Your Turn

Best concert you ever went to. I know I have also asked first concert you attended before but in case anyone was not here or missed it, would love to see the answers again.

Even though I'm not a huge fan of theirs, maybe the best concert I ever went to was a KISS show at a nightclub in Brooklyn called L'Amour which held less than a thousand and was packed. I was squeezed up against the stage right in front of Gene and sometimes Paul.
I also saw Sly and the Family Stone in a nightclub in Manhattan called The Red Parrot which wasn't so full, because they were waaay past their peak at the time.

First concert? Captain and Tennille.

First real concert? Champagne Jam 1977 - Heart, Bob Segar, Atlanta Rhythm Section and others.

Best? Hands down, Bette Midler, right after "The Rose" and before she became a Disney property and literally cleaned up the act. (Circa 1983)

A private Christmas party in Atlanta back in the 90's with Bert Bachrach as the entertainment. AMAZING.

In the late 80's or early 90's it was New Kids on the Block. In the 2000's it's definitely Garth Brooks!

I went to two recent concerts that blew me away. Saw Billy Joel at the Garden, my first time seeing him and he did not disappoint. He sounds as good as ever, played a great variety, including album cuts, and it was a very solid show.

I also just saw Paul McCartney for the first time and was amazed by what a long show he plays. Three hours, 40 songs from all over his career. There were some I think I would have traded out for others but still, it was Paul and I really had a good time and no complaints. Ninth row.

Peter Gabriel consistently blows my mind every time I see him. Even if there are no new songs. Just my favorite live act ever. Bryan Adams is a very close second, he is really, really fun and engages with his audience. Totally recommend seeing him.

The Clash at the Palladium in New York City in November 1979. I scalped a ticket for $15 an hour before the show, on the floor, stage left directly in front of the speakers, about a third of the way back. Sam and Dave opened and were great - this was before they split up and Dave began performing with a fake Sam. After their set, there was music over the PA while the Clash set up. The last song was Frank Sinatra doing "High Hopes". The band came out while that was playing, got ready, and on the last note of the song -- BAM! There was a huge sonic explosion that nearly knocked me off my feet. They played for I guess about two hours and never let up -- just completely blew me away. My ears rang for about two hours afterwards.

Second best concert ever? The Clash at the Capitol Theater in Passaic in the spring of 1980. Mikey Dread opened. Half the crowd loved him and half the crowd hated him. I thought there was going to be a riot until Joe Strummer came out and told everyone that the Clash weren't going to play if the audience didn't let Mikey Dread finish. After that things chilled. Somewhat.

I still miss those guys -- especially Joe, god bless him.

@Sandy - I remember L'Amour and the Red parrot well.

Tom Petty 1991-fantastic, the Full MoonFever tour
Ted Nugent 1979- Very loud, and he was clad in a Tarzan leopard print bottom, barely covering his junk

either peter frampton at the cow palace (parts of it were featured on frampton live) or u2 at the ritz, probably their first us gig in the early 80's. bono was transcendental.

First concert - The Carpenters

Best concert - either Sade's first US tour in the mid-80s (saw them at the Tower Theater in Philly, what an incredible show), or Peter Gabriel's "Secret World Tour" in 1993, which opened with his ascending from beneath the stage in an old school Victoria Station like phone booth singing "Please Talk To Me", and just kept getting better from there. Gabriel is by far my favorite live performer.
I'll toss in Prince's "Lovesexy" Tour as a runnerup

Pink Floyd in Germany back in the 70's when I served in the US ARMY.
I was stoned out of my mind, but the concert was excellent.

The Wife & I saw Three Dog Night a few years ago at the Fremont Experience. They were good. But, the crowd was so big, we all felt like sardines in a can.

Ha @ B626. I saw Ted Nugent except I saw the full monty. To begin his 2nd set after intermission, he came out dressed in just an animal print flap front and back suspended at the waist, jumped onto an amplifier, and then jumped off to the stage. Both flaps flew up and he had nothing on underneath. I was sitting in the front row too and got quite an eyeful. Couldn't believe he did that.

Been to tons of concerts but best ever was McCartney a few years ago. Nothing compares. He sang for 3 hours and never even took a drink of water. Blew me away.

Ozzy Osbourne with Randy Rhoads!
I've been to quite a few concerts and Randy Rhoads had this unique talent and focus
on his craft.
It was a pleasure to watch him onstage.

