent, killer goourmet cook, and sucks ass at basketball. He is the guy who will guest vox for free on an unknown's album just to help out. I'd take a bullet for him (and nearly did). Again, he's no saint and not perfect – but the fact he lived to escape from that beast (Susan) is right up there with the burning bush in terms of "amazing".

Greek chicks rock. ? I don't speak for Chris or anyone else – just my 2 cents and I'll say it to Susan's face too.

Oh hi Vicky! Shouldn't you be concocting a new "last phone call" story for the press? No one has a bad thing to say about the first wife, except you.

numoon6 said...

She was probably checking on him to see where he was to make sure the hit man she hired to kill him and make it look like suicide scored!

It's been 3 months and it's hitting a lot of people harder each day. Sure we didn't know him. But he gave off a huge presence of being appreciative and humble of his fame. And he seemed real. But HOW HE EVER got into marrying the 2nd wife is beyond me.
1. ugly as all hell.
2. the fucking MIL and family mooching off of him.
3. if I was writing a eulogy letter to my dead husband, I wouldn't be mentioning he bought me a Harry Winston ring because the first one wasn't good enough.
4. She has a history of verbal, violent outbursts.

I feel utterly horrible for him. I'm sure his life was hell with her. If he only met someone who actually gave a shit about HIM and not the fame and money, perhaps this wouldn't have happened. All he had to do was divorce this bitch and/or go hide for a while and clear his head. Or hell, expose her ass for the fraud she is.

I'm sure she is the reason why he killed himself. We miss you Chris. We miss you a lot.

i read a comment that said he hung himself while on the phone arguing with her that night, he wanted his computer fixed so he could live broadcast his hanging via skype to her...thats why she knew and called bodyguard for help...someone also alluded to a coke problem, maybe she took all the foundation $$ spent it on coke, he was livid and wanted out, she wouldnt let him so he hung himself over the telephone in a rage....how awful!

Breeze said...

In my opinion that repulsive wife of his used her mob connections to have him killed. People know it and that's why no one is speaking. Imo of course.

Breeze said...

Was that devilish mil his handler? They were all over that man in my opinion. They controlled him and had a Vice like grip on him. It's disgusting

Breeze said...

TMZ appear to be major Vicky allies, they'll print anything she gives them IMO. Fuck knows why they would side with that scum

Breeze said...

She typed those herself IMO to put herself in a good light. Sickening

Breeze said...

He didn't post those Mother's Day messages. That should disgust all of you.

Breeze said...

I don't think it was the bodyguard I think she used her mob contacts to end him

Breeze said...

Absolutely . How incredibly sad the man is dead just months after this BI. The wife and her family won't go quietly
