Jim Nabors Has Died

Jim Nabors, the star who played the clumsy deputy sheriff Gomer Pyle on “The Andy Griffith Show” and eventually starred in his own spinoff, has died. He was 87.

Nabors' husband, Stan Cadwallader, told the Associated Press his longtime partner had died at home in Hawaii.

He lived a very quiet last 30 years so I guess he was content for the last part of his life.

I recently saw a movie on TCM called 'No Time for Sergeants' from 1958 where Andy Griffith plays they Gomer Pyle character in the Air Force, it was literally the same character.

What other movies are out there where cast members are in essentially switched roles?

I so remember the blind years ago about his 'marriage' to Rock Hudson! This was when Rock was alive & well. I think it appeared in National Enquirer. No internet back then. They even had a mock-up of the wedding invitation! A co-worker brought it into work and great hilarity ensued in the break room that morning, believe me!

Love the 70's B&W publicity photo with huge shoulder to shoulder collar flaps. RIP

RIP...dying in Hawai'i isn't a half bad way to go out tho...

My Grandparents loved him, they loved his songs. I think my Grandmother would of passed out if she knew he had been gay. RIP Jim.

@Boo,I remember this well and I just thought of it yesterday, thinking how well He handled being outed, with his mostly conservative audience. I didn't laugh, I feared his show would end. These so called open minded actors today jump through hoops to stay closeted, or when they are straight, hide their perversions.

Mixed him up with Barney Fife. Gomer Pyle was his own show though the character started out as a gas station attendant on Andy Griffith. Both shows played in reruns on the UHF channel when I was a kid. RIP.

Awwwww. My mom will be sad. She LOVED Jim Nabors. She said only two people on screen could really make her laugh: Jim Nabors and Redd Foxx.

@timebob,My parents knew, didn't care. My Dad told me he heard about Rock Hudson in the army. I'm going to go look for Mom's Christmas CD now. No one would call them socially liberal.

A staple of days home from school during early elementary school. Between Gomer Pyle, McHale's Navy and Hogan's Heroes, i thought WW2 was a riot.

Jim Nabors and Rock Hudson got married in the early 70's. FYI.

When I was a little kid my mother insisted Jim Neighbors and Rock Hudson were married. She was ahead of her time with gossip. She also insisted Sean Connery was bald and wearing a toupee.

Yo, @timebob, I guarantee your grandma knew. Mine did, so did my mom and uncle and everyone else I knew. Jim Nabors was obvious, but nobody in my family cared. My grandma was from Kentucky and born in 1902 and she still adored him.

I still can’t comment on the mobile site grrr. I have to go through 10 rounds of verification. Anyone else having this issue?

@Dena- apparently Val hit a woman when rehearsing a scene in a hotel room? Maybe this will open the floodgates?

RIP. Happy memories of my Grandmother playing her Jim Nabors albums while she cooked dinner.

@TimC,no they weren't, but it was a very big gossip story in the early seventies. It did effectively out them. They were friends, but not each others type. Rock liked young, macho types, and was very promiscuous. Jim seemed to be much more stable, I don't remember any scandals. Hopefully Enty won't find any. Lol.

Aw, RIP. Good memories of watching TAGS from when I was growing up.

I'm from Indianapolis. Jim was beloved here for not only being a super nice guy, but because he sang "Back Home Again in Indiana" every year at the Indianapolis 500. If you've never heard him sing it (or have simply never heard him sing), find a video on YouTube. It's worth it. Lots of Hoosiers sniffling a little today.

Indiana: Where, without a hint of irony, people will tell you that they support Mike Pence and loved Jim Nabors (because goddamn it, tradition).

FRIDAY DEC 1
If you go to National Enquirer site, they have a story on the wedding of Rock & Jim. Got to get the magazine when it comes out.

Bubbles said...

yeah, those stories about Jim and Rock were totally made up simply as a ploy to out two closeted gay stars. Rock was so into the Tab Hunter, muscular pin-up type. Not to mention that if they were "married" there probably would have been more 'good friend' photos of them.

Unknown said...

They NEVER married. I knew Jim Nabors.