@DavidHowes, Zerooptions, Sandybrook, and Justsayin'...I can imagine those shows you all went to and would've love to have seen Floyd in the old days or Prince or Sly Stone back then. Amazing shows I'm sure.

My personal fave maybe was Live 8 in Hyde Park, because of the Pink Floyd reunion - before Rick Wright or Syd died though Syd wasn't there. It was truly as magical as it seemed. The Fleetwood Mac first reunion gig, and the Metallica S&M gig with Michael Kamen's symphony were all wonderful too. If I had to choose just one only? Probably the Led Zep reunion gig at the O2 in London. We all knew it was historic and the band really brought it. Hard to top that memory.

Himmmm said...

Sd Auntie? I'm green with envy at the James Brown gig! My head wouldve exploded if I'd seen him in the old days probably!

You don't know how much i envy anyone that has seen The Pink Floyd...damn...anyway, my best was a Radiohead concert, here in Italy. in an ancient Palace,..the location, the group...wonderful

One more that I will add - I saw Sigur Ros in an old opera house in Philadelphia, and it was electrifying.

Though it is totally not my style, my best concert was Billy Joel and Sir Elton John together on the face to face.
I do Welcome to Rockville festival in my hometown every year, so its hard for me to pin down my favorite. Soundgarden and Def Lepard though put on an amazing show this year. But as unpopular as this may be, my 2 fave acts are Sully Erna and Godsmack, and Jared Leto with 30 seconds to Mars. (Five Finger death Punch used to be pretty amazing as well until the singer went nuts every other show)

CityGirl said...

Best - midnight show of Prince at the Warner Theatre in DC also would have to say Sly & the Family Stone in Las Vegas (but that is probably because of childhood nostalgia)

First - I think Santana in the early 80's

I can't, just cannot say there's been one single favorite show. As I've seen the Yeah yeah Yeahs, The Kills, Radiohead, Primus and Soundgarden all multiple times, I cannot declare one fave concert as that was my "thing" for about fifteen years (back when I made good money and was able to go to shows all the time) and those bands all kind of tie for my favorite bands so I just have to say I'm jealous of those of you who saw Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin and James Brown!!

Too many to list but my top five today are:

1. Pretenders, 1980 first world tour (I worked at Swingos Hotel & waited on Chrissie Hynde the next day)

2. Bob Marley & the Wailers on my 21st bday (2nd row!)

3. Talking Heads, Stop Making Sense, at the Greek theater in LA '83

4. Van Morrison in Dublin at the Olympia Theatre, early 90's

5. Bruno Mars, just as he was breaking out, at a tiny venue (tix were around $10.)

First concert: Jethro Tull

Can't decide so I'll copy her and say James Brown at an outdoor festival in Michigan and later at a small club in San Francisco. RIP all the wonderful musicians.

@Himmmm I would have loved to see Live8 for the Pink Floyd reunion, I saw the Wall at MSG the original.I watched Live8 on MTV and they fucked it up with ads and cut away from the end when they left the stage--i was really hoping for a reconciliation. I watch this on YouTube often, it's still great!

OMG I'm a freaking groupie when it comes to concerts and rockstars, I've seen it ALL - Judas Priest, Black Sabbath, Alice Cooper, Slipknot, Marilyn Manson, Motorhead...and it's all been good...Rock/metal mostly. IMHO Rammstein gives the best damn shows, I'm addicted to them and I follow them on tour, every time when they're touring. It's like metal opera, if You've never seen it, You have too! I can't never get enough of them ❤

Boyzone, the '90s boyband (for its sentimental value). My parents wouldn't let me see them when I was 15, but eventually let me see my favourite member (Stephen Gately) when he went solo. I'm glad they let me, because when I was in Borneo (for work as an interpreter/translator/radio assistant) my mother called me to inform me that he passed away (I was devestated I mean I named a kitten after him, FFS). He wasn't part of the reunion tour, but they did a tribute for him. IDK. When I finally saw all 5, I felt like my life was complete. 🍂🖤👩🏻🥀

I don't know if these were the best concerts, but very special though, and I'm grateful I got to experience that

-Twisted Sister's last concert ever, Hellfest 2016
-Black Sabbath's last concert in France, during their Farewell tour in 2016
-Motorhead's last concert in France before Lemmy died, Hellfest 2015

I've seen some of the greats - Springsteen, Journey, Madonna, Rolling Stones, even Pavrotti, but the best, hands down, was KD Lang. This was back when she was at her peak in the 80's or 90's. She held the audience in her palm for the whole show. It was amazing.
